Just a quick, and most importantly, light-hearted, comment on food:

I will accept criticism of our food from the french. From the Italians, even from the Spanish.

I will not however, accept it from the Americans. The country that bought you such delights as Chicken-in-a-can and spray-on-cheese forfeits any right to comment on culinary matters!

LOL!!!!!!!!

You are right. I'm ashamed to say that although I did try the local foods during my stay in England, I mostly visited Pizza Hut and restaraunts with salad bars.

But you are right. American food ain't much better.....

unless you come to the South. We'll fix you up good.....(and raise your cholesterol twenty points per sitting).

Bud Light? Coors Light? Can they actually be classed as beer?

I think they are classed as 'health drinks' over here

Put me in the stupid American category.

My opinion; the beer is good, hotel rooms are closets, the food is awful, it's a Muslim country run by Sharia law, the British still stubbornly occupy Ireland for no good reason, everyone drives on the wrong side, the electrical engineers failed school (Lucas electronics), none of the cars made there are reliable, and they lost two wars against the US (War of Independence and War of 1812), it's a police surveillance state, the US saved the UK in WW-II, there seem not to be orthodontists or gyms in the UK, the socialist labour party runs the government, the country is broke and going for it's second economic meltdown, the country has a history of empire-building and occupation, and the beer is good.

Indeed, consider yourself firmly well put into that category, never to be released!

There is so much wrong with your statement, I do not even know where to begin.

I will, however, point out that the Uk didn't lose the War of 1812, but I often find out this it what Americans are taught in school. The War of 1812 was started by America who coveted Canada.

After some initial setbacks, the US was pushed back and Washington was taken where we burnt down the White House. The President had to leave so quickly in a blind panic, when British troops turned up, his dinner was still set on the table! After much tooing and frowing, the Americans asked for peace.

This ended the War of 1812, with the UK not losing any territory and the US failing it it's war aims of taking lower Canada.

How did the UK lose?

yes I have noticed that aboot US citizens. I just returned from a vacation in mexico and I happened to sit next to an american at the swim up bar. He was a very friendly fellow and we had a great conversation on the resort we were staying at. After a while he confessed to not knowing much aboot Canada. and asked me about our history. He knew nothing about Canada. I dont think he knew were to find us on a map. So I took the time to explain to him how we discovered america and gave it to the americans after. How we developed all science and invented food. I cant believe no one in america knows this stuff. just kidding nice guy just uniformed. Ill give it to him he was patient and wanted to know more. So I did tell him Canada was the only country in the world to walk on US soil and burn down the whitehouse. Just as a prank mind you we didnt want to hurt anyone and were sorry.

LOL, That's ok the "Homeowners insurance" covered the loss, and replaced the "abode" (the old one needed renovating anyway...)

I love the British. HELLO, where'd most of the ancestors in the US come from?? We're not only allies, we're family.

PS. Plus, we have similar opinions on politics believe it or not. I think.

My view is that the Faulkland Islands should be left alone by the British.

Why can't the British just give the Faulkland Islands over to the people of the Faulkland Islands just as they surrendered Hong Kong to China?

The reason why is that China would have destroyed England and the Faulkland Islands are not powerful enough to protect themselves.

Oil deposits were discovered in the area of the Faulkland Islands and greed took over. That oil revenue would have been a nice thing for the people of the Faulkland Islands, but instead all of the revenue and industry from it will never be seen by them. They will be kept in bondage by the British and not given the chance to live their own lives as they see fit; somewhat similar to the lives of the people in Haiti.

Americans love the British, but why must a powerful giant always take from the meek? Lots of Americans side with the underdog, or what they see as being the way things should be, but aren't.

I'm pretty sure that's why most of us are on ATS because we see things as they are, and we know that things aren't right and want to make our world better for everybody, not for just some people.

Shows what you know.

The People of the Falklands overwhelming voted to remain within the UK in 1985 when they voted on their new constitution. They are British and view themselves as such. End of Story. Take it to the other threads about this particular story and learn some truth.

You obviously know nothing about a subject you're willing to voice an opinion about. Something I find very annoying.

EDIT: Oh, by the way. they get a share of the revenues as all drilling licenses are issued by the Islands Government, not the UK Government. Go and educate yourself before you look daft... Woops, too late...

EDIT 2: Oh, Hong Kong got given back because we had it on a 99 year lease from China. It had nothing to do with "being crushed", the lease was up. End of.

Christ, some people do spout some nonsense, don't they?

Excellent obsevation, And I must add, Although there is not much of a "conspiracy" being discussed in this thread, It is one of the most enjoyable threads that I have read in awhile..

For the most part, the civility shown in this thread is exemplary.. Thank you... This is how I like to "imagine" threads to be conducted on ATS..

(Just a members feelings)

(edit to add)"Americans side with the underdog, or what they see as being the way things should be, but aren't.

The above quote by Russian Scientist is what I was refering too, Sorry too many distractions at home, forgot to "quote" it at first.. please forgive..

I hate the saying that british food is awful.

The uk is a multicultral society, and thus we have foods from all over the world. Almost anything you can imagine can be found. So if you cant find good food, well that's your fault lol.

I like british food.
I love steak and ale pies, and the cakes here are to die for IMO. I like the ones with jam and fresh cream in the middle.

Yeah are you for real, or is this a joke?

By the way there are gyms around every corner. If you can't find a gym in London for example, then something is really wrong.

Me too. I'm sure it has been pretty poor in the past but many in the UK are foodies. We have a wide range of Gastro-Pubs and restaurants where I live, some Michelin starred, that serve world class food better that I have eaten in other countries.

Even some of our celebrity chefs are popular world wide now.

Now if someone wants to comment on how poor our customer service is in the UK then I will agree with them!

Yup. Stupid American, apparently, and by your own admission.

The beer (ale) is great.

Hotels are fine, if you have the money.

It's not a Muslim country, and Sharia law is available in some places if both the defendant and the plaintiff agree on its use (it's called tolerance)

The Republic of Ireland declared itself independent in 1916. Northern Ireland is free to re-join the Republic if a majority votes to do so ('democracy' - I'm sure you've heard of it)

Drives on the wrong side of the road? As most people are right-handed, keeping one's dominant right hand on the steering wheel while changing gears makes a lot of sense.

The electrical engineers? Like the ones that built the electronics on the Concorde? Or the ones that built the first programmable computer?

Edit: the cars? Like Rolls Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin? I guess they'll never be as reliable as the fantastic Ford Pinto.

The Brits lost one war against the US - the war of 1812 was a US loss. The war of Independence was fought between the US, who were basically English farmers, and the British forces, who were mainly German mercenaries. Also Britain was fighting more people than just the US at the time.

The US didn't save the UK during World War II. Without the Brits holding out the US would have had to have launched an invasion of mainland Europe from Florida, with a fifth of the ships, and no military intelligence.

It's not a police surveillance state - the overwhelming majority of CCTV cameras are owned by private people, not the government, and anyone is free to request all footage recorded of them. The Data Protection Act also requires footage of people to be destroyed as soon as its use is negated.

The Brits have the fewest cavities in the entire western world (the US included), and are not as fat on average as people from the US.

Socialism is used in the countries with the highest standards of living in the world. Only people who equate it with "communism", for some strange reason (usually people who were scared of the Russians in the cold war), seem to be scared of it.

The country has far less debt per person than the US, and is currently out of its recession. The financial capital of the world, London, is the capital city.

The British Empire was full of conquest, occupation, and killing, yes. But then so is American history, so I don't think you can gripe about that.

And yes, the beer (ale) is great.

But nice try.
