Wow - talk about grasping at straws. Whoa!

Ok, very simple:

I have an app on my iPhone with 'emoticons'. However, these emoticons available in the iTunes store DO NOT work on any other phone EXCEPT the iPhone.

If I send this
or this
- all the other person gets is... now get this... RANDOM SYMBOLS exactly like that OR just a box! Ack!

Come on Y'all - besides we still have seen no proof this even occurred. But! IF we could see - we would see - all that happened was someone with emoticons tried to send them to you/your mama.

You don't have an iPhone with that app - so the emoticons DO NOT work and all you get - random symbols - much like you are describing.

That would be more like whats going down - no conspiracy in this - just lack of technical knowledge, with all due respect to the OP.

They mean you no harm.

You can call your cell provider and get the number TO EVERY NUMBER that calls IN AND OUT of your phone. Even with a service such a 'MetroPCS'. You even know the time in which it happened so you can tell them: I need all the numbers that called/texted between the hours of 7-9 pm last night. And they will produce that information for you.

Word to the wise: They can ALSO FORWARD ANY OF THE ENTIRE MESSAGES from the wives cell to the husbands! Or Mom can read every single text that comes IN or GOES out!

Few know this when ALL SHOULD. This is the crap WE NEED to know but don't. We are so busy making sure no outsiders are watching. We forget we are always sleeping with the enemy... if ANYONE is watching you - it's them - not others. And 'them' you better fear! Anyone ever gone through a divorce can back me on this.

EDITED TO ADD:

If this explanation isn't suffice for you - here are a million other reasons this could occur.

unix.freshmeat.net...

And LASTLY: Its ASIAN DAMMIT - NOT Chinese. This place dumbs-down more and more literally, DAILY. It's now to the point I don't even admit I come here. The state of ATS at the moment is embarrassing.

Just a thought but that could be a viral text message designed to open up the phone to hackers - I know this was common with the old Nokia phones in the past so could be similar... or a glitch

Primary don't freak out its not from the futur lol... two possible explanation and what it MOST likely is the second....

Font translation errors sending jap/chinese characters to a phone that don't support them. During holidays lots of texts/calls are sent and made it clogs telephone networks pretty bad alot of times when the system gets overloaded it load-balance to backbone servers with often are images of main servers but lots of times NOCC techs may forget to adjust certain details such as time/date since they are not that often being used if not only during maintenance as backup or emergencies...

Second is SMS exploits its simple certain phones like the Iphone and now a couple others have "exploits" which as flaws in their programming that allows attacker to pass codes and execute codes inside the program that will allow them either direct or in-direct access via privilege escalation to your phone and take over it... did the message end with a strange box? or the character you couldn't show here was a strange box? Its a clever tactic in use to hide the box in a serie of weird characters so alot of people won't even bother about it thinking its just a joke or a fluke by their telco...

Thanks! That is said far better than I could put it - but then, I'm no pro, right? I'm just a jack-leg photographer for National Geographic and the like.

But ewww - LOVE technology! If it's out - I got it... down to the flo TV - I'm an addict to staying connected and in the 'know'. Having proper technology in these days and times could literally be the difference between life or death. Which - if either devices - will help me in those times?I don't know. Nor do any of you. But if ANYTHING works... I have it.

I'm a wagon driver (in the UK) and last night two strange things happened.

I'd stopped at a service station to buy a coffee and when I returned to my wagon and turned the ignition key, my near-side mirror (which is motorised) moved of it's own accord. I kept pressing the button to return it to its' previous position but it kept moving and the motor (what turns the thing), kept on buzzing.

When I have a problem with my vehicle I always phone the base straight away in case I forget to mention it when I actually get back to base. My phone was "locked" !!! I never lock my phone yet last night it was locked and when I persevered (kept pressing the "unlock") it went to the radio option.

This was around 0400hrs GMT. A few hours later I tried to use my phone again and it was back to normal. So was the mirror!

I wondered if it was because of some cosmic radiation or something. Whatever it was it was wiered and it made me think of your post! :-)

Dear msmiaaaaa,
I can say for sure you are not crazy.
I have received several text messages from aR during 2010.
I have no idea what they mean, I was scared to have them in my phone, because they were from 2093, ( weird) that I deleted them all, having shown them to my friends and family first.
The dates were not always the same, but the year was - 2093.
Some of the texts were long, others very short, like five words, if you can call them that... Because they were spaced like words but they consisted only of symbols.
I believe the last one I got was in October.
Maybe there are more people that got them too...
I live in Portugal, Europe.

One of the texts

"yo[ 2Ça9 åò0ù ¿å y M ~ >@D< ¿U"

I can't explain the date, but I can take a stab at the symbols. Sometimes my wife or a friend will send a message in Japanese or Chinese to my English only phone by mistake. The messages always comes in a mess of symbols that look like that. So maybe your mom got a message in another language and her phone can't display it.

Maybe it's cause you're all in America! (I'm in New Zealand, mine gets Chinese as Chinese just fine!) Some upset Chinese person kept texting me last year, and I couldn't tell what they wanted, nor could I tell them they had the wrong number! I ended up being quite sorry for them, as I deleted their texts.
Then one day, all my texts were dated 1972. Software glitch at my mobile provider. They fixed it!

Well you won't get much of a response on a necro-post like this, but lucky for you I checked it out of curiosity. This is just a glitch/hack, things like this have been happening to people for many years now. Either someones phone got hacked or else it is with your provider. It really is nothing to worry about, I personally think it comes more from people hacking and just keeping up with something they saw. Back when these post were made in like 2009 a bunch of people got texts from December 2012.

People are STILL trying to figure this out after 3 years?
Do you not realize there are websites that allow you to make phone calls and send texts completely anonymously, where YOU decide what fake number it comes from, etc?????

My God ATS, the hell is wrong with this site anymore...

Could you explain why people in different parts of the world are getting messages from this SAME "person" aR, and with the SAME date, 2093?

The messages are not signed with different names, and the dates are not different. It's always "aR" and always 2093.
