The water may cut the rock but only because it followed the path of least resistance and continued to flow. Once it loosened up little pieces of the rock, it set the rock against itself to gouge the canyon even faster. Overall, the water itself did very little but it did what was natural all the time -- to move around obstructions.

Had the water fought the rock, a shoreline would stand testament. The water would pool and stand stagnant. The rock would contain it. The flow would cease. The rock would have greater stamina against the water.

If human kind is to endure then we must completely master this environment not continue to be bound by it. It is not by the principles of humanity than we survive and pull ourselves out of the forest, but strictly by means of the most brutal struggle. In reality the only way to maintain the status quo is by population management, and this is without question a path that will lead to the ultimate extinction of our species. All environmental troubles should be met with the technology to address said problems.

E.G. Too much C02? Fertilize the oceans to increase plankton levels. Kill off the predators that feed on the plankton eating creatures. Harvest both the overabundance of plankton and the increased bio mass for conversion to oil.

Consider that 98% of all species that have ever existed are now extinct, and ask yourself why. Without going into great detail, humankinds only hope is to reach for the stars, and the only clear path is a population so large that other resources besides those found on Earth must be harvested. Imagine a planet wide city, and a completely managed biosphere. The save the whales attitude is the greatest step back mankind has ever seen.

Struggle is the father of all things, and simply bowing out to try and maintain this, a very doomed environment makes no sense at all! Especially when we have the technology to manage this event in hand!

This isn’t a game of hacky sack, we are in it for the species!

P.S. Have you ever seen the Vostok Ice core data? Earth is a cold planet that is only warm a small percentage of the time. Consider that a little warming may be very good for humankind Other species be damned!

The wisdom I find in your words does not lay with giving in to circumstances but rather to set opposition against itself. While water may or may not do this unconsciously, we as humans can do so quite consciously. To set opposition against itself is not at all to do very little but rather to do most effectively what needs to be done.

That being said, it is important to keep our eye on the prize and in regards to this thread that prize should be the responsible conservation of the planet we reside in. The original poster lamented the carcinogens and pollutants we rely upon to further our goals and it is indeed lamentable. However, there have been many people who have worked in a method closer to what you seem to be suggesting by relying upon more natural ways to oppose those forces that obstruct our goals.

An example of that would be in agricultural where the battle against aphids has long been the bane of farmers. In the modern world many farmers turned to poisons and carcinogens to battle these aphids but there were those farmers who dropped this dubious method and instead began releasing a jar full of lady bugs in their fields to battle the aphids. In this regard, human farmers took the path of least resistance and instead of harming their own crops with poisons in order to keep aphids from harming their crops they worked with nature and used the power of lady bugs to battle the aphids. It was not an act of doing nothing nor giving into the circumstances that brought about this natural and clever way of fighting insects, it was an act of doing something more responsibly and with regard for the environment they so clearly depended upon.

Hmmm...yes. Still, this sort of opposition has a tendency to set against itself without an indentifiable external target.

I most certainly like the way you think and would indeed like to know how we go about setting loose a jar of ladybugs in this effort to conserve our planet. There is much I still have to learn and it has been a pleasure learning from you. I am much more interested in fluidity than rigidity and even though at times I may be rigid in my earnestness, it is good to be reminded of the power of fluidity.

....The United States was the first country in the world to implement a ban on all illegal wood imports in early 2008... Also the green biomass of western nations HAS INCREASED, as well as the ocean green biomasses have increased....

Yet environmentalists want to give a green light and to allow the countries that still allow illegal deforestations like China, India, Russia, South America, etc, not only to keep on "industrializing", but they are being given a green ligh to increase ALL emission as much as those countries want....
