Do you think a Kindergartener or 1st grade student has those critical thinking skills to know the difference between Free Republic Democracy and Marxism, the latter being a self admitted philosophy of the POTUS?

Nope. I also do not think anyone is going to be able to pass along any such complex idea or to indoctrinate children of this age group either.

Politics is like religion, Republican and Democrat are two denominations of the same religion who, rather than unifying to fight for this country, seek only to divide us and prove the other is wrong. People don't even know why they believe what they believe, they just pick a party and a platform and repeat the tired old nonsense that their 'superiors' within the party tell them, much like a blindly believing religious person.

Trapped in this tiny partisan box (which turns out to just be an illusion to divide us) the ignorant believer lashes out at any one who doesn't agree with his shallow political ideology or the broad vague platform upon which it is built.

Yes this is indoctrination and its been pretty obvious from the beginning that Obama was going to make attempts to get Americans active in their own governance once more, many are wary of this as it is not the common route for a politician to take. Personally I don't think we should have Federally run schools, so long as the federal government is running education they have power over the minds of the next generation, a dangerous prospect indeed.

In fact the Federal government has so much power that our country has become a Farce, though we pretend to have a Democratic Republic in actuality we are controlled from all sides by various interest groups and agencies...

So please stop spreading the dangerous illusion of politics, it only hurts the country further.

I guess I am one of the lucky ones in our school district they will not be asking the children the follow up questions. My oldest son (7) asked the teacher if he had to watch the obama video and she replied yes. HMmmmmm gets ya thinkin huh

GOD BLESS AMERICA

I'm sorry, but you're a horrible parent. It's completely disgusting and degrading to influence your children to dislike someone just because YOU dislike them. How about you let your children have their own set of beliefs? What if they liked Obama? Would you get mad and tell them he's evil? Probably.

Disgusting. Pathetic. Sad.

God Bless America? How could God bless it when there are people like you negatively influencing their children?

Perhaps you need to read what I have posted, not just the story, but what I had to say about it.

I say this because I agree with what you have said above. That is why I gave your post a star.

Part of me is hearing.

OMG don't you DARE try and teach my kid to learn to think objectively. Don't you DARE try and teach my kid that staying in school is a good thing. I want them to drop out and live off "govment" welfare and complain about the middle class wanting health care just like us who don't go to school. School is just an evil socialistic program, and I hate socialism, (even though I have medicaid/mediare but don't tell anyone) and I ain't sending my kid to that evil socialist school.....except on days when they are not being asked to stay in school, or on days when I have to go do something, I need that free daycare. Oh, and don't you even think about asking me to actually possibly go to the school on the day that the speech is being shown and participate and myself actually learn anything.

Some people are just strange.

If you don't get it, that was a paragraph of sarcasm.

DITTO!! and furthermore...
The opposition should have a say, but presidents speeches have always been watched in schools. whats different now? Is the pres. telling our kids to rebel, and join the "dark side" NO! he is going to encourage them to achieve their goals, and work hard for a productive society...wtf oh no!! not that, maybe that will make lazy parents, have to explain to their kids, why they never get off the couche long enough to do something good for their community. please dont let him do that!

If their is an issue about the pres. addressing OUR children, discuss it at dinner with the family, and explain just WHY YOU ARE OPPOSED TO ENCOURAGING YOUR CHILDREN TO BE THE BEST OF THEIR ABILITY! AND MAKE THE MOST OF THEIR SCHOOL YEARS SO THEY WONT HAVE TO LOOK BACK AT THEIR LIFE AND WISH "SOMEONE" WOULD HAVE ENCOURAGED THEM TO ACHIEVE THEIR GOALS!!!

My apologies then

Again my habit of replying before I reach the end of a post...

Plus I have an itchy trigger finger when it comes to the partisanship that has taken root here on ATS of late so when I saw you say conservatives were nutty I immediately mistook you as one of those lost in the illusion

Once that puberty kicks in, all this pep talk will fly out the window. Once they are driving around, and hanging out with freedom...this will be forgotten in 90% of the children.

Obama's ratings are dropping like a bad transmission. He just failed to reform healthcare for the greatest nation on the planet and now he wants to have a one on one with your children.

They try to use the argument that other nations have a higher grade point average and they go to school year round.

With the ever rising pricetag on everything....most people arent as "lucky" as Obama, or Van Jones to get into an ivy league school.

We are in a rather critical point in time, and I think this could easily be passed on to the teachers to accomplish and have Obama do somthing more productive.

The outline put out by the White House is no different than what teachers would ask in the classroom with out the outline. Of course you would recap by asking "What is President Obama asking you to do?" It's a no brainer.'

In my 62 years on this earth I have never witnessed such demonization of a President as with President Obama. The children not permitted to view this speech with no longer respect our President, or perhaps any other president. I believe this boycott is the result of ignorance. Ronald Regan, George HW Bush and George Bush (on 911) all talked to public school children. I didn't hear any controversy at any of those times. I cannot help but believe the bottom line here is racism.

highschool is a little late...there is usually alot of distractions, and or "funner" things to do then talk with mom and dad about what the pres. said to us today at school-if you even went... they will either brush it under the rug, not pay attention, or lie. like I said im my post- start em learning young. if there is something YOU disagree with talk with them about it at home, and explain your pov. k-3 is a little young, but 4,5,6 should be a perfect age. imo.

Ok,

Hmm. I won't hide the fact that I was pleased to receive an email from my daughters school indicating that they would not be airing the Presidents address to the children, nor would they be following any of the "lesson plans" outlined, or deviating from their usual curriculum at all. I also won't hide that this was more of a knee-jerk reaction than anything. I don't support him, and most of his speeches and addresses are filled with lies and empty promises, I just didn't want more of the same dished out to my kids.

I simply don't like the fact that this man has hidden so much of his past, from the people he's trying to lead. Secrets are often kept to conceal ulterior agendas.

I don't really care however, and in fact I think it's a good thing for any POTUS to address the children of the nation.

After considering my initial response to the email I referenced above, I've changed positions entirely. I'll even record the address, and play it for my children after school. It is their right to hear what their president has to say, and if it's par for the course, and full of lies and empty promises, well better they hear it from the horses mouth.

Oh, and I'm not a republican. And on that topic, I'd also like to say that the people the far left are calling "Republicans" are not true republicans. These people wouldn't know a real republican if one bit them on the arse.

My school corporation will be allowing teachers to show the speech. It is up to each individual teacher. A neighboring school corporation sent home letters telling parents if they object to write a letter excusing their child from that class.

Video: Outrage over Obama school speech was missing during Bush and Reagan school addresses

Not true, they were just playing clips of democrats/media outraged about Bush speaking at schools.

Presidents Reagan and George H. W. Bush did in fact speak to school children in national addresses, and conservatives at the time did not react the same way they are reacting to the Obama school address.

No, but the liberals did. The liberals/media are great at pointing out other's hypocrisy, while ignoring theirs.

I've heard of no such pledges. I'll reconnect with my teacher friends and check to see if they have. What are these "pledges" of which you speak?

Dont you watch the news? They had to take out portions of the speech and text that asked for kids to "dedicate themselves to the president".

Which is why I find it hilarious that you guys say there is nothing to get upset about. Had we not gotten upset, tat part would still be in the text/speech.

www.examiner.com...

Yesterday it was reported that Obama has removed a portion of his speech that suggested that students should write a letter to themselves and ask "what can I do to help President Obama"! Obama has taken lots of heat over this. School districts in at least seven states have decided not to allow the intrusion by the President on the children's class time.

1 - They aren't 'being given the opportunity' .. they are being forced to hear him.
2 - It isn't just a speech about education. There are Obama books being passed out before the speech. They are being 'taught' Obama's version of Obama.

It's big brother.

Sadly, if you wait to teach your child that education is important when they reach high school, they probably will have dropped out by then.

It's like waiting till your teen is pregnant before teaching them about birth control. Or waiting till your teen gets a STD before teaching them about safe sex.

Or waiting for them to have a car accident before teaching them how to drive safely.

Wait too long, and the time for teaching, will be long gone.

My children started school very young, they both are highly intelligent, and wanted to start school by the age of two, which of course we had to put off for a little longer. Why were they so into learning? Because, from birth I taught them the importance, and the FUN part of learning, and learning to think constructively.

Now, my daughter is a JR in High School, is only 15, and has the opportunity to graduate this year if she wants, as well as take university courses.

My youngest, is in honor classes already in middle school. Wait till they are in high school, and it's too late.

So, for me teaching my children the importance of education, teaching them critical thinking skills, teaching them the responsibility of community and caring for each other started from birth.

I have happy, intelligent children who know how to make good choices. Guess what, sometimes, my children and I have a completely different view on things in this world, and that's OK. I love seeing them look at all the different sides of a debate, look at all the facts, think about what they have learned, and come to a conclusion and an opinion based on their own minds, and not just mine.

It shows me I am actually doing my job as a parent.

Harm None
Peace

All 99% of grade school kids are going to remember is: "I saw the president on TV - he said to get an education"

From many of the posts I read on this thread - I'd say we need another documentary entitled: "Political Camp at Home".

The Socialism I'm seeing is Parent Mind Control - not wanting their kids to think for themselves.

Really? Any Proof? I already dismissed your earlier claims on this issue by citing the actual document sent out to schools. But your back at it, again par for the course. Any proof for your pudding?
