Hmmm, I don't know. There are straight lines and rectangles everywhere. Immediately to the right looks like another square or rectangle. Kind of looks like a ground down pyramid, but, I don't know. Probably a glitch like Sdog says, but maybe not.

Perhaps this might shed some light on the issue: googlesightseeing.com... Look familiar?

I just did a search using the terms, "Google Ocean" and "Atlantis" and I'm just amazed at how many people simply ate this up without a second thought.
They are false canyons added by Professor David Sandwell, a geophysicist with the Scripps Institute of Oceanography to track bathymetric data usage. Sorry, guys... Keep looking.

Here's a depressingly accurate explanation and observation from our friends at keyhole:

They are tracks of sonar scans that are used to help form the ocean topography imagery.

I now expect this to be the genesis of a whole bunch of tin-foil hat YouTube videos about the discovery of Atlantis with Google Earth. keyhole

Yep, it seems the mystery has been solved.

Don't worry, I didn't get my hopes up.

1) It's The Sun.

2) Even if it wasn't The Sun, at least Plato's description of Atlantis is arranged in concentric circles, not a grid-like pattern.

It's okay. "Atlantis" refers to any civilization that has perished or disappeared due to a natural disaster of some sort, or one that was forgotten and covered by water.

By the way, if you guys go over to the keyhole link, they have pictures of many more examples of this phenomenon including more detailed explanations.

yeh, wow, and i checked the scale on the bottom left

at about 150 X 120 kilometers, that is one Big City!
or 100 X 80 miles, or so....

i read somewhere a few years ago and then saw two pics,
one of a map, not the piri reis map, another one
a map found in 1500's or so
and then an image of antarctica without the ice
almost identical, peninsulas and all

i cannot find that picture of that map, anyone here know what i am talking about?

Darn it schrodinger, you beat me to it.

I was going to explain that you get these edge lines when mapping with sonar quite often.

... then you had to come along and steal my limelight.

Even those who didn't know about sonar imaging... it wouldn't have taken long for someone to zoom out and realize there's a horrible scale issue.
Compare the size of your "atlantis" to nearby land masses.
Yeah... like I said, scale.

Yeah i have to second the fact that THE SUN wrote this. They will write just about anything for you to read it, i think i saw something once saying the pope was a reptile. . .

But yes plato did say it would be in the area, and he was told by Socrates, and HE said it was fact, not legend. But it is too small to be the whole Atlantis, and how have we not stumbled upon it if it is so close to the canary islands? Just saying, i know edger cayce said it would rise, but could this really be it? And what about bimini road?

I used to say that too, until the Sun broke the story of methane on Mars (which I didn't believe because it was from them...then saw it on the news the very next day)

I still haven't seen anything which states what these things are authoritatively. We got one link from googlesightseeing which assumes that these are somehow artifacts of a map maker like the actual letters seen in other areas.

And we have a second opinion which calls them "sonar tracks" which somehow only magically appear here, and of which no one can show other examples.

Indeed, there has been no authoritative statements, just lots of suggestions of what it _might_ be.

Wow... so you get two completely different suggested explanations and you say on to the next?

No verification?

Come on folks.... where is the critical thinking here....

Nobody here has shown any proof that these things are either map markings or sonar tracks....

All I see are several different suggestions, some mundane, others not so much.
