He doesn't have to be English to be a Man U fan. 99% of them aren't.

I agree, especially the last verse...

. Lord grant that Marshal Wade May by thy mighty aid Victory bring May he sedition hush And like a torrent rush Rebellious Scots to crush God save the King

... which is possibly why that verse is almost never heard. It was composed pushing 300 years ago, and only adopted as the BRITISH national anthem 50-odd years later. Also, the whining about the last verse skips over the fact tha, earlier in the song, "Lord make the nations see, that men should brothers be, and form one family, the wide world over."

Frankly, that's tosh. As an Englishman who's fought alongside Scots, who's married to a Scot, and with a Scottish father-in-law vastly more important to me than my own father, I would like nothing more than full devolution and see the backs of Scotland and Wales, and NI. Remove the Scottish parliamentarians and bus them all back to Edinburgh. There's no reason why we can't do that, and remain close-working business partners.

I have nothing against the Sweaties - they have a beautiful country and I find them incredibly pleasant when we're up there - but if they want devolution that much, let them have it.

Their supposed 'hatred' of the English is tiresome. EVERYONE's hatred of the English is tiresome. There aren't too many nations out there who don't have a history of oppressing and suppressing their enemies at some point in history. That doesn't bother me. What bother's me are the spineless wonders running the country who are determined to apologise to all and sundry for us being English.

I'm going to quit whining myself now, and go laugh at Braveheart. Bah.

The vast majority of English dislike God Save The Queen and would much prefer something more suitable and apt.
The National Anthem should be refelctive of the nation and it's people and should not advocate subserviance to a family of Greeks and Germans!

This is a tired old argument against the Monarchy.

FYI, the Queen is a direct descendent of King Harold, the one topped off at the Battle of Hastings. All the Royal Houses in Europe are inter-related, so just because her more recent ancestors were nobles from Hamburg, that doesn't mean that they are German. Also, many of us are also descended from Anglo-Saxon stock, making us all at least a little bit German too, no?

It's also somewhat racist and stinks of the typical Daily Mail nonsense about immigrants. Judging by your above assertion, I assume you believe that Black people, or Indians that were born here are not British?

Of course not!
You have participated in enough threads that I have to know that I am in no way racist, I beleive in a strong and pround England and UK which is fluid and progressive whilst being proud of and promoting our culture and heritage.
I welcome anyone who enables us to continue to grow and develop and has something positive to offer.
I despise whingers, moaners, parasites and those that seek to destroy my country.

That does not mean to say that I pledge allegiance to The Royal Family.
Neither am I an anti-Royalist, to be honest I feel nothing about them whatsoever.
You yourself have said that they are part of an ongoing interbreeding programme designed to keep the same bloodlines in control, an arguement for another thread I think.

The National Anthem of England and the UK should be representative of us, the people and our country and not just one family of who a large percentage of Brits consider to be predominently unBritish but rather Greeko / Germanic.

I find it amazing that you, an otherwise very well reasoned individual, should construe that as racism and way below your normal high standard of reasoning!

No problem, no offense taken.

A humorous take on our National Anthem.

A bit on my country, Ireland ----

I was born and raised in Northern Ireland for 32 years before getting the hell out of there. As many of you know, Ireland has had its fair share of Terrorism with the IRA and UDA/Police/Army and Political war going on. I myself lived just on the Outskirts of Belfast City and was witness to all kinds of mindless thugery such as - Petrol Bombing, Car Hijacks, Muggings, Shootings and indeed Bombing, which i personally expierienced having just been very lucky escaping 3 of them.

Racism play's it part in the different factions that seperate the community, Prodestants vrs Catholics. Ive witnessed and have been told story's of beatings and shootings that people including friends have taken, all because of there Religion.

Respect all i say,

Regards

I have always wanted to visit where my family came from in Ireland (I am an American), but I have some hesitation in traveling to Northern Ireland. Some close friends of mine went to Northern Ireland some years back, and even though they are extremely experienced World Tarvelers (Think Africa of all Places), they spent very little time in the area. They came across a Military Checkpoint, heard Automatic Gunfire, and left. That was about it.

From what I can tell, my family is from the Derry/County Antrim area. They of course left quite a while ago, even though there are plenty of folks with the name still living in the area (Not as though I even know any of them however). The area has such an amazing, yet violatile history, in many ways it seems interesting, but also a shame.

One thing I did learn however, from many living there, is that the conflict all too often attains Mainstream Publicity as a Religious Issue, when in all reality, it is nothing more than Politics. It is less about Protestant vs. Catholic, as it is about Republican vs. Loyalist. It just so happens that most Loyalists happen to be Brits, and most Brits happen to be Protestants. As a matter of fact, some of the very first IRA members were Protestants (aka Pepsis lol).

How would you say that City of Derry is now-a-days in terms of strife? How about the area of County Antrim bordering County Derry?

Thanks for your post. I am so sorry for the violence you suffered because I knew it too well and it is endemic in the culture.

There are two versions of history. The official version and the truth.
I grew up in the Highlands among the descendents of the original peoples of the land (from before the Scots invaded and gave their name to the country). There was enormous hostility towards the English but equally towards the lowland Scots who were thought of in the same derogatory way as "the sassenach". Even in the dulling effect of the whiskey, they knew their land had been taken from them by these invaders whose name now claims the country. Children still spoke their native tongue at home and were beaten or punished for lapsing into it at school. My mother was from Dundee and even after 17 years was still called a "white settler". I hated the violence in the society particularly towards women and I left when I was able to. My sister stayed because of her schoolfriends and they are all best of friends to this day. Most have abusive relationships and seem to have adapted to the life. I asked her why she and her friends put up with it and she said it was the best she could find and she was lucky to have what she has. That made me feel very sad as I found far greater tolerance and freedom after leaving but there was no way to convince her.

Against that, I am guessing the girls who were assaulted failed through no fault of their own to show the "respect" expected of the culture in the same way you would not get on the last train to Gourock wearing a Rangers scarf if you wanted to arrive with your teeth intact and no blood leaking down your shirt. Think I am exaggerating? Nope.
