This DVD is being used as a scare tactic by the McCain campaign and is having the unintended consequences of violence against Arab Americans.
My opinion as an individual and thoroughly appalled human being:
John McCain has a moral obligation to publicly censure the Clarion Fund, the organization that produced Obsession and is distributing the DVDs; to denounce the inflammatory, anti-Muslim message of Obsession; and to do everything in his power to stop any further campaign activities by his supporters that have the potential to incite violence.

On Friday, September 26, the end of a week in which thousands of copies of Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West -- the fear-mongering, anti-Muslim documentary being distributed by the millions in swing states via DVDs inserted in major newspapers and through the U.S. mail -- were distributed by mail in Ohio, a "chemical irritant" was sprayed through a window of the Islamic Society of Greater Dayton, where 300 people were gathered for a Ramadan prayer service.

In June, 2007, Brigitte Gabriel, author of Because They
Hate, delivered a lecture at the Joint Forces Staff College
(JFSC). During this lecture, which was part of the JFSC's
Islam elective, Gabriel said, among other things, that
American Muslims should not be allowed to hold public office
because the Koran tells them to lie, making their oaths of
office meaningless, and that American Muslims "are good at
nothing but complaining about every single thing." She also
instructed the students to call the F.B.I. if they saw a
mosque being built in their community, and included
derogatory comments such as referring to Dearborn, Michigan
as "Dearbornism" because of the city's large Muslim
community. One of the students subjected to these insulting
comments was a Muslim American who had been serving in the
U.S. Army for sixteen years.
Both Brigette Gabriel and Walid Shoebat appeared in the
2005 anti-Muslim documentary Obsession: Radical Islam's War
Against the West. This documentary, currently being
redistributed via DVDs inserted in major newspapers to
millions of voters in "swing" states, has been used by the
Department of the Navy, and has also been shown at U.S. Army
training events. The documentary has been endorsed by
Jeffrey H. Norwitz, Professor, U.S. Naval War College.

Omid Safi, a professor of Islamic studies at UNC-CH, has researched the video and the Clarion Fund. He says the producer of the video is a Canadian native who now is a rabbi and Zionist leader in Israel. Distribution was aided by a Christian Zionist organization headed by Texas evangelist John Hagee, he said, and a Clarion Fund Web site recently published, then removed, an article that endorsed John McCain over Barack Obama for president.
Safi noted that the DVD was placed in newspapers only in key election swing states, suggesting it's intended to scare voters into the McCain camp. "The whole premise of this film is that the West doesn't know what radical Islam represents," Safi said. "Fair enough. Tell us what you represent." My calls to the Clarion Fund were not returned.
I think newspapers have an obligation to be as transparent as possible with readers about the information they provide. In this case, I think the DVD fell short in two respects.
First, it should have been labeled as paid advertising content, as the newspaper would require of a political advertisement. Despite the story on the front page, it's clear from their comments that some readers perceived the video as somehow endorsed by The N&O. McClure said it's the first time he could recall that The N&O has distributed a DVD.
More important is the lack of information about the source of this controversial content. Without that, the readers were not in a position to make an informed judgment about the message they received.
Pro-McCain Group Dumping 28 Million Terror Scare DVDs in Swing States
70 newspapers in swing states have been paid to distribute Obsession this weekend and next, which means not all the DVDs have been delivered yet. Check the list at the end of this post to see if your newspaper is one of them, and let them know how you feel about their participation in this shameless propaganda campaign.)
This week, 28 million copies of a right-wing, terror propaganda DVD are being mailed and bundled in newspaper deliveries to voters in swing states. The 60-minute DVDs, titled Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West, are landing on doorsteps in a campaign coinciding with the 7th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
