Windsocks are typically employed in railyards and other rail facilities in the event of a spill of some sort; diesel fuel or other more toxic liquids. These socks will indicate the prevailing wind direction and aid haz-mat crews in determining if it is necessary to evacute local citizens and also assist in the deployment of the materials used to mitigate the spill.
