It doesn't. It's an incurable disease for the most part. The perfect storm of addiction, desperation, rage and ignorance. The only thing we can really focus on is prevention, and saving those who are most at risk today. Unfortunately the trend is going in the opposite direction. A government who will turn away a single mother who only needed a little help, a police force who alienate our youth by beating them up for skateboarding or wearing baggy pants, and a society who is complacent until crime reaches their doorstep. And then they wonder "why did this happen to me?"

I mean can that excuse be used 2 generations from now? Their grandparents were traumatized by poverty and those social/psychological effects were passed on and that reason the grandchildren are violent and dishonest?

There's a big difference between making excuses and looking at reasons, but yes, it is indeed a multi-generational problem, particulalry for the black community going all the way back to the Civil War. The blacks were freed, but never successfully assimilated into the economy. Instead of hiring on the former slaves at a fair living wage, the blacks were left nothing but the freedom to starve and scrape by within their own meager sub-economy. What we know of today as an underground economy or black market. In fact, the southern economy as a whole has only really seen substantial recovery in the past few decades. Enough to be competitive with the industrial north anyway.

If one is not paid enough to subsist, they will resort to other methods, and be embittered by it.

Actually I do think that would make for a great theory in the future, however many people grow up poor but they STILL have a sense of right and wrong. A heck of a lot of people are the offspring of those that survived the great depression, for some reason that era did NOT turn that generation into thugs.

There's a big difference between growing up poor and being starved of opportunity. Had the Great Depression gone on for decades, we certainly would have seen a violent and even revolutionary generation spawned.

I think that most people know the difference between right and wrong, but there comes a time when a person gives up and just doesn't care anymore. And then, looking at the multi-gernational affects, we are seeing today the proliferation of a breed that is born not to care. They don't even value their own lives, why should they care about yours? What chance does a person have who is born to parents who became junkies when the last factory in town closed? Now the drugs have turned these parents into monsters that will put out cigarettes on their own babies and such. The child grows up abused and neglected in ways that most people can't even imagine. Then on top of that, the child knows that the best they can hope for is to live to 25 selling crack on a street corner. The schools don't educate them, and there aren't any jobs for them even if they did. Ugh, sorry for the rant, but people have to see the cycle and break it.

At some point it comes down to personal responsibility and moral integrity.

No, it starts at the point, but is lost. Once it is lost, you don't get it back for the most part. Especially when it is so far gone that you see kids being born into the conditions we see today.

And where does the breakdown happen. It is different for everyone. I know a person who's house of cards all came tumbling down over a simple traffic ticket. She was homeless within a few months with her young child, and in prison within a few years. And this was a woman who had been born to a middle class family and certainly had moral integrity until her nightmare began.

And yes drug addiction can make relatively “normal” people into monsters. The worst part is those people often keep popping out babies that will be mentally crippled for life. But that is their right, and God forbid the government offer incentives to STOP that sort of thing, that would be very politically incorrect. Instead the government offers incentives to KEEP having kids.

And that is exaclty the presumptuous attitude that everyone gave her when she asked for help.

No she did not come from a dysfunctional family, but a small family that had come into tough times of their own and was in no position to be able to help her very much at all.

A minor traffic ticket was enough to set the ball rolling that led her to lose her car, her job, and her apartment all within a few months' time. She asked for more time to pay the ticket, the court refused and suspended her license. She drove to work, not knowing yet that her license had been suspended, got the car impounded. (She was rear-ended in traffic, and though there was insignifigant damage thought she had to wait for the police to arrive.) No money to get the car out of impound. She lost her first of two jobs that same day for not opening the store on time.

She knew she was in trouble right then, already being on a shoe-string budget, so she went to social services. Because she had made "too much" money the year before, she only qualified for a stern warning that they were going to contact CPS since the care of her child might be in jeopardy. (Which if they think that, then how the hell can they figure that she doesn't qualify for help?!)

She is able to switch her hours at her night job to days, so thank god school is in because now she can't afford a sitter, but she's also stuck working only four hours each shift waitressing since she has to walk or hitchhike back and forth in the middle of winter.

Well, one day a "really nice" guy picks her up, and becomes a somewhat regular customer. On the day she is served with eviction papers, he happens to stop in for some lunch. "Well, I have a really big place. You're welcome to come stay with me for a while." She has no place else to go, so she checks it out. The place seems clean enough, so she moves in with a few things, leaving everything else behind in the apartment she just lost.

And that's when he offers her a "new job." Dancing. It didn't take long to get her in the position where she would never escape the trap. But through it all, she never did use any drugs. She didn't even drink. But she was in the car with him when he got nailed with a large quantity of heroin and coc aine. And then again when they raided the house while they were out on bail. She got four years and lost her daughter to the system.

That sucks I live in Johnstown Ohio now but lived in Cbus for years. The city is really turning ugly that is why we moved to the country. But I had a similiar problem a few years back and I am a physically fit 28 year old country boy. So don't feel that they picked you out because of your stature. I was attempted to be mugged at red white and boom the four guys didn't get far with there attempt, but still it was a situation that I really didn't want to deal with or go to jail over thats for sure. I would just keep your head high and blow it off as some dumbass that will end up in Prison before he hits 20. I am sure you will live a better, longer, and more prosperious life than that idiot. I would also venture to say if your on this site your a geek and that guy would beet your ass. For the rest of you women and the lady that this happened to pepper spray is a good line of defense. But the best and cheapest way for a lady to defend her self is simple, scream RAPE at the top of your lungs loud and don't stop till he leaves. RAPE RAPE RAPE yell it guarantee that guy would have run. Even a thug will tell you if he heres a woman yelling rape he would come to help. It is a natural reaction that is instilled in most men that if a woman is yelling that to come to the rescue. A dog is a good thing to guaranteed if that was my women walking our two dogs our buddy dog would of tore that guy apart.

I've worked security(read bouncer)part-time for years in various clubs including strip clubs. Everyone of the dancers that I met made stupid choices that put them in the position that were in at the time. About 40% were single mothers. The smart ones worked themselves out of the dancing profession. The wiser ones ran away as fast as they could from the ever present drug dealing that goes on in the background of every nightclub not just strip clubs. Your friend's 'nice guy regular' drug dealer was nothing but a predator. I saw dozens of them working security. One particular girl who ended up doing time at Club Fed asked me to go with her as an escort to a party that her 'new friend' was throwing after hours. I told her 'no' because I knew her new friend was a drug dealer and I told her that he was a drug dealer. Six days later she gets busted with her 'new friend' who skips town without bailing her out. She eventually got ROR and ended up spending 6 months worth of pay to hire a lawyer to get herself out of the jamb. A month after she paid off her lawyer, she quit dancing. One of the smarter ones. Working in the club business is definitely not for the weak or stupid minded or the downtrodden becuase those places are filled with sharks and other predatory types and all of them aren't just men either.

Back to the OP: I'm not a small guy nor do I look like a potential victim of any kind but it only takes one wrong turn these days to end up in a bad place. It happened to me and another fellow military serviceman in London in the UK back in '96. The street thugs who attacked us were stupid or desperate and paid the price for it. An attack can happen to anyone anywhere at anytime. You just have to be prepared to defend yourself in the best way possible and pray for the best.

I don't buy into that "yell rape" thing at all! I think many in our society will NOT help, they have been programmed to not get involved, and if people believe they can count on others to rescue them they are fools. The MOST one can realistically hope for is that others MIGHT call the authorities on their cell phone.

And while dogs are great, in rough areas they belong AT HOME. I would never consider walking one of my dogs in a neighborhood that was not quite nice, rough neighborhoods have loose dogs, and often those dogs are of aggressive breeds and not treated so well. THe likelihood of a wandering pit bull seeing YOUR dog and targeting it (which is natural, I am not blaming pit bulls, I have had many wonderful dogs and many of them would start a fight with another strange dog given the chance) is too great in my mind. Having experienced dog fights I would NEVER want to be alone on a street trying to break up a fight (or attack) between my dog and a rogue pit bull. I love my dogs too much to risk that.

You are very soft hearted, truly. You really believe she ended up as a stripper, living with a drug dealer, and got arrested not once, but TWICE, for drug posession and somehow she bears no responsibility for any of it, in even the tiniest way.

I am not arguing with you, I know you believe that. I just hope you aren't one of those guys that always ends up "saving" abused people, especially women, that end up in amazingly bad situations though "no fault of their own" because those relationships often do not end well.

Maybe we should be taking a leaf out of the "gangster" inner city culture... she should have "popped a cap in his [SNIP]" (ie bullet to the gluteus maximus).

Kids play pranks on people all the time. I've been egged a few times no biggie, i'd rather get soaked to be honest.

This one time a guy threw an egg at me from a moving car and i caught the egg and threw it straight back at the car then ran of.

My point exactly - it ended with a soaking. If she drew her weapon and he drew his, it would more than likely ended up in a fatality.

I am sorry that this has happened to you. I am also sorry you feel so sad. I know not what to say except that I believe everything happens for a reason. Try to explore any possible positives about this act of violence. I know its hard but I bet there is a little gem for you hidding in this darkness.

Once again I use to live in Cbus and I had that same situation you are talking about a loose pit bull attacked my dog. Here is what I learned from that situation if you lift a pit bull up by his back legs and start kicking he will let go. Honestly I beet this dog where I know if I hit a man like this he would be in the hospital and this dog did not let go of my dog. I then grabbed both of the dogs back legs and procceeded to put my size 11 steel toe in his ass and sure enough he let go. I was so mad about about that they should kill all pitbulls and ban breeding of the breed. They are useless dumb attack dogs period. That by far was the scariest day of my life but when you see your dog being killed by another dog fear goes out the window in a hurry. Till this day I see one of those dogs and get a uneasy feeling and immediatly go into get that dog away from me mode.

Woah! Do you know why those dogs are like that? Because sleazy people have INTENTIONALLY bred those traits into them. Now its the pits, a few years ago it was Dobermans, if you ban pits then it will be some OTHER breed. Dobermans are fine, stable dogs these days since they are no longer popular with thugs.

The problem is NOT with the dogs, and I surely don't want to see another fine breed RUINED by the same scum that ruined American Staffordshire Terriers, and it WILL happen if pits are banned.

Stop the scum that has no business owning dogs or breeding and abusing them, don't blame the dogs. Banning breeds will be and ENDLESS cycle. Focus on the disease not the symptom.

OK crash course in dirty ass Columbus for those who don't happen to live in a trying place like us:

Columbus is built on a hill , so the FAR westside of Columbus inside highway I-270 is called the "Hilltop" respectively....less #ty then the next place I'll mention but still not a good place....

then there's the "Bottoms"....the downside of the hill going east towards downtown the closer you get to our downtown the worse it gets & the only thing separating the two is a river & bridge , now the bottoms is probably the worst place in Columbus you got crackheads , dropouts EVERYWHERE , degenerate white trash , drug dealers , car theifs , pitbulls every other house , and friendly neighborhood gangs , EVERYONE lives off welfare and probably at least 2 rapes a week that goes unreported , Thats Columbus in a nutshell , Ohioguy CAN back me up on this & I have lived here my whole life , consider this a tour guide if you ever visit
