Asteroid 2007 TU24 has NASA concerned.

Well Id like to clarify that the OP is where the whole 50/50 chance came from..so lets not go pointing fingers at the wrong people...I tthink everyone has lost a bit of focus here...

Just out of interest, I worked for a Swiss company, in Geneva in fact & it is an odd place to fly to. You come over the mountains & then have to descend into Geneva airport, often descending into the clouds below you.

It has a huge natual lake often called lake Geneva, properly called Lac Léman, which is obviously fed from the surrounding mountains.

If you wanted to hide away with natural pure water, etc & behind a substantial moutain range I can't imagine a better place.

Its also beautiful & we ate in old Geneva at a resteraunt used by President Clinton - very nice & they do a very nice Bavarian sausage. Its just down the street from a museum of an old Geneva house.

Thought this was interesting.

I have always kept my eye on the skies, occassionally catching glimpses of this or that, what ever "IT" might be, but the realization of an actual unplanned asteroid impact would be a hard pill to swallow for having such dreadful possibilities and being totally in control of having too report this to the population of the whole planet.This event is totally out of mans control, only having the humbility of admitting that it was bound to happen, ecspecially after trying to gain more defensive knowledge of this particular event taking place.
I'll be watching the S hemis. for the next few nights, "Lets just hope it is nothing more than a dusty snowball....."

I've known asteroids and comets where a threat since a child reading astronomy books. I expect them.

The math to pinpoint an impact is incredibly complex and very very hard to do without very accurate orbital data. But if the astronomers say it is unlikely, it probably is.

The fact is, that if you are worrying about such an asteroid and focusing on that, you should know that another could come at us from behind and we would never know it until it hit.

NORAD gets many "hits" on their network of sensors all the time from meteor impacts in our atmosphere. Some originally as big as nuclear explosive yields. This freaked them out when NORAD first started up and we went on military alert several times before they realized these meteor impacts where common and some large enough to register massive explosions and where not the enemies of the Cold War lobbing missiles.. The 1908 Tunguska impact is a good example of regular fare, and that might have been just a tiny little comet.

Get used to this. I've been expecting such possibilities most my life, but know the likelihood is not to good for a planet killer or city killer.

Not impossible though. I always keep an ear to the rail myself, and learned astronomy to help with the unreasonable fears.

Plans have been made for the Goldstone planetary radar to observe this object Jan 23-24 and for the Arecibo radar to observe it Jan 27-28 and then Feb 1-4. High resolution radar imaging is expected, which may permit later 3-D shape reconstruction.

I never understand the numbers

Sorry about this question, I have not read every post in this topic since it would be too late to ask this question after reading everything.

Since this Asteroid has NASA concerned will we be able to see it in the night sky? By what I have read it seems to me like this is going to happen soon? but for the life of me I can't seem to find info on what date/time this Asteroid will make its pass by earth.

Can anyone help me out because I am very interested in this and knowing the date or close to it would help me relax.

No we are not suppose to believe Nasa we should believe you omnipotent one for you are many times smarter than them and all the major observatories all over the world..

It is suppose to be like 3:30 in the morning, that is if there isnt to many wobbles.

Yeah right. Quit being stupid and smarten up. Now last night on coast to coast they had this:

hey were talking about this TU24..... and the guest speaker said a friend of his (think he said at NASA) sent him an email saying that it's wobbling........so that we had a 50/50 chance of it hitting earth. They talked about huge title waves if it were to hit in the ocean.

Like I said its still doing a wobble so that means they still can not really say for sure, this also has been stated to me by Ward at the University as well so as long as it keeps on with a wobble to its pattern we dont know what will happen.!

Well, I just don't get it.

Even if we are perfectly safe from all the doomsday scenarios, I find it very odd that I have not heard one mention of TU24 on national or local news, or NPR.

What about "market share" people?!!!!! You know, the "18-58 conspiracy theoriest" demographic? What about he "11-82 amatuer astronomer" demographic? Huge people! Huge!

Are the only ones smart enough to capitalize on this (semi?) important event the over-the-top doomsday profiteers???

I do also find however, that the "History Channel's" broadcasting of a variety of shows acknowledging various doomsday scenarios of celestial origin, quite ominous.

Another random thought:

If the world was gonna end, soon, like next effing week, you would the think that maybe the Fed would have put a little more punch in their "economic stimulus" package? Like maybe instead of a couple hundred dollar tax rebate to those making 75K anually or less, they might have given me a grand or two?

Why not just get everyone "high" before the rock hits? Kinda like they do with oxygen in an airliner before it crashes?

Hell, how about give everyone a new Ford Focus!!!

Ford is practically giving them away right now! God knows, the maintenance contracts alone would be a much needed "stimulus" for that company....Oops, sorry, we'll all be dead!

Hey, welcome to this topic! Thanks for being so informed. That news story contains all the SAME information we have known since Jan 19th. That was 5 days ago. We have 4 days until TU24 gets here. Goldman observatory did a 4hr 45min radio track yesterday. (which if you read what you decided to copy and paste above, you would know that!), I found links to an Australian observatory that tracked it today, where is that information......what parameters have changed? Are the chances better, worse, or about the same? Those of us informed want to stay that way?

Secondly, I think you are so mistaken in saying "all the info you need to see it is here on nasa". And just now I typed that I pondered, why did you say HERE instead of THERE, do you work for NASA or something? You should choose your words more carefully, I mean the way I read it you imply you have a relationship with NASA! Just for your information that NASA news article is nearly identical to the pre-approved news coverage this thing is finally getting in several countries and tomorrow even more countries I suspect no that the AP has picked it up. I don't buy one word of it! More media manipulation and spoon feeding to the general populace. I simply don't believe you, show me the data!

Is this the same guy that was posted on the internet as saying he had a friend at NASA but couldn't disclose who it was? That coast to coast program sounds fishy.

The one night i miss the coast to coast show, that's when they talk about the asteroid!

Out of ALL the sites dealing with space even the NON NASA sites the only site that says 50/50 is some conspiracy site.

So you are taking the word of one off the wall (doomsday/conspiracy) site over NUMEROUS non Nasa affiliated sites who say its not a threat.

I bet you are the same type who falls for those email scams coming out of Africa and gets taken for 1000s

If WD5 is passing Mars at a short distance of only 16,000 miles, and we supposedly have equipment already set up to catch footage, this will be so interesting !
