the joke goes like this.

you tell the joke, with the punchline told with gusto and laughter. a few people in the room, who already know the joke makes no sense laugh along. then you spend as much time as necessary trying to get the folks who don't get it to say they got it. you retell it, you change the tone in your voice, make the elephants giraffes, etc.

it's always good for a laugh (at someone else's expense).
