If you can not rate a post, a little bar on the top of the screen says so.

The number of stars under your name = the average number of stars your posts get.

I think.

So according to that little 9 by my name, 9 people rated my posts and the average was 3.

That is what it appears to be to me as well. For some reason, on this thread a few posts came up with stars already highlighted before I clicked anything. I am not sure why that would be, so maybe it’s still not working in its final form yet.

So I guess we have to wait for the official word from S.O. on how to properly use this new function.

And what exactly the stars on the posts as well as the stars in members profiles mean.

I just hope people don't get their feelings hurt when people give them a 1 or 2 star rating.

Ok I lied I don't care about feelings because I have none!

But I certainly hope people do not give 5 stars to everyone, or 1 stars to someone just because they don't like em!

EDIT: Would be nice to see a half star rating available (4.5 3.5 ect)

SO is apparently still working on it. There is now a number in between parenthesis, just before the stars in members profiles.

Now a little number showed up next to the stars, maybe how many folks have voted on that post, or possibly on all your posts so far. The same number is showing up in the Avatar area as well.

Honestly I don't think I like these, I mean not only are they yellow (the colour yellow pisses me off),
but they break the flow of things.

Add to that I'm not even sure what they are or why we have/need them.

One thing I noticed already, is that once you cast your vote you cannot recast it at a different number or adjust it. It also seems like it occasionally gets one less star then what I clicked, so if I am clicking three it is coming back with two, it could be I just have bad aim sometimes though…

Also, the system is currently unavailable in PTS and BTS.

SO does things like this all the time -- just dropping new features in without warning -- and I think it's kind of a fun tradition, because you never know what might be next.

I can only begin to imagine what sort of things he's tinkering on right now in the SkeptiCave...
