A new forum will open soon on AbovePolitics.com. When a member applies to be a candidate, the system will create a new thread in the forum, and members can reply. Only candidates will be able to then create new threads, and anyone can reply.

Yes it does.

Someone who doesn't even live in America and who isn't American wants to tell all Americans what to do. That's obnoxious and wrong. (no offense intrepid)

I'm not saying that they have any rights to tell us what to do. They may have a different view on it is all that I meant. Sometimes, the casual observer gets something that those in the fray miss.

Would a middle aged white woman make a good NAACP president? NO.

Would the Protestant Queen of England make a good Catholic Pope? NO.

Would a foreigner who doesn't even live here, and doesn't understand the spirit of America, and doesn't have that American spirit in his/her heart make a good US President? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

(MOST) of our ancestors left other countries and their way of doing things to come here to a different way of life. We didn't want to live like THEM. We have our own spirit. We are fiercely independent and proud of it. IT'S OUR CULTURE. We are NOT European or Canadian. We don't want to be European or Canadian. (euro-socialism is failing btw). We are Americans. They aren't. That's all there is to it.

[edit on 1/14/2007 by FlyersFan]

But we all hail from other locations, so we have a bit of their culture in us. Do you think that based on our being American, that we have any right to tell the rest of the world how to behave?

When I see a true American, I see anyone, hailing from anywhere on the planet. Why you ask? Well, it's because we are, as a nation and a People, comprised of every nationality on the globe. I think that says a lot for who we are. It also lets the proverbial "melting pot" metaphor stick better.

I just think we need to be a bit more tolerant of other's opinions, even though we may not share them. I think intrepid might have some good ideas. I don't agree with everything everyone says, but I can see rational thinking once in a while. When I do, I commend it.

TheBorg

P.S. Semper!!

I was wondering when you were gonna jump into this. Best of luck running bud.

For Democracy...

I wouldn't mind being somebody's Vice President as long as I don't have to do that much because I'm too damned lazy. I'll bring some levity to the ticket.

Also, assuming we get elected and the President, whoever that may be, gets assassinated, I'll be President and how bad could that be? Bowel health for everyone!

Peace

I'd like to address the issue of staff participating in this election. Some see it as an advantage but I think it is exactly the opposite. If say, I warn someone for an infraction do you think I'm gaining any popularity there? If I applaud someone are they going to think I'm buying votes? What about a move, closure or deletion of a thread? I'm going to go about my duties as usual. That being said, if I do well in this it will be in spite of the fact that I'm a staff member. And I intent to do well, wait until you see the platform.

I was under the assumption that votes were annonymous, how can one suck up? I don't see how and it would be counterproductive to this venture.

Aha, back to your old viscious self, ic Intrepid. Let's hope people don't judge that book by its cover, cause we've certainly had our fill of Presidental agenda spear-tipped with merciless sharp blades.

As to your comments, those very things you mention is why, in essense, it is a conflict of interest to have the staff participate. But that is just one man's opinion, apparently, cause no one else dares agree with me. In public.

But hey, that's cool. Just thought it might be nice for a change to have an election completely focused on platform and not popularity. Let's see what the people REALLY think, when it comes down to issues, not when it's about recognition. Take away the recognition and hey, all you got left is issues and platform. Imagine that.

That's what I'm counting on. Ask around, I'm not a very popular staff member.

BTW, how was I vicious?

Obviously, I'm referring to your avatar, and that's about it. You know, first impressions are everything? Candidates need to be careful of impressions. Clearly it seemed to matter to you, when you switched avatars upon announcement for the running, and realized that maybe that first avatar wasn't such a good idea. Why? Impressions. They matter. And that's why I am trying to get you guys to consider doing this the other way. So that they DON'T matter as much. Aight. That's it, said my piece about it, I'm done. W/E.

See??!? See?!??! You BIG BULLY. You do it so much you don't even notice anymore.

I don't get the crying. It's just a fun exercise that may even prove to be educational. Why not let mods/staff participate? Let 'em have a little fun once in awhile.

If you're looking at this as "unfair", man how do you survive in the real world? If nothing else, look at it like The Longest Yard. YOU GET TO PLAY THE GUARDS. Get some shots in, if that's your deal.

There's no crying in politics. Ask Ed Muskie.
