Russia has lost a staggering 87 percent of the total number of active-duty ground troops it had prior to launching its invasion of Ukraine and two-thirds of its pre-invasion tanks, a source familiar with a declassified US intelligence assessment provided to Congress told CNN.

Still, despite heavy losses of men and equipment, Russian President Vladimir Putin is determined to push forward as the war approaches its two-year anniversary early next year and US officials are warning that Ukraine remains deeply vulnerable. A highly anticipated Ukrainian counteroffensive stagnated through the fall, and US officials believe that Kyiv is unlikely to make any major gains over the coming months.

This is an intel assessment, based on sometimes incomplete information, so we should not consider it totally accurate. It is probably close to it, plus-minus a few percent.

That is a staggering loss of human life for Russia. I'm not talking about the weaponry; this is people. Nearly every person that started the war in Ukraine is now gone -- or incapacitated -- unable to fight again. Some of these were convicts, given chances at a new life, in exchange for a few months at the front lines. Many others were seasoned warriors, their experience and skill lost forever.

Of the 360,000 troops that entered Ukraine, including contract and conscript personnel, Russia has lost 315,000 on the battlefield, according to the assessment. 2,200 of 3,500 tanks have been lost, according to the assessment. 4,400 of 13,600 infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers have also been destroyed, a 32 percent loss rate.

“As of late November, Russia lost over a quarter of its pre-invasion stockpiles of ground forces equipment,” the assessment reads. “This has reduced the complexity and scale of Russian offensive operations, which have failed to make major gains in Ukraine since early 2022.”

Putin has now upped his military and defense spending to nearly 50% of his country's GDP, mirroring the 1930s Germany military spending and preparation. But even with that large increase in military spending, how does one replace the trained warriors that are now gone? It takes time to train someone up well enough for combat. Or you can train them poorly and add to the numbers of the deceased.

Is there a draft coming in Russia? Will he conscript unwilling civilians and send them off to battle? Will he train them up well, or will he cut corners?

Russia lost 400,000 men since February 2022. Kill ratio is probably about 1 : 1. Both sides lost 400,000 men since February 2022.

Shocking really they lost more soldiers in a year then the US lost in 20 years fighting the GWOT .

300,000 men .

That's an Army of men , Multiple Corps of Soldiers .

A Corp is 50,000
A Division is 10,000 to 20,000.
A Brigade is 3,000.
A Battalion is 1,000 to 500
A Company is 200 to 100 .
A Platoon is 30
A Squad is 6.

Who Knew Russia was so bad at Fighting , that or someone is really bad at counting.

Putin needs to smarten up and take note how the US is doing it.
Open your borders and let in fresh young troops, and also workers to replace those sent off to war.

Considering it's US intel, I don't believe a word of it. I think it's propaganda.

That said, I can't prove or disprove it, so I'll just have to wait for the smoke to clear and hopefully get some semblance of the truth. Nah, who am I kidding?

I don't know why you assume a kill ratio of 1 : 1. The defender almost always has an advantage over the invader.

Here's a recent article where the researchers used the best mathematical models they could come up with to estimate the actual kill ratio, taking into account the fact that both sides will fudge their reports for propaganda purposes:

"Estimating troop losses on both sides in the Russia-Ukraine war"

theloop.ecpr.eu...

They estimate the kill ratio as about 4.5 to 1 in Ukraine's favor as of February,2023.

My point is Russia lost 87% of all men since starting the illegal invasion of Ukraine. In two years.

Is that not big enough news to report?

Why does that trigger you and make you mad? And some others here.

Human life has not much value in Russia , when it comes to Tzar sending men to battle .

Sure they lost many many times more in WW2, but then they got tons of goods from US ...planes , food, machinery etc etc...

It`s common view there is Russia to obey Tzar and die for motherland. Although it stem`s from neurotic view of world affairs from 1700s ...

"at the bottom of Kremlin's neurotic view of world affairs is a traditional and instinctive Russian sense of insecurity" US ambassador to the USSR, George Kennan

Aprox 14000 Ukrainians killed by their own govt from 2014-2022...

Apparently Ukraine doesn't value life much either.

It's not about agreeing.

It's about the fact that the Ukrainian gov't killed their own people prior to Russia's invasion.

300,000 men is a lot, but it's a drop in the bucket for a country of 140 million people.

Both sides carry out offense and defense in Donba. Neither side is defense or offense. Both sides are genetically identical and have plenty of military hardware left over from USSR. Kill ratio is about 1 : 1 for both sides.
