It's not another strain of flu.

It's the cold.

Buying some extra supplies isnt panicking. The WHO and the CDC actually told us to prepare for a pandemic. Buying some supplies would be part of the preparation process. People should have an emergency supply of water and non perishable foods anyway for any emergency that may come whether it be a hurricane, war, economic collapse, pandemic or whatever.

With that out of the way let's compare this covid -19 to the flu.

The flu -
Influenza has an R.0. Value of 1.3 (this means that for every person that gets infected they will infect 1.3 other people on average). At this infection rate the flu infects about 13% of the U.S. population every year killing about 14k people a year. This gives the flu a mortality rate of about .04%.

Covid-19 -
covid-19 has an R.0. Value of 4.7 - 6.6. It is projected to infect 60% - 80% of the population of the world. Even with the low-ball mortality rate of 3.6% we are looking at a death toll of well over 8,000,000 people in the United States alone. This is a far cry from the 14k people that will die from the flu.

This is why people are concerned. They have a damn good reason. This ain't no flu. This is the real deal folks, we are at the beginning stages of a pandemic and we should all be preparing just as the WHO and the CDC has asked us to do.

All my numbers are accurate and come from the World Health Organization and from the Centers for Disease Control.

Finally, someone with some common sense.

Although I must say, many of us have been telling those around us to stock up for weeks now because it was apparent that when the 90% of unaware catches on, all hell would break lose on supplies and create shortages.

Critical thinking. Through decades of fear mongering the Pandemics the MSM has shoved on us.

My son had H1N1 (swine Flu) back in 2010. All hype and large hospital bills. Why? Because my ex thought he was gonna die. Because of the fear mongering MSM.

He’s alive and well 10 years later. One night and 10k in the hospital later.

10k in the hospital for 1 night, are you joking, that is criminal....

No wonder some American people want to pretend this virus is a hoax, they cannot afford to get sick....

OP, simply sit back with the knowledge that stressing oneself out over something hampers the immune system & makes one more susceptible to illness (cortisol is not our friend in large amounts) Knowing that, you can write off the members freaking out as people shooting themselves in the foot without even realizing it.
It's ok to savor the schadenfreude occasionally, really. They do it to themselves.

My view is that this is serious seeing as the virus is going to spread exponentially, doubling every 6 days or so according to current estimates. This means that, with a 20% hospitalization rate, our healthcare facilities will be full in early May - and don't forget, that the number of cases will double over the next 6 days.

If Washington has 100 cases today:
March 14: 200
March 20: 400
March 26: 800
April 1: 1600
April 7: 3200
April 14: 6400
April 20: 12200
April 26: 24400
May 2: 48800
May 7: 100,000 or so
May 13: 200,000
May 19: 400,000
May 23: 800,000
May 29: 1 million cases in Washington State - 5% ICU Bed Rate = 50,000 ICU beds needed

This is why people are concerned. They have a damn good reason. This ain't no flu.

And yet they keep parroting this line, even after knowing it killed 8 elderly people IN ONE building within a week and a half.

Granted , the elderly are already at risk, especially with health problems, but even the Flu doesnt have that sort of mortality rate.

Im in the demographic that should be concerned if I get it, and therefore should take every precaution to keep my immune system up, and be vigilant with my symptoms.

I get the flu almost every other year, never have a concern.

For me and my wife, this isnt just business as usual, this is a very real threat.

So blow it off all you want people, the dense seeem to do that until it hits close to home, then all the sudden they are concerned.

These are the same people that never take the time to actually look at the individual cases, and what it does to the bodies of those who have expired because of it. Hint: what it did to those people was NOTHING like the flu.

But by all means, be blase about it, handle it JUST like the flu, and when you get it and pass it off to an older person in your family and they die as you recover.

Feel free to come back and tell us how it "aint no thang" because youre fine.

And now they are all bitching because they have no toilet paper, and making memes making fun of those hoarding it.

They dont see the irony in the fact that they are no better than the people hoarding it because they are BOTH unprepared for situations where they should have stocked up on supplies and food.

And if it gets worse, it wont just be toilet paper they arent finding on the shelves or hand sanitizer.

At least the people NOW hoarding and stockign up will be prepared in the instance it DOES get worse, the ones making fun of them just like now, will find themselves in a world of "sh!t" And i bet they wont be making memes to laugh it off.

but by all means, keep poking fun.

After all, those of us who were prepared arent and wont panic, because we wont have to

Pretty much, it's best to just let Darwin's law sort out the population, if this all goes pair shaped nothing we say will change a thing.

Countries shutting down, quarantines, halt in trade, stock market tanking, oil prices being manipulated, turkey opening borders to migrants, just another normal day...
