But, DB, we're already dead. The virus has killed us and we just don't know it yet. Didn't you get the memo?

No, no, no. You recover first and then in 60 days, you transform into a walker.

At least we know a possible solution to the Fermi paradox.

Neither.

My sources say that the only way this spreads is by toilet paper.

I'm sure the overwhelming sheer number of cases idea is a large part of it... but I also think it builds on itself. That is, it infects a little, causes a small cytokine storm, reinfects, causes another small cytokine storm, reinfects, causes yet another small cytokine storm... eventually it reaches the point where people are overwhelmed. If there are enough hosts in a small enough area, it simply keeps coming until the good hosts die out then it calms down. That explains why this thing is so worrisome in nursing homes... plenty of incident hosts and older, more susceptible hosts.

If your survival truly depended on being able to get that last roll of TeePee or bottle of purell, then you're in much deeper trouble than this virus could ever cause.

Sad thing is while the bottles of alcohol and purell are gone, there is a near endless supply of soap which is infinitely better for cleaning your hands with. And the mask hoarding? What is the purpose of that again?

I hope the maskers have a plan to wipe down and/or isolate every last bit of food/water brought into their home, and they've bothered to establish decontamination procedures/crossed technical hurdles and set up appropriate hot/warm/cold zones to properly use those DECON procedures. Otherwise, the masks are a complete waste of time and unlikely to prevent infection in any significant number of people

This is the flu. A new flu, but the flu all the same.

I am not stockpiling on water, toilet paper, or rice and canned meat.

I did stock up on scotch, vodka, wine, and beer but that's because I'm an aging booze hound and it was a Friday.

I won't tell people not to stock up, but you're wasting a perfectly good worry on what (in my opinion) is a minor issue.

I am sorry but you are wrong. This is not the flu. It is much more virulent and much more contagious, and that's only if you get the ancestral (S) strain which is what causes about a 3.4%-3.5% death rate from those infected.

If you have a respiratory illness, if you are diabetic, etc, the chances of dying from COVID-19 increases from 10% -15%

The mutated (L) strain of COVID-19 is even more dangerous and more contagious.

You are right on this, but people should be worried and not treat this "just like the flu."

In Italy, which still only a small portion of the population have it, they have decided already not to treat old people with COVID-19. People think in China it is better than in Italy and China doesn't/hasn't lied about their real numbers of infected and dead from the COVID-19?...

Notice how businessinsider worded the following article.

Faced with tough choices, Italy is prioritizing young COVID-19 patients over the elderly. That likely 'would not fly' in the US.

BTW, I have the normal amount of toilet paper I had since before this virus, but I buy it in Sam's Club which they sell it in bulk and it's cheaper.

Thankfully the U.S. produces most of our food in the country, so it's unlikely that we will run out of food unless transportation of products is stopped if it becomes really bad.

However, as I have stated several times, do not treat this "like another flu season." This is a lot worse, and much more deathly than the flu.

BTW, 70% of the strains found in China are the L strain.

On the origin and continuing evolution of SARS-CoV-2

And that's only IF the Chinese are not lying, which they do a lot when it comes to something like this.

Masks, most of them, are mostly useless as the virus can find openings in the regular "dust masks" most people are buying. Buying "dust masks" is a waste of money.

Only N95 particulate respirators or better can stop the virus. Then you have to cover your eyes and skin, and decontaminate everything. For most people this is not possible to do, and for now not needed.

Not to mention the fact that the virus can enter through your eyes, or with skin contact with a contaminated surface.

It's a new flu.

Imagine if we didn't have the vaccine for the seasonal flu.

The patterns, deaths, infection rates might be very similar.

It's not the flu, nor is it a strand of it.

Oh sorry, it's a corona virus, so it has more in common with the viruses that cause the common cold. Better?

Get over it ... for all practical intents and purposes, the illness this thing causes is indistinguishable from the flu. It causes the same symptoms, even down to pneumonia which is also an effect of severe influenza. Both viruses target the same systems of the body even.

If you get it, you'll feel the same as you would with a cold or flu.

And after this settles into our collective seasonal illness bag, if you get it from year to year, you won't tell the difference between it and any of the other thousand and one strains of seasonal bug.

Put it this way :

- If you win, we have a lot of non-perishable goods that we have in surplus.
- If we 'win', which isn't a 'win', we lose 2-5% of the population, maybe more.

Choose, or
Stop the spread.
If you feel a temperature/cough, stay home.

edit : Oh, and the 10 Second Test is probably pretty good anyway too :

- Fill your lungs as much as you can and hold for ten seconds.
- If you can do that without coughing or anything like that, you should be fine lung-wise.
- Test to be conducted daily.

If you feel a temperature/cough, stay home.

You should do that with influenza as well (within reason).

Ketsuko's point is well-taken. The virus is technically a corona virus of a similar type to SARS, as opposed to an influenza virus or rhinovirus (common cold). However, all three types of virii do similar things to the body: chills, fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, susceptibility to pneumonia, etc. The only major difference, so far as most people would be concerned, would be the severity of the symptoms. With this WuFlu (which is how I will continue to refer to it since people are already crying "racist" over the freakin' name), that severity can range from less than the common cold to more than a serious influenza.

Therefore, the colloquial application of the descriptor "flu" is as acceptable as calling a severe cold a "flu."

I really don't think the virus cares what we call it.

Now, please excuse me while I go get a "Coke"... got me some Mountain Dew in the fridge.

To be fair, probably none of the data we have right now is accurate. But because there's no cure or treatment right now, and infection rates are all over the place, it's probably best to be cautious.

But don't hoard. We don't currently have any food shortages in the US. Let's not create artificial ones.

Supermarkets may be out of stock this week. But they're all re-ordering. And they'll have stuff next week.

People are calm, because the initial shock of the closings and other measures, is wearing off.

But like after a big snowstorm, they will get tired of "hunkering down" in a few days.

But unlike a big snowstorm, they will not be able to return to normal for....weeks, or months.

This is not a Socialist Country filled with sheep that will do what we're told, without question.

Can you sense "RIOTS and REBELLIONS" are inbound?

And note that China will be watching on, ordered, united, and stronger than ever as you guys bicker amongst each other over "first world problems". Maybe the age of western dominance will come to an end by implosion from within, without a shot fired from China/Russia.

Delaying the spread allows time for the medical establishment to research and hopefully find a vaccine. Any delay i the spread is a good thing. At least to people who think with their minds and not with their hearts.

And this response completely ignores the logic of the comment it was replying to.

What happens when you open t hings back up after 'delaying'? It starts all over again.

It is a simple question, and I have seen no logical response that addresses it.
