I had a feeling Trump would pull some bonehead stunt and pulled out of the Market 3 months ago.

It might lead to a full-blown trade war but my reading of the intricacies suggests not. Things are escalating in all areas from the Chinese though (South China Seas, Military-strength bragging, etc) so who knows.

Eventual conflict would seem inevitable just from a historical standpoint of how Superpowers interact. In that case sooner rather than later would seem better. Although it's probably a zero sum game.

What it does show is that China seems unwilling to admit that the trade deals are unfair in their favor and that doesn't say much for them.

lol China cutting out getting pork from the US. The only reason they started getting it in the first place was because of their toxic agricultural practices?

Guess only the filthy rich will be able to eat clean pork? lmao

China is ruthless, screw em!

Oh dear. What a shame. Never mind.

Seriously, after Trump started this nonsense, did anyone expect China not to respond in kind ?

Exportts are 21% of the US hog market value and it amounts to around $1 Bil per year to China. Even more amusing is this...
WaPo

Hong Kong-based WH Group dominates U.S. pork exports to China through its American subsidiary, Smithfield. The Chinese government has proposed a dramatic 25 percent tariff on U.S. pork products, 309,000 tons of which were shipped to China last year.

In other words, to punish Trump, Beijing is slapping a massive tariff on an industry which is dominated by a Chinese owned hog producer and export operation within the US. LMAO... you can't make this stuff up.

The stock movement is simply elasticity moving stuff around. They're removing some slack, slashing out some deadwood which was in sore need of being culled during a record bull market run. The logic behind national trade protection and tariffs is still very sound and the right thing to do. Let China's tantrum do exactly what it will ultimately do if America refrains from wimping out and flinches: that being hurt China.

If you look at the numbers--at least thus far--it seems to show China's known M.O. in "saving face." 50 Billion as opposed to 3 Billion. Think about it.

In retaliation for $50 billion in U.S. trade tariffs against Chinese imports, China laughably hits back with $3 their own billion tariffs against the U.S.  According to most reporting Beijing has selected U.S. pork and scrap aluminum as targets for a 25% tariff, along with wine and fruit tariffs around 15%.

It should be emphasized the approach by China is rather ridiculous considering the Chinese government purchased the largest U.S. pork manufacturer Smithfield in 2013 for $5 billion; at the time the purchase price was 30% more than the company was worth.  Smithfield, now a Chinese company, represents 25% of all U.S. pork products.

Do you really think China is going to not import it’s own pork products… or subject them to a domestic tax?  Think about it.  It’s ridiculous.  China knows they have ZERO leverage in a trade-dispute with the U.S., they cannot afford to lose access to the U.S. market.

The example of Smithfield foods is exactly what we have outlined in how China cannot sustain itself and needs to control the assets of foreign countries.  Hence, their one-road/one-belt program for securing products and raw materials.  China is a dependent economy, they need to exploit global trade to survive.  China cannot feed itself. This is the inherent flaw within their short-sighted authoritarian government-controlled economic model.

Again, for emphasis, the Chinese government underwrote the purchase of Smithfield foods in 2013.  They paid 30% more than the company was worth because they were securing access to food just like they would any other raw material (uranium, minerals, etc).  China also purchases U.S. politicians to retain their ability in this regard.

China Announces $3b Tariffs on U.S. Imports – Pork, Scrap Aluminum, Wine and Fruits

Could it escalate? Sure. Should we back down and keep taking it like some here would suggest? Chan says No.

Between all the corruption at the USPTO (Patent Office), and how DC hands China our nation while not making them crack down on all that sort of BS, there's no point in even being an inventor anymore. So when you're a natural born inventor its an even more grim dystopia we all live in.

There's a simple fact that no country can escape - the US wins a trade war against ANY country and ANY combination of countries.
The golden goose for consumption is the USA. Full stop.

Why would they tarrif scrap aluminum? Wouldnt that make it less economical for their people there to import and semlt the stuff... the same stuff we're tarrifiing them from sending US newly milled metal stuff (all while w're supposed to be trying to instigate aluminum MFG'ing here meaning we're striving to need all our aluminum scrap?)?

I binge watch people eating street food in foreign countries and think to myself all the time, how many people in the US could sustain their family if they weren't forced to jump thru so many hoops to have a simple food cart? Let's not kid ourselves, corporate food chains DO NOT have great food!

There ya go. My impression of "regulations" is they tend to squeeze if not roadblock little guys from ever getting their own thing going, when the big boys already have the loot to persevere thru all the flaming hoops.
