Does anyone know when it started?
It looks like it spread fast.

About 1 AM local time.

4 am

"Fire services first called at 1:16 AM..."

Truly awful.

Let's hope it was an accident, and hope everyone gets out alive.

There's reports of people that were trapped inside, there's going to be a body count it seems.

It was an issue with fire escape if there was ever a fire, not a fire in itself..

Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in our landlords failure to deal with a serious health and safety issue that recently developed at the entrance/exit to Grenfell Tower. This matter is of particular concern as there is only one entry and exit to Grenfell Tower during the Improvement Works and the potential for a fire to break out in the communal area on the walkway does not bear thinking about as residents would be trapped in the building with no way out!

Here's hoping but from witnesses reporting - it looks like that's not going to happen. My thoughts and prayers with all involved

Twitter... Numerous reports of people trapped on the roof initially. No word on if they were rescued or not.

It seems this might have been a building inhabited mostly by Muslims. According to Sky News...

ETA: Sky reporter mentioned that it's Ramadan and many of the residents might have awakened early in observance...

BBC Radio 5 - hosted by Rhod Sharp - witnesses calling in

Should be accessible in most localities.

I read your source again and yes, it indeed was under renovation.

The large scale works included the installation of insulated exterior cladding, new double glazed windows and a new communal heating system

So yes, there is proof.

Moreover it speaks exactly to the before mentioned fears. It's a shame to see it realized.

Renovations were completed May 2016 according to THIS source

Praying again for London. I hope this was an accident and the loss of life is minimal. From what is being reported, there will be some, sadly.

Omfg you can hear people screaming for help in one of the posted videos.
I'm praying that they somehow managed to get everyone out.

Wow, there's just nothing left. A burnt out husk...

Anyone see that blue-ish flame in the middle? (lower levels) Would that be a gas pipe? looks like plasma.. weird.

The hottest fire is on the lower left. white hot.

depends on HOW the tower was designed if it would fall. when fire gets hot enough, it turns concrete into breakable lime, and it crumbles.

Hope everyone got out, but it looks dire.

There doesn't seem to be any evacuations being carried out, the firefighters have been pulled back probably from fear of collapse.

This is truly horrible

Noooo not quite burnt out yet! There's a few bits down below that aren't burning yet.

Just then some of the flames really roared up a story or two in height, not sure if its wind causing it or no.

This is truly awful. Not even an external fire escape.

A resident supposedly is telling the Sky reporter there that the fire started on the 4th floor.

If that's true, we're probably looking at just about the worst case scenario.
