One missile to Kim Jongs location and the soldiers will celebrate their freedom, just like when Dorothy melted the Wicked Witch of the West.

So China is cool with air strikes on the north ad long as it is only troops from the south that push past the DMZ? Usually I don't get caught up in the fear porn but with the situation in SK with their president we just might see something big go down.

Specifics were not mentioned, only that in a unified Korea they did not want United States troops stationed above the former DMZ.

I somehow doubt that.

We're talking about a very heavily indoctrinated culture. Imagine watching Man in High Tower or Handmaid's Tale only being taught that it *is* the rest of the world and your little slice of "heaven" is the only "free" place left on earth and your glorious leader is the god-sent man who keeps you safe from that life of horror.

That is growing up in North Korea.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall during the meeting at the White House.

I wish that we were being told more about what's going on but for security reasons this information cannot be disclosed. I suspect this week will be quite interesting.

As for the missiles the question is not the missile technology, but the ability to attach a nuclear payload to one. The NK-08/Nk-14 variants could reach out and touch Chicago, and it's larger cousin the Taepodong-2 (an operational and tested ICBM platform) can reach anywhere in the US. For however psychotic and irrational he may be as a leader, Kim is not stupid. CSIS Missile Defense Project

Missile technology aside, the Norks have usable nuclear weapons. See my previous post for the sources. I've taken the time to cite the most expert men in the area of North Korea and their capabilities: Joseph DeTrani and Col. David Maxwell. The former is CIA and the latter is ex Chief of SOCKOR and a professor at Georgetown.

Yea not hardly.

For better or worse, if we cut off the head the entire rest of the country would be pretty well up #'s creek without a paddle or a canoe. When your population is so indoctrinated that they're more than willing to weep and wail at the very sight of 'dear leader' (reminder: it's a country where that's NOT a tongue in cheek reference to the head guy), there's not going to be a lot of rejoicing when that guy is gone.

Yes we do know their nuclear capabilities. They have several tens (as in multiples of ten) usable nuclear weapons.

No one is backed against a wall yet.

There is a reason you are not in charge of our military. Attacking North Korea without exhausting diplomatic channels first is a huge mistake. You would start WW3.

It is my hope that WW3 does not start. However, it looks like this will be inevitable.

Lil' Kim strikes me as one who would not - and has not yet - responded to diplomacy or sanctions (like Iran). He is different from his father in that Kim Jong-il would spout idle threats from time to time that didn't amount to anything. Lil' Kim, on the other hand, comes across as one who is bent on retaining his power even under the threat of war and death. No matter how many innocent people get hurt.

One can step up to the abyss so many times without falling in. This is getting worse fast.

I doubt it.

No one wants to nuke everything over one mad man in his tiny little pond.

By that logic, Europe needs to fix both the Middle East *and* Africa ... Maybe S. America too.

Thank you for including both links.....which were quite interesting!

I didn't see a reference to land attack cruise missiles in either report. Is this something that NK is capable of?

According to what I read, they do have chemical and bio weapons capability. Even if they don't use nukes, the other weapons will - if used - inflict much damage (to put it mildly).

I will look for your other post. Thank you.

And we have been, but the ME is a mess. We fixed europe enough (Germany was fine when we left). S. America....is gonna take a bit of time.
NK is a easy fix that will stablize the region and allow the globe to focus in on whats left.

I have talked to Korean War vets who feel its our mess as well. We need to finish what we started.

Thing is, this is a easy win for the hearts/minds if its done carefully. big brass only and I think if China will allow, the US should rebuild aka Japan style with heavy investment to get them up and running asap. in a decade the whole peninsula could be a workhorse and consumer that would drive up the global economy and open a lot of good new markets. Many reasons to get this done.

But if China doesn't like it..well still a better result to let China take the helm and let them rebuild..but really it should be up to SK. Sucks that US is (once again) poised to be a nation builder, but it is what it is.

The invitation for all cross-party members of the Senate is to give a briefing of intention and to gain a consensus among members to back both sanctions and military action if required. That is the way I see it.

Trump does not want his hands tied by requiring Senate approval if things turn really sour during the shut down, so he is seeking sanction and approval from the Senate before it closes.

The case for military action through missile strikes will be for surgical strikes to achieve the following:

1) reduce Kim Jong-un's nuclear capability by taking out all nuclear support and logistics and missile installations that are known to be static. There is very little they can do about mobile missile launches until they are fired off.

2) take out installations producing material for the production of nuclear weapons.

3) take out Kim Jong-un and his support leadership if possible.

The severity of any missile attack on Kim Jong-un will depend entirely on his ability to respond to and attack the carrier fleet. Trump and his advisers obviously feel there could be American casualties and deaths, so a consensus from the Senate should help to mitigate political questions. Many North Korean people would be expected to move away from the area of conflict, which should see North East Korea and the capital hit. The people know that they cannot go South, so a northwards exodus towards the Chinese should be expected. Some may try to cross into Russian territory.

Harder sanctions will be imposed first, with penalties of missile strikes should Kim Jong-un flout them. Unlike with the Syria strikes, Trump is going the legal route this time.

i see alot of people willing to let china take over N.korea but id like to ask u why u believe that would be good for the north koreans or the south koreans for that matter. if anything china has showed us time and time again they have no qualms with persecuting a foreign people. just ask the tibetans. i just dont really see much of an upside for the north koreans. maybe they open up the borders and let them flood into s korea while the chinese move in their own citizens. who knows but i dont have a good feeling about china being there.
