Cut the funding and arming and I'd imagine it would go a long way to reduce these incidents. Unfortunately every man and his dog seems to have there own jihadist army these days.
There willbe a lot of people laughing there way to the bank tonight and I don't think many of them are what you'd call Muslim fundimentalists

Breaking: 80 hostages freed.

So around 90 more to go. Hoping for the best! But I think all the important hostages, i.e French and American are kept seperately.

BBC live:

Twenty Indians staying at attacked hotel
Posted at 12:02
The Indian government has said 20 Indians were staying in the hotel attacked this morning in Mali's capital, Bamako.

Chinese news service CCTV report 10 were Chinese - that's three more than we previously reported.

This means we know that out of 170 people taken this morning:

30 were hotel staff
20 were Indian
10 were Chinese
6 were Turkish Airlines staff
Guinean singer Sekouba Bambino was also in the hotel
And an unknown number of French citizens

Note: If my maths is still good. It appears to be that most of the guests were French.

Analysis by BBC:

Attacks like the one this morning at a Bamako hotel are usually well co-ordinated with the attackers being aware of the layout of the building as well as the kinds of people present.

The Radisson Blu's international clientele would make it a prime target but that also means the response would involve foreign security forces.

France has had troops in Mali for the past three years helping fight the jihadists and that now involves assisting to quell this attack.

While no group has claimed to be behind the attack, it has come just days after the Iyad Ag Ghaly, the leader of the militant group Ansar Dine, called for attacks on France and its interests in Mali.

His al-Qaeda-linked group has vowed to destabilise the Sahel region.

If they have a memo, as it says in the news, chances are the police will be able to successfully nutralise them.

It was reported that the meeting/planning was being recorded by intelligence services.

A French member on another forum informs me that:

~40-50 members of the GIGIN are heading to Bamako.

BTW, GIGN is the French special force.

French troops now on the scene. For the sake of the hostages they need to just steam in and end crap this asap.

I agree.

There is nothing to negotiate and the longer it goes on the more chance the hostages will be killed anyway .

I am not sure army personnel are trained in Hostage rescue. Thats a completely different ball game and requires special forces specially trained for situations like this.

If the army storms the hotel, this could becoe a blood bath.

With these vermin its going to be a bloodbath anyway.

They are likley counting on stalling. If they storm now they at least might catch them off guard.

What we know about hotel siege:

Details of exactly what has happened at the upmarket Radisson Blu hotel in Mali's capital, Bamako, are still unclear:

Attack began early in the morning with gunmen forcing their way through a security barrier, one witness says
Figures for the number of attackers vary from two to 13
They took 140 guests and 30 hotel staff hostage
Turkish, French, Indian, Chinese and Guinean citizens were staying at the hotel
Eighty hostages have been freed
Those freed include three Turkish Airlines staff, 12 Air France staff and Guinean singer Sekouba Bambino
Malian soldiers stormed the hotel
Mali's president cut short his visit to Chad

Interestingly the attackers have been heard speaking in English, as now being reported on the BBC.

BBC:

'Mali attackers spoke English' says witness

And:

Attackers 'didn't know the layout of hotel'

Interesting, any speculations? IMO, they were not locals.

Well English is a common enough second language.

As for the not knowing layout I am wondering if this is a attack of opportunity put together at the last minute?

Well, as far as I can gather from the internet, English is a language not spoken in Mali. Its like Nigerians(who were a British colony) speaking French.
