This is the FIRST TIME liquid water has been found on the surface of any planet anywhere other than Earth.

That's an exciting discovery. Obviously there almost certainly is liquid water elsewhere, but finding it in two places in the same solar system means the conditions for liquid water is probably really common throughout the universe.

We (my friends and I) were discussing this last night. The most important topic would be the least exciting to most people.

Let's see how a hypothetical point would be looked at;

Potable Water: The most important discovery that could be made since it would mean that water, breathable gas (O2), and usable energy (H2) would make colonizing the planet doable. To the average person this is boring, and means little to nothing.

Remains of an Ancient Society: The least important discovery for colonizing the planet since it provides little value to any expedition to the planet. To the average person this is headline news, oh my god moment, and a major game changer. The reality is that unless we can safely get there to study it (see the Potable Water) it's just an interesting fact and nothing else.


Speculative point;
My opinion is that briny water is confirmed to flow on the planet. Which is still a big deal since we can work with that to colonize the planet, but I'm guessing we'll have to wait till it's announced as to what it is.

For me it is less about colonization and more about finding evidence that the conditions for liquid water could be very common.

Microbial life must either exist, or have existed in the past on Mars. It's so stupid to think it couldn't.
