i'm not being condescending....if i was, i'd just say "sure, whatever you say", and ignore you.

if you want to slink off, and play victim, that's your right, but don't blame me...you're making the choice.

conversely, you could stay, and talk...i wasn't trying to shoot you down, i was honestly and seriously inquiring as to how much of the thread you'd read, before making the post that you did.

For me, this has been a really informative thread. Find a hot-button topic and watch people take up their righteous indignation while remaining totally oblivious of the manipulation being applied, even as they are given the means to see the 'outrage' being manufactured. We've all heard the admonition: "There Are None So Blind As Those Who Will Not See" - seems so.

Might I add...I'd really like to see one of the 'shocked and/or appalled' actually read the book before going all Fahrenheit 451.

it HAS been very telling....quite the example of social engineering, through media manipulation...

it was also VERY interesting how people fixated on the book....most fixating on a single page of it, and a few focusing on the whole thing...but still, fixating on the book, instead of the behavior, and conduct of the man in question. it's like the red herring was more interesting than the actual topic...kinda like your starter being more tasty and satisfying than your main course...

it's been a very strange train wreck to watch, but ultimately, very informative..

Today, the charges against the Dad were dropped...in case anyone was wondering...

www.wmur.com...

In a ruling Thursday, a judge found Baer's actions, "impolite, but not criminal."

a reply to: Realtruth I would hope this Dad would bring a challenge to the school board in court, concerning the school book in question. Tight them up for several months in court. Until they finally remove the book. First amendment rights should always be protected. Since when does a school board have a police officer there? What are they afraid of?

So, the book is about school shootings, and the guy is upset because there is a bit of SEX in the novel?

I mean... the book is about killing people... but he had a problem with the sex.

Not forced sex, mind you, just sex.

Some people need to get their priorities straight, then they need to understand that if they ask to be arrested, the police will do just that. Contrary to popular belief, schools are private property, and once you are no longer welcome, you are trespassing.

I'm glad he wasn't tried for anything. It would be a real shame if he were convicted of trying to be a good parent.

the thread isn't about killing people...

and he wasn't ever in danger of being convicted for being a good parent...could we drop the drama, and stop acting like this rude, loudmouthed jackass is somehow a victim?

How are they private property when they are paid for by the public?

They may have limited access but they are still owned by the public.

If that "public" school wants to be a private one, they can stop receiving MY (read the public's) school taxes.

Contrary to popular belief, schools are public since they receive their money from the public taxes. And once a book is no longer welcome by the public, it should be taken out of curriculum.

Don't be dense........

I haven't read the whole thread, and someone may have said this already...but here goes...

Freedom of speech is a wonderful thing. However, there are situations where there are rules set in advance. And usually this is taking place on private property.

Freedom of speech is the prevalent law of the land. But, if someone objects to your statements or verbiage and you are on their property, they are well within their rights to ask you to leave. Crappy, yes. But, it IS their right to do so, no matter how cowardly and pathetic it is.

About the only way I'd condone this personally is if it was meant to incite an environment that is non-conducive and or disruptive to discussion.

Personally, I really don't care for rules. I'd really rather make my own, and do as I please. However, I was raised to obey them. To respect the idea, that you should have enough common sense to realize that hey, if you are in a situation where their rights essentially supersede your own you have to bow out and redirect your energy elsewhere or at another time.

Like it or not, it's the only rational thing to do in this scenario. Non-compliance is merely a means of "Go directly to Jail, Do not pass Go, Do not collect $200".

It's just how it works. There are always options for appropriate forums.

Forgot to add a personal example.

I was in a movie theater at the premier of Gladiator. To make a long story short, a woman sitting directly behind me had her phone on, it rang, and she decided to answer it right then and there and hold a conversation. As a paying customer, I was highly annoyed, turned around, and asked her politely to take it outside. A few minutes later, I was escorted to the lobby. The woman was there with the manager, who explained that I was being asked to leave the theater and not return. Why? Because the woman said that when I turned around, being a big guy with long arms, I "raised my arm as if to strike her". In reality, I did so simply to turn, crooked my elbow so as NOT to accidentally touch her because the distance was as such that I could have, and by no means made anywhere near a threatening gesture.

I got into a heated exchange with the woman. Not ten seconds after she told me she was a god fearing christian, she said "And I bet you've got a small pr*ck, too!". This was more than enough to make me unconsciously take a step forward, and I was about ready to clock this woman out of shear anger and outrage at her. She felt "protected" because she could do so due to gender and get away with it. Personally, whereas I'd never intentionally strike a woman without provocation, if a woman starts something such as a physical attack I'd respond in like fashion. Yeah, not a popular stance, but that by no means gives a woman the right to strike a man and get away with it. At that point, gloves are off.

Realizing what was about to happen, I regained my composure, and left while the manager was calling the police. I was in the garage at my car long before the po-po showed up.

It was a no win situation. Small woman, 6'3 400lb man. Of COURSE I meant to behave "threateningly" when I asked her to take it outside. Yeah, uh-huh. Right. Couldn't have been the farthest thing from the truth at that time.

Later, it was a different story.

No, this is not the quite the same thing as the OP's story. But, the theater manager was well within his right to ask me to leave, and then to call the police. I did the best thing possible by gaining some degree of composure and leaving before it escalated even further.

Just as the father from the story should have.

P.S. - Yeah, long story, not made short

I guess free speech has a time limit( expiration date.) This experiment has failed because so many in power missed the point, exploited opportunities for their own selfish ends rather than safeguarding it for future generations. The America that exists now IS NOT worth saving. The ideals of America are worth preserving though, unfortunately the current America MUST fall so like the proverbial phoenix the better America can rise from the ashes.
