Talk about accidental armagedon ???? A British nuclear submarine crashed into French nuclear sub while out on patrol. Imagine the crap that would cause if hulls had breached in coastal waters ?

Someone wanna explain how 2 tiny subs crash into each other in an otherwise HUGE freaking ocean??

like a couple grains of sand meeting up in a parking lot ....... less they were looking for each other?

I think thats likely, Submarines are notoriously secretive about their locations & missions and prob came across each other, both knowing the other was around - just not that close

Things are becoming wackier...

Sure as a US Submariner I can explain. We are constantly running drills with other ships. There are many things that may have contributed.Going up to periscope depth is very dangerous as you are almost blind. This is no big surprise at all!

This is just not right!

Submarines don't just crash into each other like that!!

Even crap cars have "parking sensors" of some sort, what makes people believe a sub would not have hundreds?

To anyone believing this story, I have the perfect bridge to sell...

10 out of 10 for the engine room artificers on both vessels
nil points to the sonar operators

British Boomers dont train with French Boomers, only British, American and a few Nato members hunter killers. France vicously protects its nuclear independance from everyone. With both subs being state of the art and both on station probably only using passive sensors the chances do appear to be a case of they simply tried to occupy the same piece of sea at the same time. Still scares the crap out of me though.

the REAL reason we do not train / conduct exercises with the french is because 1 second after the start they yell ` we surrender ` and its ENDEX :p

Yeah just like they did in Vietnam and NE Africa (Somalia), it appears to be a common trait

A "train wreck" would be a better metaphor for what has happened to date in the world's affairs (emphasis on financial). Maybe this accident is more of a harbinger of a more hellish future (accidental nuclear war???). OMG.

For one very good reason, and a likely cause for the incident...

Whilst the SONAR crew were on strike for better pay and conditions, in the bows, the torpedo (or 'baguette' on a French tub) loaders were trialling the launch of a flaming sheep carcass at the British vessel when it misfired, requiring the vessel to perform a 'Crazy Sarkozy' manouver resulting in the collision

Perhaps french submarines like their armored tank counterparts only operate in reverse?

It's possible they could have been practicing a 'strategic retreat maneuver' just in case they ever get invaded again.
