I agree that the primary focus should be on a improving our mental health system but why not a two prong attack? I'm not seeing the harm in preventing individuals with severe mental illness from acquiring any number of items with a potential for use in mass murder, be it firearms or fertilizer.
In order to accomplish that, you'd have to get the ACLU to change it's stance, and a revision of HIPPA. Mental health issues is covered in form 4773, among other things, as a dis qualifier to purchase a gun.

Lying on this form is a felony, but the current administration won't go after offenders.

The true holy grail would be an investigation into the causes of incidents like this, and legislation that targets the findings, without collateral damage. Can craziness like this be stopped? I don't believe so, but the solution isn't going to be restrictions and feel good legislation, like cosmetic features and mag limits.

Brilliant idea in a dark theater with people running and screaming.
Nobody was screaming according to posts on this thread and theaters are usually only dark prior to when the movies starts. Anyway point taken; you are correct. Protecting yourself or attempting to stop the perpetration of a crime is a bad thing to do. Maybe you would call 911?

Another day in Gun Lovin' USA..
If the shooting at sandy hook that left 23 innocent kids dead did not incite change then we should just learn to live and accept that these random shootings are just part of every day life in the USA.
And it's time we start labeling these things as cases of domestic terrorism...how is this different than when an ISIS terrorist blows him self up at a crowded super market?

straw man
Why do people sweep this under the table?
Is it because it IS black on black for the most part?
Or could it be that it's a prime example of how strict gun bans and laws do not work?

IF they wanted to have an 'honest' discussion' they would admit that murder was already illegal.
Thus any more laws are superfluous.
Basically they want something that is already illegal more so. Which doesn't do anything.
Mass Shooting Tracker a crowd-sourced website that monitors gun-related deaths, defines a mass shooting as an incident “when four or more people are shot in an event, or related series of events, likely without a cooling off period.” Not all of these mass shootings resulted in a death.
