Here is what I find kind of funny...er...mabe I should say sad.

Throughout the thread there are those who continually claim how disparaging this can be to the elderly, disabled, parents, and children.

EXCEPT!!!!

It doesn't apply to any of those people.

It only applies to people between the ages of 18 and 49 who are able-bodied (healthy) and do not have dependents (children/elderly/disabled) that they care for.

Also, there are community service programs that people can do from home.

I always found it amazing as well. All the conservatives on here know or have seen people massively scamming the system, and yet they never turn them in. I wish people in these type of threads would just stop with the anecdotal evidence as they always, ALWAYS overly exaggerate the

how do you know that a little bridy has never made a phone call. you have no way of knowing who has done what.
plus you have no idea how many people that you call conservatives, have converted from a liberal view point, or vise a versa.
people change, your not always the same when your older than you were young and dumb and full bright hope and mislead ideas.

Oh gee whiz that’s really going to solve all our problems.

That’s right get all those welfare recipients with Cadillac’s and 40 inch TV’s

It will take 10 million years for the paltry welfare recipients on food stamps to catch up with the 29 trillion welfare for the rich that received in those bail outs

People have been asked on here if they turned them in, they have always said no. And you and I both know who the liberals and who the conservatives are on here. There's even one in this very thread who complained about someone scamming and said they didn't turn them in

Well at least those loans were paid back.

Unlike the personal home loans not paid back post-NAFTA and post-WTO.

Hard to compare two different apples.

And your bottom line solution is __________ ?

I think there are multiple solutions that could work and I'm not enough of an ideologue to adhere to any specific one. Some are from the right side of the aisle while others are from the left.

Before we can fix the problem we need to address why the problem exists in the first place. Many people are getting assistance while working because wages haven't kept up, where things really went off the rails was with the CPI reform of 1980 which recalculated how we figure inflation. This didn't stop inflation from happening, and prices have reflected that but it did change interest rates. It has now been 35 years since this change and the small changes every year have compounded. Because minimum wage increases are coupled to the inflation rate this results in a situation where an inflation rate that's lower than the true change in the cost of goods causes minimum wage to lose purchasing power over time. Thus, the fix here would be a gradual change to the minimum wage such as an increase each year equal to the inflation rate+1% every year for 30 years but this has to be paired with a reform of how CPI is calculated.

That would be one way to fix some of the problem, at least for those who are working. Caring for the unemployed is another issue though. Every year our labor needs decrease as automation improves while our population increase. This means that sooner or later we're probably going to have to move to a basic income system where everyone gets paid for food/shelter and only those who want to work will need to work. Alternatively we can start adjusting the work week, this is actually what I believe is secretly the biggest success in the ACA in that it's turning the work week to a 29 hour week from 40. That spreads the labor between more people and allows everyone to contribute which should lower the unemployment rate, and the market can adjust to peoples reduced income eventually.

Ohh Yeah

NOT ALL PEOPLE On the SNAP Program are on #ing welfare! OP!

Some are working in Wallmart, Home Depot, Grocery Stores, and receiving SNAP !
as those store's dont want to #ing hire anyone full time and get company benefits from
those stores, only the supervisor's and managers get those company benefits .. even people working at most factory's have the same problem !

Tell the Maine Elite Politicians to provide more full time.. Jobs..

Now that individuals have to complete either 20 hours of part-time work a week, volunteer for at least 24 hours per month, or get involved in a vocational program,

Yup ! ! Meanwhile a Baby Sitter is getting paid to watch their kids ! by D.S.S. through the State while they are Working for their SNAP aka Foodstamps .. well... New York State Anyways ..

SNAP recipients has dramatically dropped from 12,000 to approximately 2,500 by the end of March…Impressive, right

Yeah probably because they cant fit it in their work schedule as its a conflict with their Own fricken on the payroll ..JOB clashing with the non profit workfare job .. For the ones that actually work for a living ..

what about Disabled People on SSI SSD ??? Retired! Senior Citizens that get SNAP ??

what their Policy on those in MAINE.. OP!

Pretty sad ! your Source if from as Anti Democratic Stereotypical Red state Republican Slam Site !

so here Ill help you out !

Nice Story from New Hampshire Public Radio

a Catch 22 example of someone that wants to get off the system

"They earn $1,024, they are done with TANF," Hastedt said. "And that is a travesty when you recognize that we are throwing kids into even deeper poverty." That cliff is very real to many recipients.

Theresa Day told the Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee that she received TANF while in college and says she was struggling to get her degree while supporting her daughter.

"I had a job opportunity at that time to work part time that would have helped me significantly, but If I had made just $50 more, I would have lost all of the help I was getting to finish college."

So Does this exclude the one's that do work ., and on a payroll ?
a Tax payer themselves ..

Snap Program ?

Some Middle Class have a hard time making it with Full Time ..

Struggling keeping up with the Joneses ! next door

I seen So Many Struggles of the Ones Trying to make it !

having tough times .. and I seen One's Abuse the System the one's that should loose all benefits
and Ones Tragedy Stricken loosing their home, Sudden Death in the family, loosing a Job, Job Termination,
Ive seen Factory Workers Struggling from layoff's Strikes
coming looking for help and for food of their first 2 weeks .. Ive seen and Helped a Retired military Veteran that refinanced his house , got a new better car .. then Tragic struck, his wife Died and lost half the couples income ..
and waiting help from the military .. as he made too much to get SNAP or any other benefits and had a difficult time paying on medical expenses.. from his late wife .. had life insurance on his wife .. but the insurance had something wrong with it and he was waiting on that .. to cover things .. in which later on it did.. Months later I helped him out with 5 days worth of Food .. and helped pay his light bill.. l he later Helped us

Ive have seen all type's of Struggles from the Low Class Middle Class and even Upper Class like the Retired Veteran

So ask me anything ! a Former Town Neighborhood Center Worker Volunteer in the past 3 years

You know the Ones that are able to Work and have no physical or mental Problems and have NO Children

Yeah Stop their benefits ...

but what about the Ones that have Children ? not all children can get into a foster home..

Here in New York when a Person Refuse to do Workfare or Messes up in the policy of DSS Rules

they Sanctioned their part of the benefits .... Not the children's

The Child Protection Services in Maine will have their Hands Full ! Saving Children from Starvation and extreme poverty.. I guess a the Political Officials didn't think of that outlook ..

Why post if one does not know the whole story?
able bodied people with no dependents between 18-49

I think it is kind of ironic, This law creates a sort of mini socialism. To get the SNAP one just has to do some work, any work will do. Just contribute to society in some way and your equal cut of the pie.

I see people are crying that oh maybe they do not have a car and live in the country, thus they cannot get to a place to volunteer. If this is true how are these people doing anything? They just sit at home all day, everyday? How do they go to the bank, the store, etc etc etc. Either they have a car or someone is helping them with a ride.

Lastly be quiet about corporate welfare and trying to compare apples to rotten oranges, almost no one here is a fan of it. Screaming to the choir.

Ironically Interesting.

How many white people are getting food stamps in Maine?

I bet nobody keeps track.

All Lives Matter !!

Well on the Dept of Social Services Snap Forms they ask for Race Ethnics

and everything you put down is place in the Mainframe Computer headquarters of the State

In New York Anyways ..

Granted I wholly agree with first half of your post regarding fudged inflation numbers keeping CPI down - yes that's an issue for people to understand ramifications enough to devote another thread too IMHO.

Fudged inflation and CPI has major impact top to bottom and is IMHO one of the reasons keeping house of cards temporarily together.

Flipside also one of the reasons holding back a true correction so business can go back to normal and real valuation.

well at first i didn't know till later... as i Researched Down Deeper ... about Maine Anyways ..

but how long will it take to affect Maine ..

People that do have dependents

and New York as we Speak is thinking of that Now !

putting time in for SNAP if you work less then 30 hours

like Community Service ..

and by the Way on the Average You are on Public Assistance with at least 2 dependents ( Your Kids )

lets say you start making ( Round off ) $700 a month for Work Fare ..

In New York its 8.75 an hour ! and let say you have to put in 30 hours a Week

$8.75 hr x 30 = $262.50 x 4 = $1,050 and your making just 700.

that $350.00 they are not paying you .. Right ...

Wrong!! they include that for your part of Food Stamps aka SNAP

in other Words Your 1/3rd

So Apparently you are Working for your Food Stamps while on Public Assistance ..

I had to Call and ask a DSS Case Worker.. when a Client on P.A. asked me about it

as in the paperwork Workfare hours equal minimum wage ..

But a Person on the Books and on the Payroll is exempt from that ..

In New York a Single Person with no Dependents and not Disabled

Have to Wait 45 Days Till they can Receive anything .. and have to go on a Mandatory
One Month Job Training Course .. a Basic clash of Schooling and Home Economics Course besides Job Searching

Hopefully MAINE will Do the Same

Maine Should Read The Rulebooks and policy's of the New York Workfare programs ..,

New York was the Only State where people had to Work for the Benefits of Public Assistance ,,,

Not now MAINE is Doing the Same ..

as I said MAINE as Well As New York Should Get more Jobs in their Counties !

Like More Industrial & Factory manufacture Plants. Not Commercial Stores !

Both States Have the Land to Do it !

Will we see it? Probably Not, Major Company's Like China Too Much for the Labor ..

the wealthy want as many people as possible in poverty.....jesus, this has been going on for a while now.....just look at the income disparity, and where 80% of all income has gone to in the last 40 odd years.....they want to cut benefits, cut your wages, cut your hours, they want to do away with social security and make it a 401k program, they want to take away Medicare and Medicaid, or at the least, reduce both drastically...and....the wealthy still want MORE TAX BREAKS!!!...are you kidding me?...and the republicans here on ATS think that's just fine, why do I say that, because they support republican politicians that want to do all of this.

where are the republicans on ATS that would consider cutting the interest on federal student loans. it was 4%...now it's 8%
where are the republicans on ATS that would add billions to our highway and bridge, so we don't have people dying from collapses. maybe if a republican congressmen's children died from a collapse, that would be the only way.

On the flip side, the left wants as many people as possible in poverty. Thats why the minimum wage keeps getting increased....to drive that poverty line higher and higher, turning more and more middle class families into "poor".

There's no shortage of social engineering on both sides of the aisle. But, like you point out, its the wealthy that likely have the most to gain from a serfdom. And there are plenty of wealthy on both sides of the aisle.

You mean past the point of limited government? Of course we are and have been since the New Deal, only now it's morphing into unmanageable to the point of collapse(how convenient for Cloward and Piven).

I would assume the person that wrote this article doesn't know that there are more whites on food stamps than blacks. Not to mention Maine is almost 97% white.
So now people that cannot afford food has to try and figure out a way to pay for a sitter with a job they aren't going to get paid for that makes a lot of sense. Also volunteer for what are they now free slaves for companies to use or will they be working for the state?

I would assume you do know a black person is twice as likely to have received these benefits.

Maybe another welfare recipient could volunteer to be a caregiver for a day.

It would be nice if there could be an organized effort to actually organize programs to help this succeed. People could gain some skills and work ethic in the interim, and a community of people would be helping each other get vocational training by volunteering to assist each other in some way needed...."I'll care for your children on Tues. and Thurs. while you take classes and you take care of mine on Mon. and Wed. while I work my hours."
yeah, maybe you should start one. It only takes one person to get the ball rolling.

It's the same thing. White people are the largest demographic, so they have more people than anyone else, but blacks have a much higher percentage of people in the program.

Every single black person in Maine could be on SNAP and there would still be "more white people".
