Speaker John Boehner is so against raising the minimum wage that he once said he would rather commit suicide than vote for a “clean” increase.

The Ohio Republican and son of a barkeep has repeatedly opposed federally mandated hike increases, which have been a constant in the Democrats’ election-year playbook.

Boehner has “always believed that it's a job killer,” former Ohio Rep. Steve LaTourette, a labor-friendly Republican who is close to Boehner, told The Hill. He pointed to the Congressional Budget Office’s recent report that found that increasing the minimum wage could cost the economy 500,000 jobs.

thehill.com...

Beohner as long as you have been in Washington. You should know better to make comments like that.

Articulate the reasoning behind it like :

Minimum wage increase the biggest beneficiary is the US government who gets more 'tax money'. Then between the increased percentages of payroll taxes that employee's, and employers will end up paying. Compound that with food inflation, and the devaluation of the dollar which means any wage increase is meaningless.

The people that it is suppose to benefit don't see a penny of it, but you do.

Wage increases kill economic output, and they do put people out of work. Since small business is the largest employer in this country whose margins are already minuscule. The wage increase is putting a bandaid on a perceived problem that doesn't address the root cause.

That is what Boehner should be saying.

LOL its awesome how politicians have somehow convinced people that pay rises are a bad thing, yet at the same time keep awarding themselves more money haha. Doublespeak at its finest.

Are you advocating for everyone to take a pay cut to boost the economy?

Did I say that ?

If the proponents of 'wage increases' wanted to help people, and the economy they would cut taxes.

More money for employers, and employees.

Instead of taking more money from employers who are already paying out their butts for their employees.

Like unemployment insurance, workmans comp, and half of their employees social security, and medicare on top of everything else it takes to keep their doors open.

I think something has to be done, drastically to bring living costs back to the pay rates, I know that many businesses, many many, are struggling under the load of taxes and wages at the amount that they are currently and yes many will collapse if wages are simply raised to try and meet cost of living.

The amount of taxes and wages and wage related taxes are something the average person know little about. The fact that they changed the way taxes are paid has nearly bankrupt our family business in Oregon, they changed it so you pay BEFORE you earn, so quarterly payments are made on future earnings and there are huge late fees!

In todays world thinking that income is in any way steady and paying on predictable earnings is ridiculous, plus the fact it is totally unconstitutional charging one something you don't even have yet!

Instead of printing trillions of dollars to give to bank CEOs for bonuses the government should have subsidised small business pay increases instead.

But I dont know how Americans would feel about that, they probably consider that some sort of communism lol.

Yeah..makes perfect sense. Why raise the minimum wage...especially when the cost of living is skyrocketing....that would help nobody....just the government. After all....it's not like your taxes are increasing to try and pay for all the food stamp programs, housing benefits, welfare ect. that these people need because they can't make a living wage. Who cares that because of inflation, the pittance that they do make doesn't go as far as it used to?

Read that back to yourself and ask if there is any logic in that.

Higher wages means a wider Tax base coupled with less Tax revenue spent on Food Stamps etc. Which of course leads to lowering that deficit that you keep complaining about.

The bottom line line is.....

If the Consumer can not Consume, Businesses can not do Business.

The Consumer needs money in its pocket.

The US Government runs a defecit of more than a TRILLION dollars every year. With less tax revenue, how does the government keep this little charade going? You can't keep borrowing forever. Sooner or later...the bill comes due.

I completely disagree with your assesment. If people have more money....they will spend more money. This will drive the economy and create demand, which creates jobs. If nobody has any money then it's just a matter of time before small businesses go under.

Whose taxes ?

Not those who make 'minimum wage' since that is not talking about the middle class there. That is talking about people who bag groceries, flip burgers.pushes brooms.

In other words unskilled labor.

www.huffingtonpost.com...

money.cnn.com...

And it is that income tax that pays for those.

But hey guess it just sucks being one of the 500k people who get the shaft so the 'majority' can enjoy their downward mobility.

Minimum wage jobs were never meant to be careers.

I think the living wage is bullsnip. In fact it is a slightly hipper rap of corporate fascism.

People need to be paid more so they can go out, and buy more corporate products!

Just ask JP Morgan the food stamper billionaires.

BS that fuzzy math at work.

Hey lets ask them 100 million people who don't even work anymore.

www.zerohedge.com...

The bottom line is people can't consume because of asinine 'living wage' crap.

Oh and lookie there 100 million people who aren't because they don't have no job, just like those 500k who are going to lose their jobs.

I wonder how John "Lynch Mob" Boner would commit suicide? Maye drinking a gallon of copper tan? Empty promisses just like Rush "Oxycotin" Limpballs moving to Costa Rica. A man can dream right. RepubliCONs hold the unemployed and the underpaid in contempt for not working and being wealthy. They ignore that hundreds show up to apply for ten jobs. They resent paying taxes that subsidize the poor, yet they refuse to pay workers a wage that could reduce dependence on subsidies.

Things like gas tax, sales tax, alcohol tax, tobacco taxes.

The Us government has no shortage of taxation.

If democrats really cared about getting people jobs they wouldn't be killing the economy with taxes, regulations, and BS about global warming/climate change. You think people are hurting now? Wait til Obama's EPA regulations kick in, electricity prices are going to skyrocket. Dem-Comms don't want to create jobs, they want people to become dependent on the state, which will give them their permanent peasant army.

If someone (Government) actually cared about the lower wages some have to work for, all they would have to do is say anyone making less than $10 an hour (regardless of how many hours they work) pays no federal/state taxes.. They are not gonna do that... Just like low mileage cars provide more tax revenue via gas taxes and the miles per gallon destroying ethanol added. Much of this stuff is total B.S. and people buy the crap without looking at how much in taxes that come out of their pay check. Mandate higher minimum wage helps the government bottom line much more than it will ever help the wage earners, IMO.

You do realize where those tax dollars come from? Corporations pay practically no taxes as it is so you can't cut much there. Give the people a tax break and that short fall in revenue will mean deep cuts in social programs.

Things like gas tax, sales tax, alcohol tax, tobacco taxes.

They tax all those things right now....and you are still running over trillion dollar defecits. Are you suggesting they should raise taxes on those items? Why not jack taxes on luxury yachts and Lamborghinis...tax the life out of luxury items I say.

If people have more money eh ?

Yes....as in a raise in the minimum wage. If people have more money, they will spend more money.
