He went on to say that all the new technology that has been created has greatly reduced the amount of time it takes to make these type of films. "The first ['Avatar'] took almost four years to make," said the director. "We expect to be able to accelerate the process quite a bit, because we've improved a lot of the software and the computer graphics tools, and we've been working very closely with Weta Digital down here in New Zealand developing a whole new suite of tools to speed up the process."

"Avatar 2"is set to hit theaters in December of 2016. "Avatar 3" will then be released in December of 2017, and "Avatar" 4 will follow a year later.

My partner and I saw the first. One, after someone at the LA County Fair insisted we see it. Frankly it was just OK. I am in no hurry for the next installment. People acted like real D was new. I saw a couple of movies in great 3 D long before Avatar, and one was by James Cameron about the Titanic...I think it was called Ghost of the Abyss... anyway Yawn on this news.

I love me some Avatar too. I am glad to see an update, as I was just wondering not long ago... how long it would be until we saw another one or if he had perhaps given up on the idea all together.

Now we can all do a happy dance!

I can't wait! The first was beautifully done. I'm still shocked The Hurt Locker beat it out at the Oscars.

The first two LOTRs didn't win anything. Leonardo hasn't received an Oscar yet.

They can't be trusted!

The first one was really great. It'll be hard to recapture that level of being 'awestruck' and all ...
Sometimes sequels are a bad thing. Disappointing. I hope he can keep the level up ..

I may watch the sequels.

The first was simply "Dances With Wolves" gone sci-fi.

Looks like I'll have plenty of time to wait. . . .

You make that sound like that's a bad thing. You just combined two awesome things lol

I thought the "Pocahontas" analogy was spot on.

Avatar was OK and entertaining and I'll probably watch the sequel DVDs when they come out. I'm cheap and the damn theaters are too expensive these days.

But that is all I ask of Hollywood. Entertain me. If can do that, then they have succeeded.

That is is why i am worried about the sequel.

When the original is too good, and from my experience, a sequel to that will always suck.

Ex. Matrix.

Kind of makes me wonder how close to the truth Avatar can or will be considering that they are planning on making so many more so far ahead. I liked the first one and will see the rest.

About as imaginative as Dances With Wolves, considering the story is the same between the two.

Wonder if the sequel will show what happened about two months later. You know, the military eliminating the big smurfs.

I have to agree with the other poster and say that Avatar was basically Dances with Wolves in space. It wasn't particularly original.

As for the sequels, let's not forget that James Cameron directed arguably two of the greatest sequels of all time, Terminator 2 and Aliens.

UUgh...... get it away from me and kill it with fire! Another ENviromental message movie wrapped up in pretty colors and CG graphics. UNles cameron brings a realistic response to the marines defeat in the first one i do not see sequels making sense. The marines should roll back in after nuking them from orbit(its the only way to be sure. Thanks hicks) If it was me in charge of a counter attack id scorch the entire planet first. the survivors would be relocated to government controlled reservations. enevtually in hundreds of year they will become prosperous and get back at the humans by taking our money in casinos.

Do you think the space smurfs will also have smokes for the 'lowest prices allowable by law'?
