Punk rock/Metal legends "Bad Brains" wrote this song which delves into many things discussed on this forum.

Lyrics:

Did you ever question any of the things
They thought while you were at school?
And did you ever question, "Oh my teacher
Why do you take me for a fool?"

Rise up, you got to rise up, wake up and rise
When you're all alone
You'll search for love but they'll have none

This is the seed that they have sown
Don't be afraid, a better place has yet to come
And when they won't teach or reach or feed
And all they do is leave you deceive you

Be true to yourself and save your mind, lesson for the young
So now let's fly away into the light of a brand new sun

The time has come, rise up, you gotta rise up, wake up and rise
We'll meditate, communicate, escalate, don't be late
We just can't wait to liberate this human race

Go, rise up, you gotta rise up, wake up and rise
Don't let them take away your culture
Don't let them take away your future, rise up, you got to rise

What the # happened to popular music? Notice that all these songs are OLD to VERY old. Now it's devolved to "music" to twerk to and other mundane drivel, or very dominantly so.

What happened was a few things.

1) Record companies no longer employ true A & R people. No more filters. That's both a good and bad thing.

2) Music was democratized in the 1980s-1990s. Anyone with a decent budget could record an album so there was simply more noise along with quality stuff. Its now up to the listener to find what they like.

3) The rise of the internet, Youtube, Facebook, Soundcloud etc means that bands and artists are often promoted based on how many followers/likes they have.

4) A lot of the stuff that was posted in this thread was Progressive Rock (Prog Rock). Well Prog Rock became Progressive Metal and a lot of these artists have carried on the UFOs, Aliens, Space themes. I posted some of them.

5) People get old and popular music taste is determined by the young. One generation's music is typically an older one's "noise". If you're just going by what you hear on the radio, why are you still listening to radio?

In summary, music is as good as ever, there is just more of it. You can find what YOU like if you know what you're looking for and where to look.

Stuff like Pandora, Last FM, etc help with that by the way, they look for other stuff similar to stuff you already like. So you might want to check into them.

Lyrics:

I must've died and gone to heaven
Cos it was a quarter past eleven
On a Saturday in 1999
Right across from where I'm standing
On the dance floor she was landing
It was clear that she was from another time
Like some baby Barbarella
With the stars as her umbrella
She asked me if I'd like to magnetise
Do I have to go star-trekking
Cos it's you I should be checking
So she lazer beamed me with her cosmic eyes

She's just a cosmic girl
From another galaxy
My heart's at zero gravity
She's from a cosmic world
Putting me in ecstasy
Transmitting on my frequency
She's cosmic

I'm scanning all my radars
We'll she said she's from a quasar
Forty thousand million light years away
It's a distant solar system
I tried to phone but they don't list 'em
So I asked her for a number all the same
She said, step in my transporter
So I can teleport ya
All around my heavenly body
This could be a close encounter
I should take care not to flounder
Sends me into hyperspace, when I see her pretty face

She's just a cosmic girl
From another galaxy
My heart's at zero gravity
She's from a cosmic world
Putting me in ecstasy
Transmitting on my frequency
She's cosmic
Sends me into hyperspace when I see her pretty face
Sends me into hyperspace when I see her pretty face...

She's just a cosmic girl
From another galaxy
Transmitting on my frequency yeah cosmic, oh
Can't you be my cosmic woman?
I need you, I want you to be my cosmic girl
For the rest of time

Jamiroquai has other songs that touch on similar subjects:

As you can see, Psychedelia did not end in the 1970s....

This is the return
Of the space cowboy
Inter-planetary
Good vibe zone
At the speed of Cheeba
We'll go deeper
Maybe I'll have to get high
Just to get by.

Everything is good
And green
Oh, I'm red again
And I don't suppose I'm coming down
I can see clearly now,
High in the sky
A man with psychedelic picture frames
Of happiness to shade
His eyes
He's glad
That the found
Somebody who
He can rely on.

And their big hit:

This song was big in the 90s dance music scene and samples the Rendlesham Forrest tape.

Within Temptation is the internationally known symphonic rock band, founded in the Netherlands in 1996 by vocalist Sharon den Adel and guitarist Robert Westerholt. The band members are interested in all things science-fiction and space-related, and have been following the PromISSe mission of ESA astronaut André Kuipers.

When they heard that three of their songs ("Faster", "Mother Earth" and "The Promise") had been included in André's playlist to be played in space, the band were very excited to support his mission. They helped us to produce this video, recording a special message and dedicating their song "Faster" to André, wishing him a high-speed but safe return later this week.

Within Temptation are Sharon den Adel, Robert Westerholt, Stefan Helleblad, Jeroen van Veen, Ruud Jolie, Martijn Spierenburg and Mike Coolen.

I'm waking up to ash and dust
I wipe my brow and I sweat my rust
I'm breathing in the chemicals
I'm breaking in, shaping up, then checking out on the prison bus
This is it, the apocalypse
Whoa

I'm waking up, I feel it in my bones
Enough to make my systems blow
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Whoa, whoa, I'm radioactive, radioactive
Whoa, whoa, I'm radioactive, radioactive

I raise my flags, dye my clothes
It's a revolution, I suppose
We'll paint it red to fit right in
Whoa
I'm breaking in, shaping up, then checking out on the prison bus
This is it, the apocalypse
Whoa

I'm waking up, I feel it in my bones
Enough to make my systems blow
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Whoa, whoa, I'm radioactive, radioactive
Whoa, whoa, I'm radioactive, radioactive

All systems go, sun hasn't died
Deep in my bones, straight from inside

I'm waking up, I feel it in my bones
Enough to make my systems blow
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Whoa, whoa, I'm radioactive, radioactive
Whoa, whoa, I'm radioactive, radioactive

Janelle Monáe is a current pop artist whose music, look and everything are inspired by sci-fi in much the same way David Bowie's was in the 70s-80s. As a result she gets compared to Bowie a lot for her aesthetic.

Janelle Monáe: 'I'm a time traveller. I have been to lots of different places'
She's an android-dating style queen who's been compared to Bowie. Is the R&B singer the saviour of pop?

The last time Janelle Monáe did interviews she generally spoke "in character", from behind sunglasses, and predicted an alien takeover. Today I'm to accompany her to David Bowie is… at the V&A. It's a sign of Monáe's otherness that the closest comparison people could find for her, back in 2010, was one of pop's more astral figures. Like Bowie, Monáe set herself up as a time traveller, with a concept album (The ArchAndroid) and an ever-evolving alter ego (Cindi Mayweather – an alien sent from the future to save mankind in a Fritz Lang-inspired protest movement).

I'm an alien from outer space (outer space)
I'm a cybergirl without a face a heart or a mind
(a product of the man, I'm a product of the man)
Ci ci ci
I'm a Slave Girl without a Race (without of Race)
On the run cause they? hit our ways and chase my kind
They've come to destroy me

And I think to myself
Impossibly (Wait! Its impossible)
They're Gunning for me!
(That they're Gunning For me)
And now the Army's After you
(and now they're After you)

And all the sirens go dooodooo
The sirens go dooodoooodooo
Dooodooooo
Oh baby uh you know the rules
I love you and I won't take no?

They say that Violet Stars will Set you Free (Set you Free)
When your Running Lost and Alone,
(Follow them Down)Up Neon Valley Street
(Up Neon Valley Street)
A pretty day makes a pretty picture
But fall in love and they're coming to get ya
Who knew 10 men with guns were at the door
The DROID CONTROL! (The Droid Control)

Impossibly (Wait! Its impossible)
They're Gunning for me!
(That they're Gunning For me and now there after you)
And now the Army's After you
for Loving too!
(baby I hear the Sirens go Do Doo)

Baby, I hear the sirens go dooodooo
Sirens go dooodoooo

Come on Baby 'cause here they're coming now (You know the rules)

Impossibly, there Gunning for Me!
And now The Army's after you! For Loving Too.
Baby, I hear the sirens go dooodooo
Sirens go dooodoooo
Doooodoooodooooo (I said uh baby)
You know the rules

View a sky without any blue.
Breakfast on incandescent, built to chew.
Dream to find another world
Where a cyborg can love and a cyber girl is still a queen.

[Chorus]
Where there's no law,
Tying my heart from the start.
Where there's no war, if my dreams run a little wild,
But if there's no call from joy control
Warning me against this disease in my heart.
Freein' my soul.

Population 10 zillion and six
Where signs say, "Welcome to the Star Core Metropolis."
Me, I live on the wired side of town,
Reaching and searching for a space called paradise found.

[Chorus]
Where there's no law
Tying my heart from the start.
Where there's no war, if my dreams run a little wild,
But if there's no call from joy control
Warning me against this disease in my heart.
Freein' my soul.

And it's a common thought
that wired folk can be sold and bought.
That we have no feelings no memories or minds,
That we're bionic strumpets only worth a dime.
To some it's a surprise when I smile.
And when I hold your hand, they say,
"How can a wired thing understand?
Love is too deep; it's too wide to feel
when your soul is a button
and your foot glows in heels."
Program. Program. Reprogram.
One nation, under a microchip.
Neon slaves, electric savages,
open your hearts. Open your eyes. Your chariot will arrive.

Hey, Anthony Greendown from sector nine. (From sector nine)
With beautiful eyes
I've served you now about thirty-eight times.
Thirty-eight times I've looked in those eyes.
You see me laughing, the love when I hold your hand,
I wanna take you, take you with me to another land.

[Chorus]
Where there's no law
Tying my heart from the start.
Where there's no war, if my dreams run a little wild,
But if there's no call from joy control.
No call.
Please go with me.
Oh come with me.
I need you.
Let's leave. Let's leave.
Come. Come. Come.

Once I hoped
To seek the new and unknown
This planet's overrun
There's nothing left for you or for me
Don't give in, we can
Walk through the fields
And feeling nature's glow
But all the land is owned
There's none left for you or for me

Who will win?
'Cause I concede

Free me
Free me
Free me from this world
I don't belong here
It was a mistake imprisoning my soul
Can you free me
Free me from this world

A world lush in bloom
With rivers running wild
They'll be re-routed South
With none left for you or for me
Don't give in
Hear the engines roar
And save our crops from drought
But when the black gold's in doubt
There's none left for you or for me

Fuse helium-3
Our last hope

Free me
Free me
Free me from this world
We don't belong here
It was a mistake imprisoning our souls
Can you free me
Free me from this world

Free me
I'll free you
Free us from this world
We don't belong here
It was a mistake imprisoning our souls
Can you free me
Free me from this world

Running around in circles feeling caged
By endless rules
Can you free me, free me from this world

Go to sleep

You have to love Iron Maiden they have constantly revisited the subject through the years and all of their albums feature an alien on the cover! The lyrics are poetic and their singer is probably the best metal singer ever.

The only place where you can dream, living here is not what it seems.
Ship of white light in the sky, nobody there to reason why.
Here I am, I'm not really there, smiling faces ever so rare.
A let's walk in deepest space, living here just isn't the place.

Stalks of light come from the ground, when I cry there isn't a sound.
All my feelings cannot be held, I'm happy in my new strange world.
Shades of green grasses twine, girls drinking plasma wine.
A look at love, a dream unfolds, living here, you'll never grow old.

Don't you hear me call? Ooh

This song just sounds otherworldly. The opening riff sounds like it came from another world. I like a lot of this old music.

If you had the time to lose
An open mind and time to choose
Would you care to take a look
Or can you read me like a book

Time is always on my side
Time is always on my side

Can I tempt you come with me
Be Devil may care fulfill your dream
If I said I'd take you there
Would you go would you be scared

Time is always on my side
Time is always on my side

Don't be afraid you're safe with me
Safe as any soul can be... honestly
Just let yourself go

[Chorus:]
Caught somewhere in time
Caught somewhere in time
Caught somewhere in time... oh oh
Caught somewhere in time
Caught somewhere in time
Caught somewhere in time... oh oh

Like a wolf in sheep's clothing
You try to hide your deepest sins
Of all the things that you've done wrong
And I know where you belong

Time is always on my side
Time is always on my side

Make you an offer you can't refuse
You've only got your soul to lose...
Eternally... let yourself go!

[Chorus:]
Caught somewhere in time
Caught somewhere in time
Caught somewhere in time... oh oh
Caught somewhere in time
Caught somewhere in time
Caught now in two minds!

Was many years ago that I left home and came this way
I was a young man, full of hope and dreams
But now it seems to me that all is lost and
nothing gained
Sometimes things ain't what they seem
No brave new world, no brave new world
No brave new world, no brave new world

Night and day I scan horizon, sea and sky
My spirit wanders endlessly
Until the day will dawn and friends from home
discover why
Hear me calling, rescue me
Set me free, set me free
Lost in this place, and leave no trace

[Chorus:]
Stranger in a strange land
Land of ice and snow
Trapped inside this prison
Lost and far from home

One hundred years have gone and men again
they came that way
To find the answer to the mystery
They found his body lying where it fell all that day
Preserved in time for all to see
No brave new world, no brave new world
Lost in this place, and leave no trace

What became of the man that started
All are gone and their souls departed
Left me here in this place
So all alone

[Chorus:]

What became of the man that started
All are gone and their souls departed
Left me here in this place
So all alone

[Chorus:]

I'm running of my time, I'm running out of breath
And now it's getting, so I can't sleep at night
in the day, I feel like death

I'm getting in far too deep, I feel they closing in
I've got to say that I'm scared, I know they'll win
Even so, I prepared

[Chorus:]
Do you believe, what you hear
Can you believe, what you see
Do you believe, what you feel
Can you believe

What is real?
Futureal
What is real?
Futureal

Wherever anyone seems to treat me like a freak
It makes me see I'm only one who feels
That I know what is real

Sometimes it feels like a game of deadly hide and seek
And when you reading this, then I will be gone
Maybe then, you will see

[Chorus 2 times]

My telescope looks out
Into the stars tonight
A little speck of light
Seems twice the size tonight
The calculations are so fine
Can it be growing all the time?

Now I can't believe it's true
And I don't know what to do
For the hundredth time
I check the declination

Now the fear starts to grow
Even my computer shows
There are no errors in the calculations

Now it's happened take no other view
Collision course, you must believe it's true
Now there's nothing left that we can do

When Two Worlds collide
The anger and the pain
Of all those who remain
Two Worlds collide
Who will be left alive
No place to hide

When Two Worlds collide
The anger, the pain
Of those who remain
When Two Worlds collide
So who will survive
There's no place to hide
When two worlds collide

Now it's happened take no other view
Collision course, you must believe it's true
Now there's nothing left that we can do

When Two Worlds collide
The anger, the pain
Of all those who remain
Two Worlds collide
Who will be left alive
No place to hide
There's no place to hide
When Two Worlds collide

On July 3, 2009, The Jefferson Starship and some musical friends performed an out-of-this-world, science fiction-themed concert during the annual Roswell UFO Parade & Festival in Roswell, New Mexico. The band also was honored as the event’s “Grand Martians” and got to ride on a specially designed float during the extravaganza.

Now, the entire concert is available as a four-CD set titled Tales from the Mothership, which also includes bonus recordings from the rehearsals and the soundcheck for the event. The collection features classics from the catalog of The Jefferson Starship’s predecessor group, The Jefferson Airplane, including “White Rabbit,” “Somebody to Love,” “Volunteers” and “Crown of Creation.” The package also boast The Starship’s renditions of a selection of space-themed rock songs prepared just for the show, such as David Bowie‘s “Space Oddity,” Pink Floyd‘s “Brain Damage” and The Grateful Dead‘s “Dark Star.”

In addition, the soundcheck audio boasts a medley by current lead singer Cathy Richardson that includes Joni Mitchell‘s “Woodstock,” The Beatles‘ “Oh Darlin’” and The Buffalo Springfield‘s “For What It’s Worth.”

Among the special guests featured on the album are ex-Grateful Dead keyboardist Tom Constanten, veteran folk singer Jack Traylor and Starship alumni Pete Sears and Darby Gould.

I know I mentioned Kelis earlier but I found what is perhaps her most explicit UFO themed song. I don't know why I forgot this one. It talks about UFOs, government cover ups etc.
