Netflix Gems

Good film. just watched it well worth watching.

I watched The Man From Earth last night. I thought it was great! I too wished I had written it myself. Some of the characters/acting was a little cheesy but I loved the premise.

I'll list a handful of gems I have found.

Melencholia -It is slow, but I found myself drug into the storyline. It is about a woman who has depression and her sister who tries to care for her as well as her own family. All the while, a planet is coming towards Earth called Melencholia that is supposed to nearly swipe the planet. That was mainly what kept me watching. What is going to happen with the planet? It isn't the best movie, but I enjoyed the last 40 minutes a lot.

The Fields - Based on a true account experienced by the writer of the movie. It is marked as thriller and that is what it is. No blood or guts, just real life creepy. It takes place in the 1970's. A little boy goes to stay with his grandparents and they are terrorized by a group of hippies living in their corn field. Cloris Leachman plays the grandmother and she was great. Don't be swayed by the fact Tara Reid is in the movie, she isn't in it a whole lot.

The New Daughter - A man and his daughter move to a new house where they find a old burial mound in the woods. I loved this one. Very good, and a lot of creepy moments. Kevin Costner plays the dad.


My recently viewed isn't going back far enough and I can't remember much more. I do like to watch the Twilight Zone fairly often. Insidious is pretty good if you like horror and haven't seen it yet.

Just as an aside about 'Man From Earth'; reportedly it was filmed on a very low budget in just a week or two (and it shows). I can easily see it being done as a stage play rather than on film.

Jerome Bixby, the writer, also wrote 'Requiem for Methuselah', the Star Trek episode (original series) where they go to a planet inhabited by an immortal who was Brahms, Galileo, etc, on earth). Man From Earth would appear to be another take on the same idea.

Fascinating watching the mind of a great science fiction writer wrestle with the idea of immortality while he's on his death bed...

I can also recommend West Wing, the entire series is on Amazon (first month free) and may be on Netflix now, it comes and goes; also the current TV series White Collar is very well done. Like a cross between James Bond and the Bourne Identity without the constant violence and shoot-em ups. The first season is on Netflix and the rest is on Couchtuner. For you ladies out there, the lead character must have the most gorgeous face in history.

Thanks for starting this thread; I also killed my cable long ago but I worked nights for years and with a short budget and little kids, I missed whole decades of movies. It's been fun catching up now that I'm 'retired' aka not working....

What's in your Netflix queue for the weekend..?

Well Netflix added a lot of new movies yesterday. Well over 400 new movies. Here is a list if you want to scan through them.

I have never heard of many of them so I'm not sure how they are. Some that caught my eye:

Echelon 8 - Max Peterson's problems begin when he gets a new cell phone while on assignment in Bangkok. When he starts getting anonymous text messages on it that seem to predict the future, he uses it to his advantage.

Ghost From the Machine - Wildly grief-stricken over the accidental death of his parents, young techno geek Cody cobbles together an electrical device that he hopes will bring the spirits of mother and father back from beyond the grave.

Half Light - After the accidental drowning death of her young son, grieving mom Rachel Carson, a successful novelist, heads to a remote cottage for a much-needed retreat, only to get caught up in a murder mystery. Starring Demi Moore.

Hell's Gate 11:11 - Eighteen years ago, Sara's parents were brutally murdered and the numbers 11:11 were written in blood next to their bodies. Now, a series of supernatural events begin occurring in her college town and the mysterious numbers seem to appear everywhere

In Her Defense - When Jane's abusive husband walks in on her during a passionate moment with her lover, attorney Andrew, the ensuing struggle ends with the husband dead, killed by Andrew. Now, he must defend Jane in court -- while avoiding implicating himself.

Killer's Moon - After killing a game warden and mutilating a dog, four escaped mental patients encounter a broken-down bus in the country. The vehicle's stranded schoolgirls search for a place to spend the night, unaware that the psychopaths are right behind them. (This one probably sucks but I love me some 70's horror)

The Little Kidnappers - Pining for the love they aren't getting from their gruff grandfather, two orphaned brothers kidnap a baby and try to raise it on their own. But the infant's disappearance has unexpected consequences for everyone involved. Charlton Heston stars.

Shallow Ground - Beset with guilt for failing to prevent a serial killer's latest homicide, small-town sheriff Jack Sheppard may get a chance at redemption when a nude, blood-drenched teen boy turns up at the station clutching a big knife.

I could continue but I don't want to make too large of a post. I have only looked through about 100 so far. Some old favorites have been added as well, like Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Happy Gilmore.

So, we watched "The Man From Earth" over the weekend. Everyone who was watching with me actually stopped talking and payed attention (small miracle in my house). I don't want to give too much away, but it was a great glimpse into how people hang on tight, to whatever keeps their world tangible and understandable. I plan on watching it again. Once you see it all the way through once, it can become a slightly different movie, the second time. That's all I'm willing to say.

I've watched both versions of Battlestar Galactica on Netflix, the first few seasons of fringe, x files, and the new version of V on there as well

Zenith is a must watch. Excellent conspiracy movie. I'd focus on what they are trying to say, not the story itself.

Took a look at the reviews over on Netflix, It's It one of those movies that rates 1 out of 5 stars, or FIVE out of 5 stars. That usually means it's controversial. Which in turn means I've tossed it in my queue and will watch and report back. Thanks a lot for posting it in the Netflix thread. We streamers have to stick together!

The Battle of Britain.

The cast is full of stars, however, there is not a lot of acting going on.
The film is about the battle, the strategies of Germany and Britain.
There are glimpses of both sides, giving us an idea of how Britain coped with overwhelming odds.
Very stoic, they were, in their reaction to waves of German bombers and fighters, popping over the channel, seeming at-will. But there were holes in the German approach. This movie shows the flaws in Germany's plan, and how they were exploited. Watch it for the dogfights, and other aerial battles. It's a classic!

I consider myself a connoisseur of movies that are so bad they're good. Right now on Netflix you can watch one of the best bad movies I've ever seen: A Talking Cat!?! (The punctuation is their's not mine).

It's directed by a gay porn/schlock director under a pseudonym, it uses sets from softcore movies, it uses at least one former softcore actress. And if I didn't tell you any of that, you'd be able to assume most of it within the first five minutes. It features Eric Roberts as the voice of the cat and he did all his recording over a telephone. The plot is insane in its banality, low-stakes and how unfun it would be for kids.

It's amazing. At least jump about 1 minute ahead in the trailer to see the animation for the cat talking:

On Netflix in the UK I have found some proper gems - stuff you are unlikely to find anywhere else.

- Archer (so utterly offensive but brilliant)

- Mythbusters (for the little boy in all of us)

Cool Movies
- Primer (time travel)
- 9
- War of the Worlds (original movie adaptation)
- Invaders from Mars (really old SciFi)
- King of Kong (documentary about people who play arcade machines and take it too seriously)
