CANBERRA, Jan 14 (Bernama) -- Australians now own as many firearms as they did at the time of the Port Arthur shootings in 1996, China's Xinhua news agency reported quoting new study by the University of Sydney revealed recently.
More than one million guns were destroyed in the aftermath of the Port Arthur massacre, but the research by Professor Philip Alpers, from the Sydney University school of public health, said Australians have steadily restocked and the number of firearms in the community now totals around 3.2 million.
In the Port Arthur massacre in Tasmania in 1996, a deranged gunman shot dead 35 people and wounded another 23. Then Prime Minister John Howard pushed through stringent national controls, banning semi-automatic rifles and pump-action shotguns and introducing more stringent licensing. In the guns buyback, Australians surrendered more than 700,000 firearms.
"What our research found was that a huge number of people gave in their guns for no compensation at all," he said. "These hadn't been added into the discussions. So a million guns were taken out of circulation and put into the smelter."
From: Ed Chenel, A police officer in Australia Hi Yanks, I thought you all would like to see the real figures from Down Under. It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in: Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent, Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent; Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)! In the state of Victoria..... lone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent.(Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not and criminals still possess their guns!) While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since the criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed. There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins andassaults of the elderly, while the resident is at home. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in 'successfully ridding Australian society of guns....' You won't see this on the American evening news or hear your governor or members of the State Assembly disseminating this information. The Australian experience speaks for itself. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens. Take note Americans, before it's too late! Will you be one of the sheep to turn yours in? WHY? You will need it.

Now, there are "rules" here in America, please learn our laws, or refrain from talking about them.
America reminds you of Somalia, but Australia reminds me of another slave country.
Now with opinions aside you if have real facts to post that will help your opinion please do, but please refrain from having an opinion on things you know nothing about. Would I give an opinion on a Mars probe design? No, that would be silly because I know nothing about it.

Im not sure I undrstand what you are trying to say. Cant tell if you are American or Australian. Cant tell if you support gun laws or not.
You are saying police in Australia are no good so we need guns? And semi automatic ones? I would disagree with that.

Hey Henry, I don't know if you have noticed but America isn't Australia. Unlike Australia, America has a constitution to fight for, America has 300 Million people, 280 Million more than Australia, How the hell can we even compare ourselves to them? And just because one psychopath does something stupid, doesn't mean everyone should pay the price. Smoking kills more people per year than guns yet we just put sickening pictures and health warnings on the packets.

Its a stupid argument. If you dont like your government then dont vote for them. If you are republican then you are the minority suck it up. Thats democracy.
Are so many Americans really potential terrorists.
I am surprised that so many will admit on the internet that they seek gun ownership to protect themselves from the government. Only in America.
If you take up arms against your government you are a terrorist. Citizens dont need what soldiers do.

Also, nobody I know has a gun for 'protection'. Most people that own guns in Australia own them for shooting/hunting.
Well, there's the problem right there...inbred mentality and group think are a no go.
You see firearms as a sport of leisure, where as the possibility of using it as a tool of defense has missed the proverbial mark.
As for your watered down generalization, here's one: Funny how you find the motivation to displace an indigenous species easy to come by, but the thought of protecting your own never occurred.

We have a constitution. You think America is the only nation with a constitution?
So your best stuff is to say that Americans have a constitution and shouldnt be punished by having their semi autos taken away? The constitution encourages terrorism and is dated.
Needs amendments once in a while I guess. And my opinion has nothing to do with mass murder. I dont think people should have guns for protection at all. I never have. Guns are for criminals. Policing is for police. If guns stopped crime then America would be safe.
And you are a strange libertarian if you want to ban smoking.

They'll have to pry my guns from my dead cold hands, it's tyranny and the liberal neocon illuminati globalists want to take the guns so that we're unable to stand up to them. It's all clear as day. If you're not screaming anf furious then you are unAmerican and a traitor to your nation.
I mean look at Australia. You all had your guns ripped right out from under you. You had no choice. You were neutered when they took your guns. you were men, but now you're cowards - little girls wearing short skirts and afraid to bend over in a dark room.
*reads op*
*arguments all fall down*
*New tactic*
I don't care about Australia, you sound like a slave country to me. They will have to pry my guns from my cold dead hands.
