International Olympic Committee has ruled out marking the 40th anniversary of the Munich massacre at the London Olympics opening ceremony but will visit the airfield where some Israeli team members were killed, it said on Saturday.
International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge rejected calls for an official commemoration of the 1972 Munich Games attack during Friday's curtain raiser, a standing request of the families of the 11 Israeli Olympic team members who died.
By striking at the London Olympics, terrorists would accomplish a double blow against Israel and against Britain, a foe of the Islamic republic.

To the extent there is something wrong with the games you certainly hit what it is. If the commercialism were removed or at least cut back to a decent level, the games represent the only event that nations have maintained in common through good and bad for a very long time. It's not any one event, to my thinking, it's the history and what it represents for unity above whatever else is happening in the world (with a few exceptions...) that make it special.
Honestly, I've only caught the opening and closing ceremonies since I saw some of the Olympics as a kid in 1984. Sports has never been my thing...but the symbolism matters when almost everything else has been tossed to the side.

The assassins
Israel is the only country in the “free world” that has an
explicit policy of carrying out political assassinations as an
instrument of state policy. While many countries covertly
engage in the practice of “executive action,” Israel is unique
in its openness. According to Thomas, Meir Amit, who
headed the Mossad during 1963-68, set down a series of
guidelines for how and when Israel would carry out sanc-tioned assassinations, guidelines that remain in force to this
day. The policy was set in stonepriorto the 1972 Black
September Olympics massacre in Munich.

...given how badly London Olympic organizers have totally botched the little things...like security....I think a major incident will become tied around England's neck like an albatross....
