What kind of response could we see. Erdogan has spoke in the past of ousting Assad. I still find it hard to know whos agenda Erdogan stands by. I think he is big time in bed with the brotherhood. And the Muslim brotherhoods agenda is not what the world needs years into the future.

Seems the Syrian authority were quick to cool any tensions. Hope the apology goes over well:

Syrian authorities have apologized for taking down a military plane that had lost contact with the Turkish Armed Forces earlier today, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said.

Pretty sure they didnt know it was a Turkish airplane

turkey was probably doing a reconaisance flight

If that plane was from the US .. we would be in war now

I don't think so... The US has no interest in fighting Syira. Wouldn't be much of a fight anyway. It might take a half a day to wipe out their air force. The US, like I said, has no interest in weakening an already weak nation enough to allow some other, closer neighbor, to go in and finish the job. In the whole picture, We can afford to loose a single jet.

A joint rescue team is underway.

Syrian reports claim the pilots have been captured, Turkish reports claim the pilots have been rescued.

LOL, how typical.

Well one parachute has been found at least, now just to locate the pilots.

ok All I dont see is the actual Doctor Assad and forces of his firing off the rounds of various types that have hit the various targets . I know he is a bad man , the regime is corrupt , his wife is British , it might be why we're not doing anything , for those clear links .

I dont see though I have looked , any repressive activity such as there did exist or was , during the earlier uprisings .and riots and continual protests .

I dont see a reason , bar , reprisals towards those who protested , though formally they may have been tortured and arbitrarily imprisioned for their views , but bar those reasons , they are not good enough reasons to say that Doctor assad and his regime have so crazy as to bombard their citizens in their own country with their own weaponry .

Therefore what we're being presented , ie Doctor Assad etc is evil , nasty men , etc , is only half the truth or there is something fishy going on , only in my opinion .

Unfortunately I am swayed toward the fact that a very close neighbour is a certain agitator . What reason they'd have for it , well , dont ask me to explain how psychopaths work , and I dont mean the Turkish

Lol, check the BBC.

The Turks have said Syria has apologized for the shooting but Damascus has replied saying it violated their airspace and was dealt with accordingly.

Looks like both are ready to attack each other. Even with Turkey's pretty large army I don't think they will last long against Assad's chemical stockpile. Either will Israel. Drop a few dirt bombs On Tel Aviv and you have wiped out 50% of the Israeli populace and left their military command decimated.

You're still confused. The name used was DB Cooper, and the aircraft was a 727.

See ya,

what does israel have to do with this story?

that would be like me wishing you would die from an errant bomb in the war that would happen if syria decided to end their existence.

TUrkey would ABSOLUTELY destroy Syria. Dont forget that Turkey has nukes on its soil from NATO. If Assad unleashes some gas or even looks like he will, his country will be incinerated. Damascus will become a ruinous heap.

In case you wonder:

Of the three nuclear powers in NATO (France, the United Kingdom and the United States), only the United States has provided weapons for nuclear sharing. As of November 2009, Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey are still hosting U.S. nuclear weapons as part of NATO's nuclear sharing policy.

My Friends I suggest you pray all this blows over and ends happy...

An event in the magnitude of war with Syria would not end well for anyone...

We would all do well to remember our lessons from WW1 and avoid letting an alliance pact spiral towards world war.

If this ends in further hostility, Turkey can and should duke it out one-on-one with Syria. A larger NATO abstention reverses the situation and leaves Russia/China/Iran in the hotseat they have planned for the West. After all their threats it will be hard for them to justify being the third man in. In isolation, it will be an easy task for Turkey to defeat a government handcuffed by civil war.

Then the UN Security Council can negotiate a provisional plan that guarantees the Russians the port of Tartus and although still troublesome, the threat of world war would be averted or at least punted.

Why? If the plane was shot down over Syrian airspace then they had the right to shoot it down. A foreign country needs permission to fly their planes over a nations territory, if they don't seek that permission then it gets shot down and they are classed as the aggressors

Its why there wasn't a war when Iran shot a drone down, or when Russia shot down a blackbird, they shouldn't of been there in the first place.

Perhaps then the U.S. should have shot down every Russian airplane that flew over U.S. territory without permission, and so should have Canada done the same thing...

CTV.ca News Staff

Date: Fri. Feb. 27 2009 10:56 PM ET

Moscow hit back at Defence Minister Peter MacKay on Friday, calling the minister's comments about the flight of two Russian bombers a "farce," the Russian news agency Ria Novosti reported Friday.

The rhetorical sparring comes after two long-range Russian bombers flew near Canadian airspace in the arctic less than 24 hours before President Barack Obama visited Ottawa on Feb. 19 - an occurrence which MacKay called a "strong coincidence."

Two Canadian CF-18 fighters intercepted the Russian aircraft and MacKay warned Russia on Friday to "back off" from flying near the Canadian border.

The incident has ignited a fierce debate about territorial sovereignty as European nations, Canada and the U.S. squabble about claims in the arctic.

But Russia sent a clear response to MacKay's warnings.

"The Canadian defense minister's statements concerning the flights of our long-haul aircraft are totally unclear," a Russian military source said Friday, adding that the flight was routine.

Does nobody remembers these "incidents"?... They happened one after the other and were reported in ATS....

Doubt me? This is what will happen AT THE MOST from Turkey:

- close all borders
- halt all trade
- close any eventual oil or gas pipeline that could exist
- stop any eventual transmission of electricity that could exist
- forbid any ship with Syrian flag to sail in Turkish waters
- stop any international flights between the two countries
- cut all bank transations
- freeze all Syrian assets in Turkey
- ask for sanctions against Syria in the United Nations

Shall this be the call of war?

Mayhap, it seems rather convenient,

Yet still, this may be just another step within the Staircase of War

Except they didn't fly over US or Canadian airspace. They flew along the edge of it, and were escorted while flying through the area.

There are a lot of conflicting reports on the incident with the Turkish jet. It's not even clear whether it is an RF-4E (which is a recon version of the F-4E) on an ISR mission, or an F-4E or even a flight of F-4Es testing air defenses in the area (which a pretty common thing to do. We still do it to a number of countries with RC-135s, just out of missile range).

One version has it probably flying at fairly high altitude and being hit by an SA-5 Gammon, a surface to air missile built by the Soviet Union in the 1960s. Another version, from the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has it being hit by gunfire approximately 1km off the coast (there's even a video of some AA guns firing at a beach with a bunch of beach goers watching, but there's no sign of a plane or of a plane being hit).

There were apparently two aircraft flying on the mission, if it was an RF-4, it was probably flying outside Syrian airspace when it was hit, and crashed inside their airspace.

It is obvious Syria wanted to use its new Missile battery. They tested it out and it worked. So now , they are going to apologize and be all nice. I doubt i would go to war over a single downed plane , but if it happened again. Wouldnt be a matter of if , it would be when.
