We have the infant formula companies partly to blame for this culture against breast feeding, where people who see a breast feeding baby or in this case toddler and start thinking gross or incest or sexually inappropriate... it's truely awful that we as human's allowed this to happen.

Infant formulas were originally designed to be a medical nutritional tool for babies who are unable to breastfeed due to unfortunate circumstances such as maternal death or illness. Nowadays the formula industry accounts for US$20.2 billion (data for 2010). It doesn’t take Einstein to figure out that formula is now being used by more than the 2% of women who physically can’t breastfeed. What went wrong? Formula companies got greedy and laws didn’t keep up, that’s what. The greedier the company, the more strategic and underhanded their marketing becomes. Greed is more powerful than concern for infant welfare.

It's very sad that you can show breasts, buttocks and whatever else on the front of a magazine but people are sickened by something natural. My daughter got breast milk till she was 4.

Anyone who thinks there's something sexual in that needs to see someone about their perverted views. Seriously, if that's an issue with you then it's you that needs sorted, because it has a knock-on effect to others.

There was a similar huge fuss last week in the UK over a young woman who decided to keep her underarm hair. Thank god for law and order or that hairy pits lady and the breast-feeding mothers would have been toasted on their own funeral pyres by now. That's the truth of it. Yes the world is CRAZY. And most of you are the cause of it.

People on this thread are really making a stretch to justify this. "The" point, is in fact only "your" point.
I stated on an earlier post that the clue is in the development of teeth. When a human develops teeth, which this child has obviously had for quite some time, it's nature's way of saying it's time to move on. Solid foods are the way to go; the body needs more nutrients than mother's milk at this point, can provide to a growing, active child.

I'm sure he has reached his healthy intake of mother's antibiotics and all the good stuff babies get from mother's milk, and yet she continues to do it. Why? It's her issue, not the childs.

So he eats solid food, too? And she is only doing this as a supplement? Hm. If he has a healthy diet, he doesn't need a supplement. If he does, he would probably derive more from a vitamin.

She does this for "nurturing"? Oh please. If she doesn't know any other ways to nurture her child other than keeping him habitually tied to her breast, then she needs to develop some.

Again, this is her issue.

Cow's milk is for baby cows. I certainly agree with that. I never touch the stuff, even as an adult. In fact, the healthy aspects of it, I think we all know by now, were vastly overplayed in the past.

In third world nations, of course women feed their babies as long as they can. It's a necessity. But the real reasons this woman does this, may be only known to her, and the "reasons' she publicly provides are only attempts at justification.

There are many reasons why she is doing this, and they are all mostly self-serving. It's ludicrous, and unhealthy.
Note: Attention seeking? She put herself on the cover of "TIME". Jeez. I wonder how much they paid her for that?

Maybe she will use the money for breast implants, and FINALLY let her poor tired breasts dry up.

Just watched a local news report on this.

They quoted the mother in the picture as saying

She was nursed until she was 6 and she also still nurses her other child who is 5.

no cartoons I'm afraid, and were things not "natural" in the stone age

Wow some people are so out of touch with Nature and Reality
EDIT You say go live in the Amazon - well now you are really showing how you are deluded into thinking your Matrix view of reality is superior

And this says it all :

First his wife wrote a book...

It turns out that he and his wife Martha had written a lot of earlier books about attachment parenting before The Baby Book, including one with an evangelical approach. Read more: healthland.time.com...

and then he did-

I began to realize that Bill Sears’ theories are based not only on his experience as a pediatrician and father, as most of his readers assume, but also on the work of others and on the Searses’ own upbringings as Midwestern Catholics. Read more: healthland.time.com...

Go figure- this is all coming from the views of an Evangelical and a Catholic ... ?!

Edit to add-

Her son is a year older than we were told on the cover-

How old are your children? My adopted son is 5, and my biological son will be 4 next month. Read more: healthland.time.com...

Come on, of course it's wrong, once a child has teeth, it's time to wean and stop breastfeeding. Both of these people in the picture of the cover are rediculous.

I am very disappointed in the ATS community. This site is suppose to be a community of open minded people. How can so many so called enlightened members be so negative toward the natural process of breast feeding. My daughter is almost 2 and still breast feeds. She still eats solids, heck she can almost eat more than I can at the dinner table. She mostly just feeds before a nap or bed. She is the healthiest child I know. Never been sick. No random doctor visits. I fully suport my wife and daughter.

Furthermore, I'm not entirely sure what Time is up to, but this is clearly a propaganda piece. Either to bolster sales, demonize breast feeding for the formula industry, or some other governmental agenda. It's no secret that most print sales of periodicals are suffering to the competition of the internet. Has anyone actually read the ingredients of formula? Pretty much sugar. That sure does help the diabetic, pharma, allopathic health care industry in general for future profits. As for government conspiracy, it's well established the PTB want to break the family structure appart. It all starts at the beginning of life.

As a side note, I would never put my child or support my wife being exploited on the cover of a tabloid.

Incredible, I guess all breast feeding women and mothers are to be considered abusers, hell let tag them sex offenders.

BTW my father the older of 12 children was breast fed until he was six I the older of 4 children breast feed until I was 5 this is the way it was done back in the days when mothers milk was all it was there to keep children healthy until it ran dry and when it was not way the mother could privide milk it was something call "wet mothers" to do the job.

Incredible, I guess the manufactured propaganda of manufacture crap alternative milk from china is better grade supplement than mother's milk, something natural is now tabu.

I once witnessed a woman breast feeding her three year old...... Found it disgusting all the way around. Im a mom of two and breast feed both until they were about 8 mo. When the kid can drink from a sippy cup....its time to. Cut the cord from breast milk.....i think. Everyone has an opinion and im throwing mine out there.

As a mother who breastfed, I can say that there isn't anything sexual about it...at least for me there wasn't. However, I find this to be absolutely disgusting. I have a sister who moved out of state with her husband and children and joined some Mommy groups in her new community. These crazy women thrive on the attention and controversy they cause. They have "extreme breastfeeding" groups and "extreme baby wearing" groups. Many of these women try to "out nurse" eachother- they try to nurse their child longer than the other mothers to prove that they are the better mom. My sister "WEARS" her 21 month old CONSTANTLY. I find that to be disgusting too. You don't "wear" babies, you HOLD them! The poor kid has damage to his legs because they have been squished against her body, spread like frog legs, since birth! She plans to breastfeed him until he's at least 4. When she visits, everytime that poor child walks by, she grabs him up and puts him to the breast! In some cases it has absolutely nothing to do with the child...it's the mother's need for attention.

Blue Order
Yet you stated
"we used to club women over the heads and drag them into the cave"
Oh really did You indeed I am sure that went down well with chicks but that is a cartoon rather historical fact
Sorry to burst your bubble but cartoons are not real.

I feel pity for people who take issues with this kind of things. Pedophilia? Give me a break. How long chimps and gorilla breastfeed their young? I think that's a good benchmark for what kind of times are "natural". As for what's unnatural, how about indoctrination and brainwashing of children (i.e. making them believe into magical sky cameras)? Now that should be illegal and punishable by prison..

Okay...so now breast feeding is a form of child abuse and if you breast feed past the first year you're a pedo? Well I am giving all of the ignorant a middle finger..I breast feed and I do not do it for sexual pleasure I am feeding my child which is actually recommended. No wonder women are afraid to breast geed in public, because of how you all think. You people need to quite thinking with your genitals and actually start using your brain. I will breast feed as long as I like. Screw you guys I'm going home!

Hi there, while I do not agree with other posters that this is equal to child pornography or pedophilia, I do however agree with everything you stated in your post. Western mothers these days... Really, a friend of mine was similar, so I get where you are coming from..

To get to my point though, here in South Africa some mothers carry their children on their backs all the time. Even if they are old enough to walk. They end up with legs that are deformed to some extent. I have seen some really bad cases around here where children literally walk with their feet facing completely outward due to this.

It's one thing in Africa, but in a fully Westernized society, it really does come down to attention seeking, maybe not so much from other people, but from the actual child.

Yes, I was probably breastfed when I was a BABY. That doesn't look like a baby. I have no problem with a woman breastfeeding. To me it looks natural. We are supposed to be a part of nature, not above it.

Yet someone else coming up with a rule "If animals don't breastfeed for years, neither should people"
Have you done a study and how can you compare one animal with another as each have different life spans and ranges of time for development - In effect you are saying it is wrong but who are you to say
Let each make their own choice - OK you believe it be wrong at certain age then don't do it but also allow others their choice without condemning or wanting to make a rule for all
