123 Year Old Recording Recovered From Ancient Doll
A twelve second recording of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star from the first-ever talking doll could also be the first-ever commercial recording, historians are saying. The recently recovered recording, captured on a ring-shaped cylinder phonograph, was produced for Thomas Edison’s failed talking-doll business venture in 1888.

The recording eventually found its way to Jerry Fabris, museum curator of the Thomas Edison National Historical Park, who at first thought that the damaged, 123-year-old artifact was condemned to eternal silence. However, after attending a presentation on new 3-D scanning technology, Fabris brought the tin recording to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where an engineer named Carl Haber and another scientist successfully resurrected the audio.

Ok outside of being creepy looking [ I think all old dolls are creepy] I thought this was kind of cool. I wonder if they'll ever find out who actually recorded the message? I think it would be cool if they could track down the descendants and let them hear what their great great great gandsomething or other sounded like

Ok Actually that would be kind of creepy as well.

Lol... hey Slayer, notice how the doll's face is weathered? was she found buried up to her neck? or, is it just me?

Saw the show too and thought it was - Freaky - as is that doll in the o.p. though I have always thought most dolls were creepy (and clowns!) and this doll even creepier given the recording.

Clowns?

So how big are these dolls?
I don't know how big those are but google this (meaning I'm not posting the link):

Howard Stern said doll better than wife

He said "My wife isn't as good as this", referring to a full sized doll he was "intimate with" while on the air. I don't know if it could talk though, or make other vocalizations, but that would be pretty easy with today's technology.

It made me think of the movie Cherry 2000 Where the man is trying to decide between the doll and the real woman. In that movie, the doll can do more than just be better than a real woman in bed (according to Stern), it can also cook, wash the dishes and do laundry. That's a pretty creepy movie but it's not that hard to imagine at some point in the future there will be dolls that can do that, we're getting close already. This is a full sized robotic doll-woman:

I don't think she can do laundry yet, but she can talk and use her arms to point and make product demonstrations. And she doesn't need to leave the demonstration booth for a bathroom break like a real woman.

No doubt dolls are getting creepier all the time.

Love "B" Sci Fi, love Cherry 2000 and robot movies in general.

And I get your point about Howard and the life size dolls.

I did the googling. You made it clear you were not going to do it. Is their a stigma around this subject?

I found the human dolls, something a bit disturbing and that is the dead people human dolls. However, a doll to help with grieving could be a good thing, I would have to research and talk to the mental health community on this one. Then there was France which outlaws any doll that does not have a human face. Not sure I get that one. Then there was one Wikipedia human robotic life size sex robots with interchangeable faces (well, one would have to choose). Also some other dolls for pleasure. These also seem harmless to me in and of themselves.

But, this is something different, what MrsBlonde has brought to us, seems to be different in a psychological way. Also the way these dolls are sold...not on the up and up it appears and why? It occurs to me that pictures of the person are forwarded to the doll maker...perhaps very intimate pictures so the doll is as exact as possible. There are things that can be done in constructing the doll which enhance the connection between the doll and its owner. All of these questions are troubling to me.

They say there is never anything in the dark that is not there in the light. I have never found that to be true.

No but the links aren't neutral like wiki, they lead to commercial sites where you can buy the product so the reason I didn't post any links is to make it clear I'm not trying to promote these products, which would be a T&C violation.

I missed that part.

I did click on MrsBlonde's link and had to scroll about 1/3 of the way down to figure out how big the dolls are, where there's a photo of a hand next to the doll. It looks like the doll is roughly hand-sized.

Anyway it might help to be a ginger if you get one of those dolls, since gingers have no soul the dolls can't steal it! Just repeating a South Park joke.

The past speaks to us...

Sometimes while wearing a diaper

Nice find Slayer, and yes kinda creepy. These little looks into the past always intrigue me, so much has changed in that 123 years. Makes me hope I live to be 123 and see all the changes that will take place in that much time.

Hilarious and thanks.

Thanks for pointing out the hand size. Totally missed that.

Enough already with the dolls for me for a while.

Thanks Slayer...you should be teaching or in the field or a curator...great thread...a walk on the wild side of anthropology.

Isn't that the same guy who made a doll that felt pain?

No comment if true.

That Remco's Baby Laugh A Lot -commercial- looks like the most evil and possessed thing I have ever seen. I think it is MORE disturbing than a Gayce clown painting.
