I may have missed it, but did Obama say anything about Saudi troops invading Bahrain to suppress the pro-shia protests? As we know, Iran is the leading Shia country. Iran is looking to spreads its influence, just take a look at Iraq. The island of Bahrain is inhabited by mostly Shia Arabs but for 35+ years they've been under rule by a Saudi puppet Sunni monarch. Now with the civil unrest engulfing the entire Middle East, citizens of Bahrain want to establish a democracy that is pro-Shia. The Saudis will not allow this, and therefore assisting the King of Bahrain to suppress the protests.

As we've seen with Egypt, Tunisia, Syria, Libya, and Algiers, when they started using force against their citizens we said something. But what about the poor little island of Bahrain? They've been invaded by a foreign country, shouldn't this be the number one discussion in the United Nations halls?

I just find it odd that we say nothing when it's a pro-shia uprising. Just how much do we 'really' care about these peoples rights?

Agence France Presse - Iran says it offers 'moral' support to Bahrainis
by Farhad Pouladi – Fri Apr 22, 2:09 pm ET

news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20110422/wl_mideast_afp/gulfpoliticsiranbahrainsaudigcc

TEHRAN (AFP) – Iran said on Friday it gives "moral support" to the demands of Bahrain's people but without any involvement in the Shiite-led protests in the Gulf kingdom ruled by a Sunni dynasty.

"Other than offering moral support to the legitimate and peaceful demands of the people," Tehran has "no role in the events," foreign ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said in a statement emailed to AFP.

His remarks came after a joint GCC-European Union statement issued on Wednesday in Abu Dhabi backed the March 14 deployment of a Saudi-led Gulf force including UAE police in Bahrain.

The move freed up Bahraini security forces to crush the protest movement in the only Shiite-majority Arab state of the Gulf, in a move repeatedly condemned by Shiite-dominant Iran.

The GCC-EU statement said the two blocs played up "the importance of respect for the sovereignty of GCC members" -- Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE -- and "recognised the GCC is entitled to take all necessary measures to protect their citizens."

But Mehmanparast hit out at the European Union.

"Doesn't your silence in the face of these crimes show you taking sides in the situation and adopting double standards?" he asked.

Obama why the media blackout on bahrain?? Why havent you condemned the destruction of mosques and the killing of civians in bahrain. Typical of the wests double standards. Its seems to me the US goverment is protecting its massive arms deal and the west is worried about its oil .It would rather highlight and attack the country's it dousn't have influence over

most of the leaders in the middle east have been installed by influences outside of their respective countries. i do not feel that the iranians will assist in oppressing the peoples of syria. i feel this is another attempt at chipping away at iran until someone bites. the leaders of the west had better be careful with their motivations regarding all the troubled countries. it will backfire and the media will wash and rinse to further confuse the rest of the world. just my humble opinion.

The crackdown in Bahrain is an inconvenience to President Obama and the US foreign policy aims in the region. He will not touch the situation in Bahrain with a ten foot pole. To much is at stake if the Shia majority seizes power. Bahrain is the home port of the US Navy Fifth Fleet. I would not be surprised if back channel consent was given or a deal was made with the Saudis to go up there and quell the protests. The US is going to stay away from this one, because some significant real estate is at stake if the protesters succeed.

Oil, militant Islam and the terrifying dilemma now facing the West

Should Shiite unrest in Bahrain tip over into Saudi Arabia, the West’s oil supply could become seriously threatened. There is talk of oil prices doubling from the current record highs to $200 a barrel and beyond.
The Gulf monarchies are not quite like our own. Politics in the kingdoms, as with much of the Arab world, is a dog-eat-dog business

Bahrain is also the Middle Eastern base for America’s Naval 5th Fleet, made up of 3,000 military personnel who oversee 30 naval ships, along with 30,000 sailors who patrol the Persian Gulf and Arabian and Red seas.

The fleet is vital in ensuring that the region’s Straits of Hormuz remain open, for the simple reason that 40 per cent of the world’s oil traffic pass through them.

Bahrain’s proximity to Iran also makes it a crucial area from which the Americans can watch Iran.

Should Washington attempt to derail Iran’s nuclear ambitions — as it may have to at some stage — Bahrain would be the base for any strikes.

Bahrain is a vital strategic asset in the region. It is a double standard as you mention, however, when has there not been double standards by governments? Protest and cause civil unrest to their heart's content, however, if it threatens US foreign policy or strategic balances; the US or any government will remain mute on the subject regardless of the violence and mayhem. That is the fact of the matter concerning Bahrain.

And the Syrian government should demand that the US and western intelligence stop their covert operations in the region, and to stop indirect funding of a Syrian television station which is inflaming the opposition, real on the ground CIA and other operatives actively instigating and inspiring revolts.

True, as small as Bahrain is, it's strategic importance is great. A small island in the most busy oil shipping lane. Iran has threatened before, if they are attacked they'd shut down the Straits of Hormuz. Bahrain is a strategic island to hold when confronting Iran
