5.9? I think not. I smell the delicious aroma of butter ollocks cooking, and even some pork pies in there as well.

Historically, Quakers have been known for their refusal to participate in war; plain dress; refusal to swear oaths; opposition to alcohol; and participation in anti-slavery, prison reform, and social justice movements. Quakers are also known historically for founding Barclays and Lloyds banks, financial institutions such as Friends Provident and manufacturing companies including Clarks, Cadbury, Rowntree and Fry's.

A pub for Quakers sounds rather dull. No booze. They did make a good chocolate though.

That quake even shows up, just, in Antarctica: QSPA.IU.85.HHZ.2011.341

Hi guys,
I know this really isn’t the right place to post but I figure someone might know what I am talking about.

I have a few questions: Do volcanos have magnetic or gravitational effects??

Would be great if someone could point me in the right direction.
Thanks.

Hi,throwcats, here are a few links to check out on you question.

The identification of electromagnetic field disturbances associated with volcanic activity has a relatively young history. Initial measurements in the 1950s on Mihara volcano in Japan focused on monitoring the inclination and declination of the magnetic field while on Kilauea in Hawaii static electric fields (self-potential, SP) were shown to reflect the intrusion activity. More robust magnetic and electric field observations since the 1960s show changes of several tens of nanotesla and more than a hundred mV km 1 accompany eruptions from volcanoes (Johnston, 1997; Zlotnicki, 1995). Following eruptions, much larger changes result from remagnetization processes.

thought I felt a quake this morning, I was working on a Lift Room roof on an Apartment Bldg in central Wellington, felt it, looked around and seen nothing moving so put it down to my imagination.
On the same Fault as the 5.7, the Wairau Fault, but at the northern end, the one that runs past our beach, this quake a lot closer this time.
Not that big.

Another smallish one Wellington area, behind the Orongorongo Ranges east of the city, this time on the Wairarapa Fault.
Still not many aftershocks at the Cook Strait 5.7 location, but the whole area has lit up like a Christmas Tree in a 50km radius.

Nothing to be concerned about. It happens to many seismos. Not sure of the EXACT cause but it is not seismic.

A very EXTRENE example is the permanent headache exhibited by Bilibino (which is offline just when I need it) but a very moderate version is Armenia, Garni [IU]

Interesting that the quakes in Indonesia and the surrounding region have become less frequent and we're getting a lot more activity in the USA. I haven't had a return of any mysterious noises and shaking yet, but there has been a strange deep rumbling noise followed by a jet, which I think is what all those other topics are about... It's spooky when I hear it around 1:00AM... It makes everything shake slightly making me wonder constantly if it's tremors or not.

I had another nightmare. But hey, we've all had nightmares. I've learned to control the ones that occur while I'm sleeping, it's the other ones that have me worried. I have an obsession. I am kept captive by water.

Can humans can earthquakes?
Yes.
Along with injection and fracking, geothermal drilling causes earthquakes. There is also evidence that damming rivers to create water reservoirs can cause earthquakes. Funny thing. All of these have a common ingredient. Water. Even nuclear detonations don't cause earthquakes. Hmm. Water is pretty powerful.

I've even tried to link hurricanes to earthquakes. Maybe that was silly.
www.abc.net.au...

So, water seems to be always sticking it's nose into every aspect of geology. It's like Zelig. Always there, but blending into the background.

There has been a recent study on the water under Yellowstone. Or at least the heat given off by the aquifer. It is showing that the "plumbing" Yellowstone is ever changing and some systems may be connected to thermal areas outside the park's boundaries. They've been studying the system because corporations want to build geothermal power plants beside the volcano. And they want to see if they'll screw up Old Faithful's timing.

I find this article a bit misleading, but hey, that's what the press does...

www.digitaljournal.com...

Here's the NASA report...
www.nasa.gov...

Can geothermal drilling cause earthquakes?
www.popsci.com...

So what?
This means there may be geothermal drilling near Yellowstone in the future.

serc.carleton.edu...

magicvalley.com...

I suppose at the moment this may be science fiction. But here's some science fact. They are already fracking to the south and east of Yellowstone. And they want to get even closer. There's mining to the east as well. And they've dammed the rivers around Yellowstone. Dare I say it, I think Yellowstone is surrounded and under threat.

Here's some pure speculation about the recent activity at Yellowstone. I believe that the magma chamber is being recharged. The regional earthquakes have migrated from west to east. There almost seems to be two tracks. One through Utah. And the other from Washington State through Idaho.

Seems like high tides. The moon is shining bright. Lots of microseismic noise.

Here's something I can't believe someone said. Because it's so stupid.

"Holland argues that Oklahoma’s geology is very complex across the state, and because Oklahoma has rocks near the surface that contain oil, he can’t put a flat line on anything at this depth that equates an earthquake to hydraulic fracturing.

“Back in the ’40s, they were fracturing the well by using explosives,” Holland said. “In my mind, water would the more preferable constituent. Hydraulic fracturing is an incredibly important technology. It’s better than us getting addicted to fossil fuels.” "

www.oudaily.com...

This supposedly educated person said it's better than us getting addicted to fossil fuels. Really. I know the word is overused these days, but, REALLY? Getting addicted. This guy is so far behind. Even George Bush admitted there is already an addiction. And the lunacy of fracking to provide our energy needs is proof. When a doctor gives you medicine, they must calculate the risk to benefit ratio. In this case, the risk outweighs the benefits. As does the idea of use geothermal energy near Yellowstone. As is the practice of fracking near Yellowstone. If the aquifer is more interconnected than suspected, we could have methane getting into the plumbing. We could have flaming geysers. Wow. What a sight that'd be.

If you think there's been too many problems caused by fracking, you ain't seen nothing yet.

www.bloomberg.com...

caucuses.desmoinesregister.com...

Perry might not end up President. But it doesn't really matter. Republican or Democrat, the US Energy Policy is already set in stone and fracking is the future.

Kdog found this video. I don't always agree with the presenter, but hey, the picture is worth a thousand words alone.

www.youtube.com...

If landslides and erosion from storms can contribute to earthquakes, I wonder what mountain top mining can do?

Can we predict earthquakes?
Sometimes. But it's hard.

insurancenewsnet.com...

Can humans cause earthquakes?
You bet.
