Is It Soup Yet? - 2400 Year Old Pot of Soup Found

While working on a tomb in Xian, China archeologists unearthed a pot that still contained soup after 2400 years.

Chinese archaeologists unearth 2,400-year-old 'soup'

The liquid and bones were in a sealed bronze cooking vessel dug up near the ancient capital of Xian - home to the country's famed terracotta warriors.

Tests are being carried out to identify the ingredients. An odourless liquid, believed to be wine, was also found.

The pots were discovered in a tomb being excavated to make way for an extension to the local airport.

"It's the first discovery of bone soup in Chinese archaeological history," the newspaper quoted Liu Daiyun of the Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology as saying.

They believe the tomb either belonged to a land owner or a military officer. The soup was apparently a "bone soup" due to the number of bones found in the remaining liquid. It is currently off for analysis to determine the ingredients and recipe. Who knows - maybe it will re-made, canned and on the grocery store shelves by next year.

Vintage wine too?

I wonder how much that bottle will go for, i mean it is aged well.

I think they called it porage back then...

I would love to try some of the bone porage, probally cat and dog in it.....

The soup is alright, not gone off, they didnt have sell by dates back then!
The wine has definitley got be vintage lol
And yea, who know eh? Maybe they'll be on the shelves with a logo saying '2,400 years of exellence"...lol

Some of the "greasy spoon" dives right here in the United States probably have soups older than that. In fact, many of the salad bars at the "all you can eat" buffets can beat that record.

It looks like we could learn a thing or two from those guys about preserving food. Man that was one helluva good seal on that pot!

Let’s not overlook the great potential this soup has to offer.
The contents of this soup can tell us so much about the dietary
habits of that time period. What did they hunt, what type of herbs
and spices did they use.
I hope they take the time to excavate this dig site properly
and not let the government push to get the runway completed.

People eat dog, horse, camel, pig, cow, grasshoppers, spiders, rabbit, jellyfish, pretty much anything, including each other. It's cultural differences that upset us, especially when the furry balls of fluff we keep as pets tug on our heart strings.. I wouldn't mind trying it, in the right setting, with gravy and a well-matched wine.

What a wonderful discovery. I love finding out about (Asian) History and the development of cultures.

I seen this story earlier this week and was comtemplating posting it for the past few days.

however i can't see the excitement level of soup being all that high.

Yes cats are still popular to eat in China.

It's a subject I have trouble applying rationalism to. Of course on the one hand a Chinese woman preaching to us about not being cruel to the cute little Moo Cows would appear quite annoying.

On the other hand my rationality goes out of the window and I think AGHHHHHH don't hurt the kitties

Back to the OP. How can they be sure that some bones in a copper pot is soup?

Perhaps it isn't soup at all, maybe it is a really evil djinni that was sealed into a bronze pot. I see a lot of small human looking images around that opened bottle........i mean pot.

When it turns out to be human bones in that soup, China will suppress the story and we will never hear another word about it.
