Behind closed doors in Washington, American officials are shaping an overhaul of the 1994 federal statute that requires phone and broadband carriers to ensure their networks can be wiretapped.....

Based on a chilling recent precedent, the risk is substantial that this so-called technical updating will spread far beyond what’s said to be contemplated — and greatly expand the already expansive power of the government to spy on Americans. Congress should be especially cautious about the scope of the revision.

Full Story / Source

Some would say this would be a final step to Government destruction of our civil and private rights as US citizens. Just blows me away.

2 sided argument IMO.

1) They are spying on citizens yes, and that takes away civil liberties, which is bad.

2) If you arent someone breaking the law, this has NO effect on you what-so-ever, go about your normal daily business. It is intended to spy on "terrorist" and crack down on internet crime and child pornography.

Any logical person can at minimum understand both sides. Which side they decide is based mostly on their principles/values/patriotism (Im not saying either way is more patriotic than the other)

It is already here and it has been working for years. How do I know? I install and maintain the equipment. I think now the move they are trying to make is to make it all "legal" and "justifiable" when people find out how much "ease of access" the government already has. This has been going on for years and then with the 9/11 and the Patriot Act it just started steam rolling further into the fog.

Nobody has any privacy when it comes to communications. I don't care how many MAC addresses you clone or how many times you try to spoof your ip address. It simply does not matter anymore. VOIP is probably the greatest thing that has ever happened to the government when it comes to this stuff. You can encrypt all you want but the algorithmic functions are no match for big brother.

Look into VOIP funding by the feds and see where all the money goes. The feds pay the death star to upgrade equipment and bring the infrastructure up to date with current technology.

This will show my age, but.....

It will be similar to the days of the CB radio. Not a bit of privacy, everyone knows your business, you can't hide without being tracked down.....I remember back when the cops and Feds would "tune in" to the CB waves and hide around the corner in their mysterious vehicles...waiting to catch someone breaking the rules.

Funny how history keeps repeating its self, only much more technologically advanced now.

Just like how the laughably named "Patriot Act" was only supposed to be used against terrorism suspects, but in reality they use it for everything under the sun.

No logical thinking person could support giving government more power.

I think its more than obvious that the US Gov't thinks everyone is a terrorist until they prove otherwise.

We all know its a government of paranoia.
