Radiation also has an oxidizing effect on the body. Patients undergoing radiation therapy are theoretically not supposed to take anti-oxidants during treatment, since it may interfere with the radiation damaging the target cells. SO, not just vitamin C, but any anti-oxidant could potentially help a little. But, when it comes to large doses of radiation, I don't think any amount of nutrition is going to do much good personally.

Vitamins against radiation? LOL. Unless those vitamins somehow prevent radioactive particles from shredding DNA, they're useless.

I hear when Chernobyl happened a bunch of people in the area got really nice suntans that they could not explain. Of course, a few weeks later their "suntans" turned.

I have always wondered if russia had poured tons of concrete into the containment area.

I wonder if anyone has ever found any documentation on what they did to try and contain the radiation when Chernobyl melted.

the article provided no scientific data on the actual radiation left in that area.
Also does anyone have hard data on what happens to woodlands that contain an unspecified amount of radiation,. burn?.

For all we know the radiation left may be little or nothing.

This feels like the gulf scare,. everyone was freakin out about how the gulf spill was gonna explode and decimate the coastal area. and yeah THAT didn't happen..

Even firefighters tackling the blazes, which officials say have hit forests in Russia's Bryansk region tainted by radioactive dust from the 1986 Chernobyl reactor disaster, are unlikely to run any added nuclear contamination risks.

The amount of radiation in smoke would be only a fraction of the original fallout, they say.

"Of the total radioactivity in the area, much less than one percent of it will be remobilized," said Jim Smith, an expert on Chernobyl and a specialist in Earth and Environmental Sciences at Britain's University of Portsmouth.

Radioactive contamination in the area has substantially diminished in the almost two and a half decades since explosions at Chernobyl's reactor No. 4 caused the world's worst civil nuclear disaster on April 26, 1986.

"Most of the radioactivity is in the soil, which will not be affected by the fires, and only a small proportion is in the vegetation," Smith said in a telephone interview. "And of that only a very small proportion of that will get re-suspended in the smoke from the fires."

But don't let that stop you from screaming "the sky is falling!"

And of course this information will be rejected, since we can't have pesky things like "facts" and "experts" keeping us from our desperately needed epic freakout of the week.

it's hard to trust an article that doesn't quote one source ...

Russians have lost about 15 Billion dollars worth because of the fires.
That will be a tough hurdle.

Either way, nothing to joke about or play with. Considering it's really hard for any one average person to detect contaminants in the enviroment.

the reality is this

if this is real, no one will say anything until everyone is dead

simply because, a lot of rich people would have to be alerted first, to they can be evacuated safely

so, you wont know about the information from the media

and lets be realistic, there is no place to put all those people ...

I have two questions/observations:

(1) Surely any substance launched into the atmosphere in such great volume would eventually make it to just about every place on earth, wouldn't it?

The containment was a sarcophagus over the reactor building, so in essence it is a building over a building, and yes it is concrete. Sadly concrete becomes fragile over time when it is exposed to such levels of radiation and the interior of the sarcophagus has been breaking apart into a thick layer of radioactive dust.

The Ukraine has explored the reactor area with remote robots to film what is in there, and any movement stirs up the dust because it is so thick. They know the ceiling is starting to collapse from the inside and eventually all of it will come tumbling down the entire contents of radioactive dust will fill the stratosphere and circle the globe, coming down little by little in rain and snow.

The Ukraine has repeatedly appealed to the UN and Russia to help them build another structure over this sarcophagus, but their pleas have landed on deaf ears. These are the same ears that took money from the World over the Oil for Food projects. The Ukraine is broke and cannot afford to do this on their own so everything has just been sitting, and deteriorating, building into pure Death for so many in the Future.

They can spend it for themselves, but they cannot think of the Generations ahead.

Evacuating all of Europe and Russia is completely absurd. Most of the area around Chernobyl is safe enough to walk through these days, as long as you don't stick around for more than a few hours or so. I've seen documentaries filmed on site there. No radioactive suits required.

It's true that the fires might release some radiation into the air. But this is so over the top it's kind of funny. Even the original disasters didn't warrant an evacuation of that scale, and that was decades ago. You can detonate a nuclear bomb in Siberia and the people in Moscow wouldn't feel a thing. In fact I'm pretty sure they've done that.

The very big problem i have personally with threads titled such as this, is what the hell are we meant to do when it really IS the 'real deal'..so many boys crying wolf that we may just simply roll our eyes and move along.. i'm not saying that this issue of the OP isnt a problem, it certainly isnt a good situation! but as for leaving Europe over it.. my first reaction was 'bite me' (sorry) as i would much rather my loved ones were moving out of America at a rapid speed..regardless though smoke doesnt exactly go by invisible dividing lines of areas and it could affect a number of places negatively.

Vitamins wont help in the least, however cell salts and Potasium Iodide will, as radiation attacks the thyroid, and iodine binds its receptor.

alpha lipoic acid is an extremely powerful anti-oxidant. useful for this sorta thing, i should think.

the article in the OP said that the other facility, the one with even worse junk than chernobyl, has alot of nasty stuff, not just nuclear stuff. read the article carefully. if it's a bio hazard, like some weirdo biological warfare agents, i seriously doubt they would leave them in an old, above ground facility. biohazards of that magnitude are usually buried in heavy duty containers or disposed of in some "safe" manner. anybody happen to know what that facility was making before it was closed?
