Imagine being the next guy to use that seat?! Wtf! You'd be leaning casually on the armrest...not knowing it'd been stuck up a guy's sweaty buttcrack.

It has nothing to do with genetic make up...that is BS.

Its simply to do with eating more than you burn!

I have to agree here, I've seen some people who have very large parents but are of a normal weight themselves.

My mum, who was born just as WWII ended, and rationing was still happening, would tell you just how many fat people there were in the 50's & 60's. Not many at all, nobody could afford the amount of food & drink it takes to become morbidly obese. People appreciated food, and to have a large roast dinner on Sunday was a bigger highlight than opening presents on xmas.

If such a gene existed, then it doesn't exist in Africa does it. If they knew about it they'd be begging to find out if they could somehow be given this 'fat gene' to stop them starving to death.

Being overweight is about you consuming more calories than your body needs for energy, fat cells are unused energy. If you're on a medication that can cause weight gain, then your doctor should advise a plan of eating that lessens this side effect, the same goes for a medical condition or a genetic condition, if your body needs less calories, you eat less calories. Not loading up on calories doesn't mean not eating either.

I am certainly not a thin person, I am not predisposed to being thin either, it would be so easy for me to baloon to 30 stone. However, I won't because I do not overeat or eat foods that will cause me to put on weight.

Yes I enjoy the occasional piece of SF Chicken or a bar of chocolate or a cola, but I don't live off it. You can eat whatever the hell you like and still keep a healthy weight, it's all about how much of it you eat.

fat gits should be sent " as freight " in specialist presurised cargo planes - in the same manner as race horses - and charged / kilo

I would actually say the Airlines are breaking some form of guideline allowing that sort of thing. But you couldnt bring it up since the guy would sue you for discrimination.

That's the logical part of the story that people forget when they get caught up in the emotional and irrelevant aspects surrounding what took place. What if another passenger wanted to carry a large Stereo Box on their lap for the full flight because they feared it might get damaged in storage? Would everybody be defending that person, even though the Box would present a clear safety hazard in the event of a potential evacuation? I doubt it.

my opinion on the " excuses " for being fat :

why do fat people eat so much ?

its not a trick question - but i notice it a lot at supermarkets and food outlets

its the fat peope who always have the most

neither genetics nor your thyroid makes you eat a full KFC bucket by yourself - i couldnt believe it till i saw it

May I suggest reading my whole post other than the first line, that way you can see that I am agreeing with you

In Canada they've ruled that they CAN'T charge for 2 seats to obese people because it's discriminatory.

Just saying.

Airplanes should make ``special areas`` for obese people... Some of them are basically handicapped...

And this is sad that a 14 years old is already that size...

Wow, is EVERYTHING discriminatory now? It's not the airline's fault your fat ass takes up 2 god damn seats.

When I posted this, I expected a debate, but I didn't expect so many people to agree with me. 95% of the people on this thread agree with my point.

Sadly, it is discrimination these days to tell someone they are overweight, hence why there are so many obese people. It has become a social norm. Sometimes a little bit of disagreement and honesty are needed to provide an incentive for the given people to alter their ways.

As someone else quite rightly mentions above, no medical condition, medication or genetic problem causes someone to fill their face with fast food, sugary drinks and cream cakes. It's the person's choice what they eat, and if the condition is that bad, they should be under the care of nuritionists who would give them a diet to prevent them gaining so much weight.

As I also said further back in this thread, I know lots of people with thyroid problems, both underactive and overactive, and they are not fat, they're not even close! Yes they have to watch what they eat & count their calories, but they certainly don't fill two plane seats!

Or...he just might be the one big enough to burst through a door or window to let you escape or shield you from flames or shrapnel. Oh and I'm not giggling.

Okay, so let me get this straight - a person who is OBESE for whatever reason - supercedes the rights of a THIN person???? What the heck?
Maybe we should give all the rights to the unfortunate obese and infringe on those who are thin? Sorry, I don't get this one AT ALL.

I think that the obese girl should have had to pay for two tickets but she's 14 and I'm sure like any 14 year old she's extremely self conscious. Kicking the smaller plane was not the right thing to do what they should have done was move the obese girl to another plane.

The article doesn't address whether she has pre-existing medical conditions that caused her to be obese. Now that's not the case in most situations but you never know. Many people with dietary issues end up having rapid weight gain and even weight loss. I know two people who are allergic to wheat gluten and one has rapid weight loss while the other has rapid weight gain. the one who had rapid weight gain went from a size 4-6 to being a 10-12 in a year and a half. If she were a larger framed person she would have had the appearance of being obese. Before you start calling people fat and lazy realize that not EVERY fat person is lazy just 99% of them.

I'm sure this wasn't very pleasant for all involved. But come on, she's a fourteen year old, a baby, traveling by herself and probably very self conscious of her weight.

I honestly wouldn't have thought twice about giving up my seat for her or the lady who was asked to disembark.

Are kind people becoming such a rarity?

And this is sad that a 14 years old is already that size, yes I agree I blame the parents for letting her get to that size, unless she has a medical condition, but planes should make special areas or should they I dont know, TBH if I was on that plane I probably would have wanted to get off incase the thing crashed with all the extra weight or maybe it would not have been able to get off the ground at all.

No big deal the Airline most likely gave the woman that was displaced another flight and a free ticket too.

The Airline made a responsible choice to protect a minor, my hats off to them. She was 14 and traveling alone........Minor, not an adult.

Most of the time when your bumped like that they offer Free round trip tickets.

People are heavy these days, even though I'm personally not heavy I don't pick on over weight people.

I would wager your issues are internal and we just can't see them.

Are we being a bit harsh here because we can see someones issues?

Obese people can indeed be that way due to genetics. We cannot assume that this girl is just lazy and loves junk food. That said, I am baffled that a paying customer could be kicked off the plane. Did she buy her ticket in advance or was she on standby?

Edit: One of the comments on the site claims the woman was on standby. In that case, fine. There was no seat available for her. The girl is only 14; the airline cannot just dump her off the plane and leave her in the airport.

Absolutely the worst kind of enabling

I'm sorry nobody gets big enough to take up 2 seats, unless they are cramming food down their throats. Genetics play no role what so ever.

So sick of people attempting to use any cop out they can.

Agreed!

This for me sounds like "Be fat and become first!".

With just 14 years old and already requiring two seats in airplane I have to guess that this kid won't reach her 30's.

Most of the fat people that are handicap is just because of being fat in the first place.

Airliners should ask when booking a flight if you are overweight and require 2 seats. Maybe they can give a discount if you buy 2 seats because you are overweight.

But its not fair what hapend to that lady.
