Gordon Brown Gaffe : Calls woman a Bigot

You are right mate about everything, except we don't vote for Prime Ministers like the US votes for Presidents.

As you know I am very much against the current electoral and parliamentary systems but I would just like to point out that Gordon Brown is by no means unique in his position as an unelected Prime Minister.

Here is a list of Prime Ministers who have been 'elected' to the role since 1900.

David Cameron's Conservative Party has done quite well out of the current system.

That he calls for reform reeks of popularism and I very much suspect that if he is 'elected' he will conveniently forget about his pledge to reform.
Let's face it, how many of us would remember it?

Not wanting to derail the thread, but this get's repeated so many times that every now and again I feel it's necessary to point out.

As for people not wanting to vote Labour ever again, I fully understand that.

And as someone who lived through, and was affected by, The Thatcher years, I, and many like me, could never, ever, bring myself to vote Conservative!

I truly hope that this event will cause the majority of the Labour fans to see the same disgust, moronic attitude and stupidity that Brown portrays to me.

He sets this up? I'm sure that the rest of the candidates don't - well I haven't seen any evidence yet. Another reason why not to vote Labour - this episode shows we can't trust them and shows the extent of how they abuse their power.

This has given me hope to say...in the coming week.."Good Riddance" to Gordi Browni and his little party.

I think old Gordon is a bit of a control freak. I thought it was hilarious. It was straight out of an episode of the Thick of It. If you don't know it, Youtube it. Perfect representation of how British Government MPs and PMs roll.

Well exactly mate... our system in this country is not only a joke but a disgrace.
How can it be that you can stay in power, even win elections without the majority of votes.

Your list shows that this is not a new problem and that something seriously needs to be done about it.

And I'm with you on the Tories too mate... So many people have been duped by Dave "The snake-oil salesman" Cameron... too many people who either don't remember, weren't around or just don't care, what the Tories did to us... and I'm worried It'll happen again.

Man.... I'm pretty stuck this time.

I remember a few days ago on a thread, I even said I'd consider voting Labour, just to stop the Tories getting in.... But I can't vote Labour either...

I've Flip-Flopped more than Jesus' sandals during this whole political year.

I dunno man.... I may just go into the polling booth blindfolded and blindly tick a box

I am going to bury myself in an ocean of ale tomorrow night when the 3rd debate is on and then watch it in all it's glory when well and truly cattle trucked so that I can appreciate the true comedy value of it all!

Maybe I shall even gain some gnostic and mystical insight into the true machinations of the 'contestants' in Britains Got Apathy or should that be Politicians On Mogadon or Xpenses Factor?

Sounds like a plan indeed... as you say, you may even have a political epiphany...

But you're right man, the fact that this has turned into some sort of X-factor type crap and all focus has been shifted from policy to presentation and from substance to style, is just pathetic.
It's such a shame that our election and ultimately this country's future, has come down to a 90 minute charade and a competition to see who can get the most digs and one-liners in.

If it wasn't so sad and worrying, It'd be funny.

I may well have a few tomorrow myself... On the plus side, Liverpoll are on Channel 5 at the same time

Watched this thread this afternoon with interest.

I haven't posted here for a while, and since it's late at night, I'm not going to look all the way through the rest now before I post.

I'm not a natural conservative or liberal, nor a natural socialist, but heres my twopenny anyway:

I ask myself, what have I gained under 'NEW' labour over the last 13 years?

I'm an English, 40yo man, who's worked since school, paid my taxes, kept (largely) out of trouble (1or2 tickets), was careful not to have kids, and run a business.

What have I gained?
Naff all! I'm just a cash cow to labour's 'social' programmes through my taxes and I see nothing back for me!
I'm all for the NHS, benefits system (as long as its for those in need, who've paid in), not layabouts who never work, and YES, I'm going to say it, immigrants. Why should you gain when you've never paid in? near 25 years I have. And you know what my biggest fear is right now? That after grafting all my working life, I'll be denied benefits if my company goes bust because of gordon effin brown
Just to survive I had to remortgage my business premises (I can only afford to pvt rent my home), and that took 6 months to achieve after the banking collapse. And don't tellme it wasn't browns fault, cos it was.

I've had enough for now. But if your a worker in the pvt sector, please please please don't consider labour or lib dems as a government. They've already killed this country, theres only one choice if you want to keep the £ you've earned yourself in your back pocket again, and be able to afford to give some to others when times are hard

A truly worthwhile distraction from the absurdity that this campaign has become.

I absolutely love his reaction to the radio commenter saying "we're going to play the clip." Pure gold.

This lady is the Joe the Plumber of the 2008 election in the United States. I so wish that this microphone problem had happened to Obama after walking away from Joe the Plumber.

I loved this lady. I am sure I would disagree with her 100% on her politics but it sounds as though from her Sky News interview she saw the PM walking up the street and she went over to ask him questions that she was concerned about.

I've seen a lot of people not understand what he was upset about because he supposedly did well in the interview. He did not do well. A little old lady tore him apart and there was clear tension. All of the staged meet and greets are to give the impression of smoothness and light hearted agreement not tension. Tension is death in politics. That is what he was upset about. He, the PM, was unable to convince one of his own supporters of how he was running the government.

The points to take away are that the 'spontaneous events' are highly staged. He was clearly upset at her selection by his handlers to meet and greet not understanding that she invited herself. In other words, she was unlike 99% of sheep that do what they are told. She took initiative and he was clearly surprised that it had not been bred out of her like everyone else.

I don't think he thought she was bigoted over the immigrant issue. I think he intended to mean her views were bigoted and stubborn. Again, an elitist view.

The last take away is despite how cordial he was with her and his attempt to save something from the meet and greet and return it to what he was accustomed to "How old are your grandchildren?" -- you know something completely meaningless to world affairs -- the second he was off camera his other personality lit up.

All politicians should be required to wear open mic's from 8am to 6pm everyday.
