Europe divorcing America

You do realize that France and a few other European nations saved our butts during the revolution right? Helping them out with Hitler was like a debt repaid.

I think it would be great if America divorced itself from America. Close down all the prisons and start caning the hell out of all criminals like Thailand does. I bet a good ol fashioned arse whoopin would be a better crime deterrent than 3 hots and a cot.

Actually Americans and the English are not different at all. I have been stationed in England for the last two years and it is just like being in America, just less crime. It is not that different

Actually, the world would probably be speaking Russian... The Russians were marching on Germany far quicker than the US and British forces were. Far, far quicker.

We didn't make it to Berlin in second place because we were "letting the Russians win"... They would have kicked arse, and then come after the rest of the world. We'd all be in a much darker world, that is for sure.

Besides, who cares which "side" won the war. It's over now, and it's only your insecure ego (amongst others) that requires to go over it again, and again. What is important is that we remember the reasons we all fought against tyrany, and apply those reasons to our daily lives.

Temperamental, born out of uncertainty maybe. From a Europe that has caused the death of millions of it's people. But we never consider that and it's much vaster scale than that of an alleged 6 million of another denomination, that is far more publicized.

Americans, French, Germans, Chinese... none of them are that different. They all speak, eat, breathe. They all have red blood, and like to socialise. They're all human beings, with the same wants, fears, hopes, dreams.

Who cares what part of the world you come from, or what imaginary line you live behind! Just get on with living a life that's fun, and filled with people.

I don't think Europe would like to kick America away to stay with many crazy @ss neighbors there!...here we have Venezuela or Bolivia...no big deal, but in the other side, there are Israel, Pakistan, India, Germany, N.Korea, Iran, Siria...some of them has invade Europe in the past like Germany, the Romans, Persians...they've been in religions invasions and battles like the crusades...so if you put it in a balance, the US represent a minor threat compared to other nations.

I think they need each to stay in control of some of their neighbors....and WWII is an example of that...I don't think America saved Europe...just that when they work together, Europe is much more balanced.

How about this for an off-the-cuff compromise theory?

Perhaps those who are more politically minded (and more prone to contribute to blogs?) are beginning to feel the kind of alienation which the OP has noticed, and others are expressing...

While those who are less poltically minded are continuing to absorb American words, entertainment, products, etc, which is the kind of thing I was first thinking about.

So which group are the real "Europeans"?

xenophobes tend to think its different...and they are on both sides of the pond.
They are the ones most often indoors all day...now that the internet is common, xenophobes (historically living in some isolated cave) spout out their xenophobic mindsets as if that was the norm.

These people are also more than likely, completely unaware of who their neighbor are, rarely even leave the house except to get the necessities, etc.

Its safe to ignore them, they add little to discussions or civilization as a whole.

And your right...besides the odd different pronounciation here and some mildly differences...the Brits and the Yanks are pretty much the same culture. This is more than likely due to the origins of the US (we are after all one of the brit's children), the close alliance and trade relations, etc.

I think personally that we need to create a free travel agreement between the two...I can go to either place without a issue (perm resident of the UK), but I think many others on both sides of the pond would welcome being able to travel and work whenever they want.

I always think when people talk of Europe they really really need to define WHO they are talking about, since it gets very confusing.

The UK is bang smack in the middle of these debates ALL the time *sigh*

Quick recap:

Germany did not have the power projection to set foot in Britain,
In the meanwhile Germany would have got da bomb,
Britian would have signed a PEACE treaty with Germany,
Germany would have gone after all the mineral rich states.. especially the US

The question is, would the US have been able to stand up to Germany with da domb? would Russia? my personal answer is NO.

So I come to the conclusion it was a GOOD thing we teamed up

i always thought it was us in the US rejecting your blueprint for life, you know colonialism, facism, communism, and neocommunism. americans have been divorcing europe for centuries now and europeans come here to escape the crap sandwhich that europe continually reproduces. hey life aint perfect here in america and it never was, but every 30 years or so life is horrid in europe and as studied before you guys like to push the self destruct button over and over again. im not talking a skrimish in the desert, i mean a real conflict like the one we only saw on our soil once. this article i feel is very Eurocentric and really all that is happening is we are rejecting over and over again your blueprint. I also find the fortress europe concept further proof of the racist thoughts that come from this contient, the US is the only "white" nation that will work with countries like china, korea, japan, india and mexico and view them, even only if at times, like equals and if you view someone as a rival that is viewing them as an equal as well. good luck europe, i just think its time the US goes isolationist and DOESNT bail you guys out next time, and there always is a next time, your contient goes under

Well the middle east nations are invading Europe as we speak...but in form of refugees, ad they are introducing a for us new religion (islam)...the crimerate have gone like a rocket since and many Europeans seems to blaim the US and the regime of Bush for this...

I was born and raised in the USA. And my American Dream is to get the hell out of America. Overall I don't have a problem with the hard working person who's just trying to get by, they are good people but I really can't stand anyone else. It is like I was born in the wrong country, just by visiting ATS everyday it just makes me more angry with Americans because they come on here spouting deny ignorance and many of them are purely ignorant. I like reading European blogs and European threads on ATS because they seem rather down to earth.

Oh and in ww2 America did not actually win other than pure luck! I have an older friend who fought in WW2 and said the the Nazi's were so intelligent there was almsot no way of winning. So America lucked out and sent balloons into the water and it fooled the Nazi's into thinking it was a ship coming so the Americans could sneak in at another location. It was pure luck! Oh and the British are the ones that cracked some secret Nazi code which the Americans could not do. We get lucky, we win with luck not brains. I do not doubt that the Nazi's could have taken Europe without America getting involved, the British were some bad asses that can fight a war I'll give you that. You guys held them off on your own for 2 years(?) But the Nazi's had far more forces and would have eventually drained the UK thin.

And as for the EU joining with Russia while I overall like the idea of a Pan-European unity I don't think the people in the small countries like Malta with 500,000 people would appreciate a country with 140,000,000 because obviously Russia would have far more power.

I wish abstract theorem would be correct , nothing I'd like more than sit at home and post on the internet all day and not know the neighbours. The thing is , since about a decade back or so, we have been inundated with crazed american ideas of terrorists and reasons to go to war on somebody . It is different for the American , unused to war in it's actual context , well versed in being lied to and swamped in propaganda . For those of us not subject to the same forces that perpetrate that same unreality , it is a leap. Either it encompasses you in the American vision, or you fall off the edge of the BS envelope , and you wonder how dumb people can really get and the extent they'll believe any lie.
