All of this just goes to show what a wonderfully inexact science the definition of the magnitude of an earthquake is. We have three different sets of people/programs using the same data and producing different results that they change frequently.

I think I will stick to the new scale!

Well it doesn't appear so, at least from this map:

vulcan.wr.usgs.gov...

In their phase data, USGS lists CI.GRA as the closest station, and it is available in GEE- so I've been watching it... I don't see anything close to a harmonic tremor of any kind... So I am gonna havta conclude that it is not volcanic for all of the above reasons....

Plus, this is the area where not too long ago we had a swarm of quakes...I think it is fault related.

Yeah your scale actually makes sense.

It would be easier if they used the MM scale for all quakes, but of course 90% of the quakes USGS, Geofon and EMSC report no one felt them.
I will always go with the locals reports, there is no way a 6 or a 7 would not be felt in New Zealand, the country is just too small.

I see the Aussies finally admitted there were 2 quakes yesterday

2010-09-29 17:10:51 6.9 4.89 S 133.83 E 10 M Irian Jaya Region, Indonesia

and usgs has downgraded the first one even further

In August of 1999 there was a 5.7 Mag. in this location. There were foreshock's that appear very similar to what we are seeing right now -

From 1999:

"According to the University of Nevada, Seismological Laboratory (UNRSL), in Reno, Nevada, the sequence began with a foreshock registering in the M3 range at 9:17 p.m. the night of July 31 which was followed by at least 12 foreshocks in the M2 range prior to the main M5.7 shock at 9:06 a.m., August 1. (See the UNRSL Press Release)"
Source

I wonder if all of these are foreshock's?

The depth are all over the place

I just saw a thread regarding the Scotty's Castle, Ca. quakes, thats a lot of action. Any additional comments on these quakes, seems to have some folks concerned. Many thanks for all the work done here - I visit daily.

I know what aftershocks are but seldom see the word foreshocks - I assume that means smaller quakes before a larger one? Would you think this possible because there are so many of them in this instance? I noted the last one was a bit bigger.

Foreshocks only come into existance after a big main event has happened, if that makes sense.
Until the big one they are just a "Swarm"
If a big doesn't come they remain a "Swarm"
There is no way to know they are foreshocks ............ until the big one comes .....or not
