Cheney asked CIA to hide plan from Congress

www.dawn.com

The existence of the programme, set up after 9/11, was hidden for eight years and even now its nature is not known. But some US media reports suggest that the programme may have involved torture and possibly assassinations.

Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, called the failure to inform Congress ‘illegal’.

‘We have a system of checks and balances. There is accountability in our Constitution. The executive branch cannot create these kinds of programmes ... and leave Congress in the dark. (It) is not only inappropriate, it is illegal.’

This story broke this weekend and unless I missed it...no one has posted it here...preferring to focus instead on supposed missing birth certificate non-issues and space aliens.

This is a real conspiracy. Even if the only thing Cheney ordered the CIA to hide was a secret bunker discount from Papa John's Pizza... it was still illegal and a direct violation of congressional oversight.

That and the revelation that the CIA has consistently lied to Congress and all of a sudden Ms. Pelosi's claim that she was lied to about torture gains serious credence...

...except for the loons on the hard right of course.

IF it turns out that the secret program was as Seymore Hersh reported earlier this year...a secret assissination ring...

then that would be in direct violation of the law and grounds for criminal charges...

And since Mr. Cheney doesn't have his secret bunker to hide in anymore then he'd better be careful because if the US Attn. General doesn't go after him, the Hague and others will.

Can you provide proof that any laws actually apply to Dick Cheney? I think that he has pretty firmly established that they do not.

Well if you shoot someone in the face and you get them to apologize to you...that's a lot of power...but the bugger (and that is not to say anything bad about actual buggerers) is out of power and sooner or later his sins will catch up to him.

If I were him I would only travel overseas to countries that would appericate him like North Korea and Burma.

This is serious news you know and more proof if any was needed of the criminal nature of the bush minor administration in general and Mr. Cheney's vice presidency specifically.

There is another related thread to this: www.abovetopsecret.com...

But you're right, people seem to be mostly ignoring this issue, neither topic has many replies, which I find baffling. I'm not even a US citizen and I consider this to be one of the most important recent stories.

I put it down to cynicism that Cheney is even going to suffer a headache over this attention. He is probably just going about his everyday business of skinning babies alive and not even worrying about it.

Heh. I read the information, could see the likelihood of Cheney's criminal behavior, figured anyone could, could not think of anything to add, and until I read your post, I wasn't going to write anything.

Cheney's criminal behavior is really not news, and it's nice to see evidence coming out. I'm all for locking him up in perpetuity. But I think most are.

Still, *I* can't lock him up, nor do I have a clue what can be done to affect that. So...

Should I have read the information and then posted that I think he should be locked up by "somebody?"

I mean, yes. Evidence of what a worm he is is good to have, but until he is locked up... What can ya do?

Do you blame him.
With all the holes in Congress, he did it to avoid the story from getting leaked out to the media.

Reminder: "to provide for the common defense"

Where's the person with the "Satan is in councilling because he keeps having dreams that Dick Cheney is under his bed" signature? That'd be a great time for that quote!

But yeah, if it was illegal, why is he not being prosecuted?

Nah...

they don't have to think about phony birth certificate issues or indigo children or hollow earth or aliens or secret societies running the planet...

...but stuff like this highlights the criminality of the bush minor administration and the vice president over the past 8 years and that is simply too much for their pointy little heads to process...

...its easier to spread rumors that Obama is a Manchurian candidate or an illegal alien or a socialist or any other such tripe.

God forbid that they should have to consider a real issue.

Yes. I DO blame him. It was his choice to make unethical and illegal moves in his behavior.

What, he's off the hook because it was easy? Give me a break.

BOOM!

You know have the Democrats scape goat.

Pelosi says CIA misinformed (lied) Congress. Realizing she put her foot in her mouth she gives a press conferance that goes horribly wrong. She dissappears for a while, but the Republicans isn't letting her get away with her accusastions.

Democrats finally get their crap together and stand behind Pelosi backing her claims. A week later this story breaks.

I find it convienant.

Cheney the dick and the bush minor administration has a long history of running fast and furious with the law and if and it is an IF this is the secret assassination program that Seymore Hersh discussed, it predates Pelosi's comments...

...but all that is moot since it has already been revealed surprise surprise... that the CIA misled and lied to congress...

Besides all of that with the exception of the GOP and the talking heads on MSM...Pelosi's claims was/is not a scandal...

It was like...OH the CIA lied, so what else is new?

That is why he is a great scapegoat.

1. He is very disliked

2. Known to bend the law almost to the breaking point.

3. Talks about how torture is necsassary.

If I said Cheney killed my kittens and ate them with no proof (like these dems are doing) people would be inclined to believe me.

Whether this predates what Pelosi was talking about or not doesn't matter. They have their boogyman and will use him as their patsy.

edit to add-

Pelosi accsusing the CIA of lying to Congress during a briefing is a big thing. Its even bigger when she doesn't provide proof of her claims.

Perhaps, but we must get away from the idea that it's Dem vs. Repub. These are the two "gatekeeper" parties. They are kept in place so that those who identify with one can point fingers at the other. All the while, those that are REALLY doing things and moving against us can creep around in the background doing what they want while we are distracted.

Seriously, Cheney made evil moves, regardless of his party, and on behalf of the REAL masters on this planet.

Did you even read any articles/do any research on this subject??? The Director of the CIA is the one who brought this info to light, not Dems looking for a scapegoat! Why does everything have to be D vs R??? This is about the VP breaking the law.

CBC News-Secret CIA plan.......

from source:
On Saturday, the New York Times, citing "two people with direct knowledge of the matter" reported that Panetta(current CIA director) told the Senate and House intelligence committees that the CIA withheld information about the secret plan from Congress on orders from the former vice-president.

Feinstein said Panetta told Congress late last month that "he had just learned about the program, described it to us, indicated that he had cancelled it and ... did tell us that he was told that the vice-president had ordered that the program not be briefed to the Congress."

If true...Cheney didn't bend the rules to almost breaking.....he BROKE them.

Can you imagine the outrage from the Right Wing if the Obama administration hid any information from congress or the House and tried to sidestep the rule of law?

Read about this in the Wall Street Journal, it's very serious stuff and should not be swept under the rug. The CIA became a political tool for Cheney. If you think the CIA or Cheney were reporting everything they were doing, illegal or not, to Congress especially their "enemies" in Congress (certain Democrats) then your too naive.
