NDTV (Indian TV) believe the death toll is well over a 100.

This attack has reminded me of something the British government said, regarding US insurrection against Pakistan. Gordon Brown protested because there was no present pretext to justify action. He concluded by suggesting action would be necessary if Pakistan became "apathetic" to terrorism in India and Afghanistan.

CNN is saying the FBI is not really commenting on that but it seems to me you might suggest your son stay put.

CNN just showed (and pointed out) that a Police Van did a drive-by and shot up civilians, on video. Now they are saying the 'terrorists' stole police uniforms and equipment to pull this off - At least 7 targets hit simultaneously, including 3 hotels, central rail station, and police HQ.

Interestingly, Indian Counterterrorism is called ATS. When they said the ATS Chief was dead, i thought of the website first.. heh

MUMBAI: ATS chief Hemant Karkare, two senior police officers and 78 others were killed when terrorists struck with impunity in Mumbai on Wednesday night in coordinated multiple blasts and gunfire in a dozen areas including at iconic landmarks CST railway station and two five star hotels--Oberoi and Taj.

Karkare(54), who is probing the Malegaon blasts case, was gunned down when he was leading an operation at Hotel Taj against terrorists who had taken 15 people, including seven foreigners, as hostages. He was hit by three bullets in his chest. One MP Krishan Das and 200 people were stranded in Taj hotel.

Another IPS officer Ashok Marutirao Kamte, a 1989 batch IPS officer, was killed while fighting terrorists at Metro Cinema in the city along with encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar who also gunned down as one of the worst terror strikes brought Mumbai to the knees.

Army moved in to assist local police in flushing out terrorists holed up in Taj and Oberoi hotels. 200 NSG commandoes were also rushed to Mumbai.

As indiscriminate firing and explosions at iconic landmarks showed no signs of easing since the first attack at Leopold restaurant in Colaba area at about 9.30 PM, hospitals like GT and Cama where gunfire was reported were also targeted. Police and eyewitnesses said AK-47s, rifles and hand grenades were used at will by an unspecified number of terrorists.

Sixty bodies and over 200 persons injured were brought at St George's Hospital, hospital sources said. Seven bodies were brought to GT hospital while two bodies were brought to Cooper hospital. Four bodies were brought to Mumbai hospital.

They stormed a cinema, hotels, hospital, railways station, the streets and apparantly from the roof tops too.

MUMBAI: About 200 people were on Wednesday night holed up inside a hall in the Taj Hotel here as they were advised by the hotel staff not to go out because of the attack by terrorists.

They are holed up in the hall in the old wing of the hotel since 9.30 PM, when terrorists struck.

It means that the British government is sending in troops to help squash the situation...

This is very, very bad news. Buckle your safetybelts folks.

Very good point.. The ATS chief was deeply involved in a case known as the 'Malegaon Blasts' which apparently were carried out by hindu terrorists in a muslim majority area..

This investigation has come under immense political pressure by right wing hindu groups as being unjust.

FYI, one of the first news reports out of Mumbai (1-2 hours before MSM began covering) reported that the attacks were being carried out by "Nigerian terrorist". Looking for a copy of it now since it seems to have been pulled...

I really cannot see British troops being sent, special forces is a different matter all together though (and possible). Scotland Yard will probably provide assistance and materials to deal with the increase terrorism in India.

The statement from the British government is interesting (not just because the significant numbers of Indians in the United Kingdom);

"These outrageous attacks in Mumbai will be met with a vigorous response. I have sent a message to Prime Minister (Manmohan) Singh that the UK stands solidly with his government as they respond, and to offer all necessary help. Urgent action is under way to offer every possible protection to British citizens in the region."

What does Gordon mean?

I'm sure it depends on who they have nearby. I'm also sure they have SAS nearby. This is, as they said, an "urgent" situation. If they are sending people in it is going to come quickly. I would also not be surprised to find out they had people "in the batter's box", so to speak.

Possibly simply reassurance that Indian forces are responding thoroughly to the attacks to ensure the safety of all involved.

.....or that the SAS is coming

Nonsense!

No religion whether it be Islam, Hinduism, Christianity calls for such behaviour.

They are ALL religions of peace.

Those that did this do not have region or where brainwashed crazy.

Smells like an inside job. Police vans with terrorists dressed as police men!? What's the point? Obviously inside job.
