A Doctor, a Mutation and a Potential Cure for AIDS

online.wsj.com

The breakthrough appears to be that Dr. Hütter, a soft-spoken hematologist who isn't an AIDS specialist, deliberately replaced the patient's bone marrow cells with those from a donor who has a naturally occurring genetic mutation that renders his cells immune to almost all strains of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

...The mutation prevents a molecule called CCR5 from appearing on the surface of cells. CCR5 acts as a kind of door for the virus...

Hope this is true!

And if it is, I hope the procedure will be available to everyone and not just the super rich. Could there be any other applications of this procedure for other virus'/diseases? Could we take the marrow of people with natural immunity to other diseases and create a type of cure?

Hopefully this will pan out and we can effectively begin to stamp out this plague.

Wow i was just on a site called Digg, and along with this story, there was another one where scientists genetically enhanced immune cells to be able to detect the HIV virus.

Belive me, i have since 2001 seen so many cures, and new treatments being developed that we should all be aids and cancer free. This is good news, but believe me, 2 weeks from now there will be no word of it, and you will never hear of it again.

I will put this under HIV cure #275

ATS- curing aids and cancer since 2002

I honestly wish that something like this would come out into the public and actually have good funding to be used on people. But sadly it wont happen...

I'm afraid you might be right. Every year there are about a half-dozen claims that a cure has been found and none of them seem to pan out. Some believe that there is already a cure and is being withheld for a variety of reasons.

I just hope that if there is a cure out there, that we find it, fund it, and give it out freely....or at least find it and fund it, letting it be known.

Profit rules...people die, and where's the profit in a cure(?)...nowhere.

You're right...won't happen.

Population control AND profit for prolonging agony...this is the golden goose that constantly and perpetually lays golden eggs. Can you imagine the losses the pharmaceutical companies would reap? This is not even the tip of the iceberg.

The only thing that concerns me about this is that it suggests there are strains which do not make use of this "doorway" to infect cells. If so, it suggests the same capacity for mutation and adaptation we have seen so many times in the past with respect to HIV treatments. It could drastically reduce the spread of the majority of strains if widely deployed, but what of those to which the patient from whom the bone marrow was excised is not immune?

Starred!

No we will not see this put to use. We will never cure AIDS or Cancer. There is no money in the cure, the money is in the medicine. The Pharmaceutical industry is nothing more than centralized dug dealing. When you sell drugs, the money is not in the first time high, it's on the come back. Keep them coming back and you will make money. That is why street deals "cut" their supply. You make more, you have ore to sell, and you keep them coming back.

AIDS and Cancer meds are worth billions per year. There is no interest in curing it, but there is an interest and a profit in making sure you can live with it!

This is truly important and at the same time sad.

IF they can cultivate that mutation in the lab they could very well have one cure for AIDS... that is the important thing.

The sad thing is if it is a cure there is the all too real danger research will stop there condemning millions to death simply because they cannot afford the cure... since bone marrow transplants are expensive and cultivating the mutation will be also I am sure. That is also cruel. We need to find a cure everyone can afford.

This is an important step but there is still work to be done.

I give this another day before the story is completely squashed. This reminds me of a cancer story a couple years. There was a study out North Carolina(?) where it was discovered that certain people held a genetic immunity to cancer. People in the study were literally injected with cancer cells and their immune system destroyed them. This was huge news - the study was made public (I was actually fortunate enough to scan it)....then it completely disappeared. The story was removed from the internet, no more mention of it on tv, nothing left but a few people like me with vague memories of the story.

Short answer - Yep, this could be it. Will it ever amount to anything? Not as long as the drug companies are around. Anything that destroys an industry like the pharmaceutical one will never be allowed to exist.
