“Americans are among the most generous people on the planet and excel at serving one another,” says Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party presidential candidate. “Unfortunately, Sen. Barack Obama wants to turn service into a government requirement” by forcing middle, high school, and college students to work in federally approved jobs. “But service must be an outgrowth of the heart to be life-changing for both parties. It isn’t possible to mandate generosity or coerce compassion,” Barr explains.
Moreover, “it certainly isn’t Washington’s responsibility to dictate to every middle school, high school, and college across America the sort of activities they should require of their students,” notes Barr. “If local school boards and college presidents believe mandatory service to be a good idea, they can—as many have done—make it a graduation requirement. There’s no justification for the federal government to set a national standard.”
It's only the illusion of a choice. Your reciept of any benefits will be contingent upon your participation in the program. That's not a choice in my opinion.

How is it forced servitude if it is your choice to serve or not? What makes you think you will somehow be forced to do something you don't want to do?
I help people because I choose to do so, not because I'm forced to. I don't discourage anyone from helping a friend or neighbor who's in need, but it should once again be their choice, not some state dictated requirement.
People do things to help each other because they want to. Maybe you already have, and if so, why discourage others from doing the same? People that do decide to serve will have a choice. They can choose to serve or not, as well as what type of service they can do.
I have no agenda, and I'm not a political person by nature. "Yes", helping others is a wonderful value to teach one's children, but I don't need the state to do it for me or mandate that I do so.
I just think that using this issue for your own personal political agenda is questionable to say the least. It is a good idea and a good value to teach our children.
Mandating that people perform community service is not a good idea. I can no more keep Barack out of office than I can John McCain. I have no such powers.
Is it worth it to demonize a benefitial issue to keep someone you don't like out of office?
you all are still demonstrating massively poor reading aptitude.
all of this marxist crap is complete paranoid thinking and really poorly thought out.
You have no integrity at all do you
In fact, i would expect you neo-cons
neocons suffer from selective reading
I'd file a complaint and ask that a mod change the title to something less "trollish"
goes against the T&C a little bit where:
This thread is trollish in creation.
The myth has been debunked. Once again.
HOW MANY "anti-obama" threads does it take to get to the center of neo-facism fundamental ideals and beliefs?
Just one. Because they're all the same.
Lies, deceit, omittance of facts in order to further the Agenda.
I am in favor of some form of mandatory public service between the ages of 18 and 21 and have been so for years. Look at it this way:

Not until it was brought up by a candidate that you are opposed to. You do know that Bush and McCain brought up the same thing after 9/11, don't you?
Typical mindless liberal babbling in an effort to deflect the spotlight from Obama. This isn't about Bush or McCain. This thread is about Obama.
So you are saying that Obama is now a DICTATOR? Great, I guess I missed the entire vote, as well as the celebration.
Damn, I bet it was a good party too.
Another typical mindless liberal diversion. Take what somebody says, and then say they said something different.
There's no need to tell me what I said in your words when my own words are right in front of you. I did not say DICTATOR.
I will gladly clarify though.
It is incredible that Obama even thinks along the lines of evaluating and judging individual choices like whether I eat too much, drive and SUV, set my thermostat too high or too low, or speak enough languages to keep him from being embarrassed.
* reduce size of quote *
This is exactly the type of mentality that makes you think of the word "Marxist" when you think of Obama.

I believe it may be a very subtle attempt at reinstituting slavery in this country.

Would there be any black kids/adults in these various programs?
I believe it would include everyone. Like Bush his only interest is power. If you read a bit about his childhood, he even had aspiration then of being the President one day. Couple that with his elitist attitude and his self-loving arrogance, and no one will be safe from his tyranny.

Hey, it's a conspiracy site, and we're all entitle to our own personal theories regardless of how fantastic or incorrect they may be.

I believe it's an attempt to "de-slack" the slackers, learn the value of the working world and the dollar.
Jumping to the thought of it being an attempt for slavery is a large leap of thought.
