I found this opinion piece by Bob Barr, and it sums up my position perfectly on the issue of Mandatory Service..

“Americans are among the most generous people on the planet and excel at serving one another,” says Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party presidential candidate. “Unfortunately, Sen. Barack Obama wants to turn service into a government requirement” by forcing middle, high school, and college students to work in federally approved jobs. “But service must be an outgrowth of the heart to be life-changing for both parties. It isn’t possible to mandate generosity or coerce compassion,” Barr explains.

Moreover, “it certainly isn’t Washington’s responsibility to dictate to every middle school, high school, and college across America the sort of activities they should require of their students,” notes Barr. “If local school boards and college presidents believe mandatory service to be a good idea, they can—as many have done—make it a graduation requirement. There’s no justification for the federal government to set a national standard.”

I sort of like the idea. We need a focus on generosity and compassion, it can be instilled into people just as greed and fear has been instilled into people by our current system. If you make doing good things for the community as beneficial for yourself as doing selfish things then you will naturally create a more friendly and selfless community.

How is it forced servitude if it is your choice to serve or not? What makes you think you will somehow be forced to do something you don't want to do?
It's only the illusion of a choice. Your reciept of any benefits will be contingent upon your participation in the program. That's not a choice in my opinion.

People do things to help each other because they want to. Maybe you already have, and if so, why discourage others from doing the same? People that do decide to serve will have a choice. They can choose to serve or not, as well as what type of service they can do.
I help people because I choose to do so, not because I'm forced to. I don't discourage anyone from helping a friend or neighbor who's in need, but it should once again be their choice, not some state dictated requirement.

I just think that using this issue for your own personal political agenda is questionable to say the least. It is a good idea and a good value to teach our children.
I have no agenda, and I'm not a political person by nature. "Yes", helping others is a wonderful value to teach one's children, but I don't need the state to do it for me or mandate that I do so.

Is it worth it to demonize a benefitial issue to keep someone you don't like out of office?
Mandating that people perform community service is not a good idea. I can no more keep Barack out of office than I can John McCain. I have no such powers.

Remember everyone that like Cockroaches, evil intentions hate the light of day.

As you read all of the posts here, you see defenders of Obama calling this thread "Trollish" and questioning our right to form an opinion on the subject...

Doubt me? Read back...

you all are still demonstrating massively poor reading aptitude.

all of this marxist crap is complete paranoid thinking and really poorly thought out.

You have no integrity at all do you

In fact, i would expect you neo-cons
neocons suffer from selective reading
I'd file a complaint and ask that a mod change the title to something less "trollish"
goes against the T&C a little bit where:

This thread is trollish in creation.

The myth has been debunked. Once again.

HOW MANY "anti-obama" threads does it take to get to the center of neo-facism fundamental ideals and beliefs?

Just one. Because they're all the same.

Lies, deceit, omittance of facts in order to further the Agenda.

And of course the icing on the cake

I am in favor of some form of mandatory public service between the ages of 18 and 21 and have been so for years. Look at it this way:

Obama Supporters don't want you looking at it objectively; that means you may shed some light on the Marxist/Socialist intentions of the Leftist.

It still amazes me that on a site dedicated to "ALL things Conspiratorial" some are so very blind to an obvious conspiracy sitting right in the political mix of the day.

On a site designed to question everything, we have members popping up that want us to question nothing.

On a site where reptilian takeover is common, the fact that their candidate has Socialist/Marxist intentions has escaped them.

Amazing

you guys are sure putting words into his mouth and are misreading and misinterpreting everything he says.

First - it is NOT his job to mold the public into his image (Obamesiah)
Next - Imagine if GWB was saying this or any republican - "you guys" would be the first ones saying he was trying to be a facist dictator.

I will have to start threads or at least do this for yourselves - replace the word Obama with Bush and see just how that sounds to you before you post in defense of your candidate. Is it really a good idea, or are you just going along with the party line ?

Typical mindless liberal babbling in an effort to deflect the spotlight from Obama. This isn't about Bush or McCain. This thread is about Obama.

I brought it up because this is not a new idea that Obama cooked up. I was showing that only a few years ago republicans were saying the same thing. How is that diversionary?

So you are saying that Obama is now a DICTATOR? Great, I guess I missed the entire vote, as well as the celebration.

Damn, I bet it was a good party too.

Another typical mindless liberal diversion. Take what somebody says, and then say they said something different.

There's no need to tell me what I said in your words when my own words are right in front of you. I did not say DICTATOR.

I know you didn't. I'm just having a little fun with you. You make it sound like if Obama is elected, we will instantly fall into communism. That is laughable and ridiculous, so I thought it would be fun to point that out.
See I even used a smiley to show my good intentions.

I will gladly clarify though.

It is incredible that Obama even thinks along the lines of evaluating and judging individual choices like whether I eat too much, drive and SUV, set my thermostat too high or too low, or speak enough languages to keep him from being embarrassed.

* reduce size of quote *

This is exactly the type of mentality that makes you think of the word "Marxist" when you think of Obama.

You really are assuming too much, but you do have the right to your opinion. You could also say this about any other candidate running for office, but the only one you complain about is Obama. I think your intentions are also clear.

Please answer the following questions.

Is it true that if you do not want to serve, you don't have to?

If this is true, then how can you say it is mandatory?

It is your choice to serve, and they offer an incentive for you if you do. They do not punish you if you don't. That means it is not mandatory. It is that simple.

I think you all are taking this to far... Obama knows damn well America is not keen on forced servitude. This is not forced servitude first off,,, there are no penalties - there are rewards which is the motivating factor... Second I think our country's young need
to experience some responsibility and giving. Have you hung out with our youth???
Entitlement - everyone is a star...

I am not pro Obama but as long as this is penalty free I am all for it! We have forgotten about community... It would have helped me as a youth - I wasted my energy doing no good - would you rather have kids getting their attention from helping a geezer or selling rocks and shooting at the kids on the next block??? Do you really know what our kids are doing??? I still do - trust me this is fine in comparison to housing a 19 year old for life at the tune of 1.5 million dollars!

I'm entitled to my opinion so if you need to flame go cook a burger on your grill, its nice out!

Obamma will lose. He only had a chance to begin with because most people are fed up with sacrificing over and over again so that a few well connected people of doubtful character can benefit financially. He has pulled off his mask and revealed that he wants more of the same. McCain is in ill health and will be working against a democratic congress and senate. These two factors may prevent McCain from doing much of anything. Since those running are not able to do good, it is better that they do nothing at all.

Maybe somebody will enlarge the space between Obamas ears and that way we do not have to listen to him repeating the word Change anymore. That would be a blessing.

The current state of the US is similar to the state that Rome was in before it's collapse, greed, money and glut any. One man tries to throw ideas on how people should help one another by helping there communities and country, yet the people of the US (well the posts I've read here) find his idea terribly wrong...like I said earlier, glut any and now laziness.

God Bless America? I don't think so. God help America.

You know Hal, I've been doing a little thinking on this so-called mandatory service, and I believe it may be a very subtle attempt at reinstituting slavery in this country. It's the proverbial wolf in sheep's clothing. It seems benign on the surface, but in truth it's like a malignant cancer that will continue to grow.

Barack Obama calls it public service; but it's really indentured servitude. If we permit such a program as this to ever be implemented, the requirements will steadily go up until you find yourself completely at the mercy of your new master, good ole Uncle Obama.

Unfortunately Uncle Sam got tired of our constant bleating a long time ago, and left us to shift for ourselves.

Would there be any black kids/adults in these various programs?

I believe it's an attempt to "de-slack" the slackers, learn the value of the working world and the dollar.

Jumping to the thought of it being an attempt for slavery is a large leap of thought.

Now that's the white man thinking. My opinion, that's a very stupid question.

I believe it would include everyone. Like Bush his only interest is power. If you read a bit about his childhood, he even had aspiration then of being the President one day. Couple that with his elitist attitude and his self-loving arrogance, and no one will be safe from his tyranny.

I can't believe how one persons thought of it being an attempt to slavery has started to spawn the thread. This is typical white fearing another colour, and the white people seemed to have conjured the belief Obama wants slavery from who? They made it up in there heads themselves, wow....and it's spawning...just wow.

Hey, it's a conspiracy site, and we're all entitle to our own personal theories regardless of how fantastic or incorrect they may be.
