Female Survivalists.

I'm a 27 year old female from Oxford, UK.

I thought I'd start a thread for females whom are interested in survivalism.

I'd really like to go on a camping trip or something to learn/try out/test myself on whether i'd actually be able to survive. I've noticed a lot of males organising such things, and that's excellent, however, I'm a little hesitant about meeting a bunch of strange men from the internet and going somewhere isolated with them (no offence guys). So I thought starting a thread for females would be a good idea.

Are you female? Are you interested in survivalism? Post!

I dont think I would want to meet up with a bunch of rough, tough, strange men all with guns and maybe knives in the middle of the woods some place either that I didnt know. I dont think they could pay me enough money to meet with all of them. That would be any womans worst night mare.

But yeah I am a survivalist but I live in North Carolina so its not like I can help you out over there. Not sure what it will be like though when situation X happens, my back is going bad real fast since my last accident so they are telling me to be real careful.

Ah, i just had an operation on my back.

But y'know, I'm sure there are many things you could still do, regardless of your physical health. Some skills that would come in handy are things like sewing, and cooking, and making bowls and weaving, even fishing. It's not all about making shelter and hard physical work. There are lots of things you could do that would be very valuable to a group.

Sorry ladies Ime not a girl but I wanted to interject a dose of reality. You two make it sound like all male survivalist are rambos.

Its just not true. Most of us are family guys who hold down a real job. were just every day folks. The stereo type of the lone survivalist with knifes and guns just isn't reality in most cases. Were not criminals intent on pillaging villages and doing bad things to the lady's.

Just wanted to clear that up please continue with your conversation.

No no no, I certainly don't think that. I just thought it would be a good idea to start a thread for women, as I don't think it's a very good idea for a lone woman to meet up with a bunch of male strangers from the internet, for whatever reason. I don't know if you have a daughter, but would you feel comfortable letting her do such things?

I didn't mean to offend, but to me it's sensible.

I know not all men are that way but I still cant imagine being the only woman in the woods with maybe 40 men that I didnt know. Knowing my luck they would make me do all the cooking for them and the laundry.

I figure if situation x happens my family will find me useful, I still know alot of wild plants that we can eat and use for medicines if needed. And I have made lots of baskets in my day so I can teach the kids how to make them and many other things.

Yes mam I do have a daughter. She was raised as a Survivalist. As for feeling comfortable Honestly I don't have to worry about her. She is very tuff, and can take care of herself.

Don't get me wrong I see you point and applaud you for starting this thread. I also know that the post so far were done in levity. I still felt I needed to say something because non survivalist or new survivalist may read such post and strengthen the stereo type that we as survivalist have to deal with almost daily. Ill give you an example.

So I take no offense and honestly encourage threads like this, but I take every opportunity to fight the stereo type of the modern survivalist.

I even started my own web site about survival that's how serious My family and I take it.

Please keep up the good work. When My wife gets home from work I will have her check out your thread. and Ime sure when my daughter gets home from her camping trip she will add to it as well.

Being a survivalist means you have a track record of being given limited options and producing ***TANGIBLE*** results.

There are exceptions, but in general, women have a very different idea of what work and accomplishment are compared to men.

Most but not all women believe work is pushing buttons on a computer, answering phones, telling other MEN what to do, and house chores and child care.

Being a survivalist is completely different work involving crisis management and creative problem solving. I'm sorry but a LOT of men are great at this and women would rather just talk about what they might do but nothing ever gets done. The only time anything tangable gets done is when a man steps in and does it.

For example, last weekend, I was designing a portable propane shower I could fold into a suitcase. The hoses I needed to join were of the wrong size, and I needed some way to join them together. My solution - Acetone and Styrofoam formed a malleable plastic I used for a connector, and I used a butane lighter to soften the plastic hoses to fit on the connector and cooled to form a permanent seal. I now have a portable propane shower made from copper tubing, a propane lantern, paint cans, an adapted foot bycycle pump, and detachable PVC tubing with a shower curtain and plastic storage container. Total cost of materials $80.

This is exactly the kind of work that survivalists must perform to "survive".
Survivalists fix their own cars, and anything else for that matter. They utilize their skills as generalists (not specialists) to take a creative and interdisciplinary approach to arriving at a workable solution.

But most important thing that (Male) survivalists do is they DO and not just talk. Not all, but most women fall short in this area.

Don't get me wrong women, I am very grateful for all of you being exactly who you are and we need both types on this planet, but I am pointing out that we are different. And most importantly, differences are not bad, they are complimentary. Women and socializing are what keep the villages together, and the housework done, and the hearth warm, and the children fed.

Men are built to defend in times of crisis, build the infrastucture of civilization, and invent new technology which create all the "push button" comforts of home and efficiency of industry.

I guess the most important thing I have observed is that the trend in the last 50 years is to treat women better, and I am completely for that, but look around women.... everything you have is built by men. Think about that and give it the consideration it is truly worthy of. Men handle change and adaptation well, and women handle stability and preservation of all that is good. Thank goodness for our differences.

To the OP I sorry for even posting in your thread. it seems I as a male opened a door for other males to come in and spread BS. I am sorry.

If you are planning to get a meeting of all-female survivalists together, I would actually use more caution. How do you know the people you are talking to are actually females until you get out there? You could be in a lot more danger if some whacko out there knows that there's an all-female camping group out isolated in the woods on a certain day... just my thoughts. Then again if you are a true survivalist you can handle anything, male or female.

Now where I grew up in Maine a survivalist weekend meant you went up in the mountains, with guns, knives, and basicly lived off the land for the weekend. That is why I said that about the guns and Knives not like it was something bad but if you guys just fix cars and stuff for survival instead of go hunting and living off the land for the week or weekend then that just isnt survival.

I would like to see you live in the state of Maine with 3 kids in Diapers, no running water, No electric, no phone, and its 3 miles to the closest stream and you have to walk it to carry the water for baths for 5 each day for the family. You also have to cook outside over an open fire all summer. And cook on a wood stove all winter long. for 2 years. Believe me I did it and I am a woman. Women can live that way. And I also Built that house so dont say women cant build or do anything.

That's a very good point.

It was my idea to really just encourage females. I didn't have an all-female group in mind, just a place for females to talk, and go on mixed survival outings, with the knowledge that you wouldn't be the only female going along.

It wasn't my intention to debate the differences between males and females, it was merely out of concern that women may feel intimidated going out into the wilderness with a bunch of males they met on the internet.

It's not a case of males and females are different, it's a case of every induvidual is different, and can bring different things to a group, regardless of gender.

I don't want this thread to turn into a Males vs Female debate.

Well I would much rather meet up with men if guns WERE permitted, especially my own. They don't call them the great equalizer for nothing.

Fact is if one wants to learn how to survive the best teachers are usually going to be men. Now I would not feel all that comfortable being the only female in a huge group of males, just because of the weirdness factor, but as a female it would be easier to chat up specific guys online and get invited to smaller gatherings. Find someone in your area that really knows what they are doing and work on them. Many are married, maybe you can start up a mixed gender outing.

I want to get to the heart of the issue of survivalism which is an attitude of "Just DO IT" and make it fast!

I acknowledge your point that this is more about individuals. I completely agree, but we all have been programmed by our genetic predispositions and our environment. It is this very sticky point of which politically correct individuals grapple with, but if you see your current way of thinking as a limitation, one that you must overcome to find the solution to the problem at hand, and successfully think outside the box, then you are well on your way to being a master at change and adaptation which is the key ingredient of survivalism.

Men have common traits, Women have common traits, but we are a species which on an individual level demonstrates more diversity than any other species on earth. We can thank our larger magnificent brains for that.

I have a message for all politically correct, and all feminists and all patriarchs, and everybody else.

We are not all equal!
We are all different!
And that is precisely why humanity is still alive today.

I'm available for teaching any all-female survival groups.

If Gender is a concern I'm quite happy to wear a pair of camo-hotpants and a bikini top.

Seriously though..History has noted some of the finest warrior/hunters were women.

It's just not a necessity if you're not intending to 'Rambo' it up.

Hilda, not only are you a survivalist, but you are an exceptional woman of which I have tremendous respect. Anyone who endures and survives tremendous hardship always commands my deepest admiration and respect.

But really, there is some girls out there that are just as bad as guys.

And don't waste your time trying to learn now. Its like an exam, you don't really study or learn untill you have to. Enjoy your life .
