THE PROBOSCIS MONKEY
The greatest concentration of wildlife in Borneo, is found near Sandakan, along the lower regions of Sabah's biggest and longest river, the Kinabatangan. Orangutans, macaques, red and silver leaf monkeys, elephants, birds, eight species of hornbills, crocodiles, civet cats and otters are found in this region, but the most famous and most bizarre animal is the Proboscis monkey (a primate found only in Borneo). With its huge pendulous nose, a characteristic pot belly and strange honking sounds, it is one of the most peculiar and ugliest (or beautiful???) animals in the world. There is only one species of the proboscis monkey, Nasalis larvatus. The distinctive physical feature from which this monkey takes its name is the long pendulous nose of mature males. The Proboscis Monkey is found only in the coastal areas of Borneo and the Mentawai islands west of Sumatra living in coastal mangrove swamps and riverine forests on the lower reaches of major rivers coastal and mangrove forests.

if i was the first person to see this.... i would think it was somekind of beast wouldnt you!!! look at it!

Well im very very partial to monkeys for lots of reasons....

however it is a little odd looking to be sure, but then you should have seen this guy in the pub on saturday night

strange...id say, unique and differant but not ugly....try something like a sloath or certain rodents for that IMHO..

I love monkeys. These aren't the cutest but they ain't ugly either. They remind me of something you would see in a Starwars Cantina scene.

That monkeys nose reminds me of something, but i won't say what, LOL! 8=D

Actually it died age 14 one year ago yesterday.
I,m suprised it lived so long too. It had to have had a genetic fault.. inbred maybe?

Hands-down the worlds ugliest homo-sapien on the planet is that midget child molester. I cant remember his name right now I'll go do a search.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww those poor poor ugly critters. Wonder if animals have 'beauty awareness'. If so, then we need to love the ugly ones even more, to help make up for their being ugly and make them feel better about themselves.

Sam was crowned the ugliest dog on earth and he was a chinese crested. Chinese cresteds tend to lose their teeth very early due to the hairless factor(somehow related genetically) They are very sweet dogs, but, not so pleasant to pet. They get uglier as they age.

The one in my avatar is about 9 months old and this one was about 10 weeks old

Here is a powder puff version(has a full, non shedding coat) it is a littermate to the one with the punk rock mane in the first photo

i dont understand how something so fat and large as the proboscis monkey can climb a tree. that would be interesting to watch someday.
