Alaska is rumbling!

50 quakes and still counting in just over 10 hours have happened in Alaska. The smallest being a 2.6 and the strongest being a 6.3. They seem to be coming ever 10-30 minutes and have been coming steady for the past 10 hours. (I've been updating this post for nearly 9 hours and I'm now a zombie, I must sleep so I'll leave it at 50 and update it when I wake up again

That's 2 over 6.0, 15 that are 4.0-5.9, 33 that are 2.5-3.9 all in the past 10 HOURS! Keep in mind they do not list anything under 2.5 so this could very well be literally non stop shaking. This is big.

earthquake.usgs.gov...

What the heck is going on? Is this normal?

There are supposed "clusters" of quakes that happen in hot zones like this around the ring of fire but 50 quakes in 10 hours is a bit much, I think something big might be happening.

There's another. We are now at 10. Is anyone online that knows a lot about quakes? I have never heard of so many quakes happening at the same time like this. Is this something very serious happening?

Make that 11 now.

[edit on 14-6-2006 by d1k]

This is getting crazy, they added 3 more. We are at 14 now.

I seriously hope this is not leading up to something insanely big.

Wow, for once, one of these posts actually has me a little bit freaked out. The cynic in me wants to say that this is just some type of natural event that is harmless and won't create anything bad. Let's hope he's right.

I was thinking, and maybe this has something to do with all of the recent volcanic/tectonic activity. Is this area near the Ring of Fire?

I believe this is right on the ring of fire but the question is is this many so close together in the same area normal?

We're now at 17.

Thats 7 quakes in less then an hour, 14 quakes in less then 2 hours and all 17 in just over 5 hours.

Clusters are fairly common - though usually below 5.0 in my time watching.

Alaska is a very active zone, this many quakes is definitely not unprecedented in the region - though I have not a clue about frequency averages (quakes/hour, avg. magntiude/hour, whatever measurement you want to apply to quantify the severity of the sequence). In other words, I know that clusters are common, but I don't know what would qualify a particular cluster as uncommon...

Also, I tend to think of quakes as a release of pressure, a forestalling of a big one, rather than an ominous harbinger of doom.

The more small quakes a region experiences, the less the chance of a catastrophic 8 or 9, that could really do some damage - usually.

Then again, there is precedent for a lead-up series of smaller shocks, signalling serious instability, as we saw in Sumatra not too long ago (twice). But generally I look on quiet periods in active regions as more ominous, because it seems to signal that the plates are locked and building up tension.

I'm no seismologist, but this is what I've managed to pick up along the way - hope this helps.
